Mashable - The Social Media Guide: Posterous vs. Tumblr: A Head to Head

  • Sachin · 5 months ago
It's hard to believe that yesterday was just the ONE YEAR anniversary of our launch. We have come so far since then, and we thank your users for all the love and support.

We're moving fast over here in Posterous land and we have A TON of new stuff coming out soon. Our goal is to be *the way* you post rich media online. And no matter where your communities are (Twitter, facebook, etc) we want to help you make those experiences richer and easier.

We don't have an iPhone app right now, but the iPhone's built in email capabilities are hard to beat. Email video from the camera, multiple photos from the photo library, audio posts from the Voice Memos app... we handle everything perfectly.

Posterous also does private sites, simply add a password. This is great because it means you can start a family blog and give access to your family members just by giving them the url and password, they don't need accounts.

We already have an API people are using to build new tools. Theming and customization is coming soon, of course.

If there's anything you're looking for in a web publishing platform, please email us at help@posterous.com

    Kudos on the response, Sachin.

    Sachin,

Thanks for the response. Really nice to hear plans for the site directly from the founder!

I'm researching and recommending ways that large nonprofits and government (local and regional planners) can engage community members in a grassroots/participatory blogging system.

Right now, my top guns are wordpress, tumblr, and posterous; and frankly we just might use all three! Lots to do.

I have to say I was impressed with your facebook photo integration, I haven't seen anything close to that! Do you plan on providing support for facebook pages? Please let me know.

    Thanks!

    Michael Messina
  • Sachin · 5 months ago
Absolutely. Facebook Pages support is coming *very* soon. Thanks!
  • michaelmessina · 5 months ago
How sweet it is! Now that's a game-changer! But you already knew that... take care Sachin.

I really like how Posterous works. I just wish that the theming system was easier for a screen reader user to customize. I also want to be able to use markdown or another similar markup to format my posts. And my posterous seems to be a little more busy than Tumblr. I like the minimalist approach. I see now that there are comments enabled on Posterous. What comment system is it using?? At the moment, I only have Disqus setup, and Posterous looks different.

    Tumblr gets about 4x the traffic that Posterous does;
    http://siteanalytics.compete.com/tumblr.com+pos...

If tumblr improved their email to post and figured out a way to do those nifty little thumbnails then it would (imo) really take the cake.

I have had accounts at both sites but prefer tumblr because of the great dashboard and customizitation.

A big props to both teams for great work!
  • Kyle4Jesus · 2 months ago
I second that. Tumblr has the best design and customization. Only thing I don't like is the inability of screen reader users to access my audio/video files. I want download links like those on Posterous.
  • DarkZephix · 5 months ago
I am sticking to Pixelpipe. I loved posterous, but with having a new iPhone 3gs... and when you email out you lose tons of quality and size... emailing just isnt great to me anymore.

I just use the "pixelpipe iphone app" and upload my FULL HQ (none trimmed) video to pixel and they push it to my FB, Youtube, and Twitter at full size.

I HATE HAVING TO TRIM MY VIDEOS TO EMAIL THEM! PIXEL ALLOWS UP TO 200MBS!!!!

Emailing is great... but when you email you LOST the HQ on youtube and about 35% of the size on FB.

    Cheers

"emailing just isnt great to me anymore"

I feel the same, I'm ready to move past email, it feels so archaic (I hope Google Wave can change that). Maybe they'll create an iPhone app.

I am using both. But I think your write up is biased towards Posterous. It has some catching up to do. I like Tumblr, for its design, simplicity and community.
  • Mathias Eichler · 5 months ago
Thanks, I came to the same conclusion after testdriving both systems for awhile! Posterous is amazing for autoposting instantly!

Posterous is a product of Y Combinator with the help of startup guru paul graham which has me believe that the many other helpful startup resources within Y Combinator (such as justin.tv, dropbox, scribd) will help further innovation and push posterous to the top

I love my posterous account. The one thing I wish it had is more design options.
  • Brandon Mendelson · 5 months ago
I've been looking for a comparison of the two. Thank you. I'm thinking at this point, Posterous is going to run away with it. Tumblr has been around longer but has not maintained it's buzz (and many continue to pan it for the lack of Google juice, although I think that is unfair).
  • Fadi Rizk · 5 months ago
posterous is my new favourite thing on the web! it's simplicity is unbeatable.
i also love the clean look that it has so i don't care for customizing that much.

they just gotta do what they've been doing and they should have no problems

I've been using Posterous for about a year now. Ditched my WP because I found that I was getting really lazy about signing in, uploading pics, editing, etc. Posterous got me posting more frequently again because it was so easy to open up a new message in Gmail or send pics from Picasa. I may go back to WP for more customization and use Posterous as a means to post. Though I'm sure more customization and features are in the works and can't wait to see that.

Another plus side of the Autopost to Everywhere feature in Posterous is that it already includes Tumblr! So you don't have to pick one or the other. :)
  • phineaspoe · 5 months ago
I agree, why does it have to be one or the other? I use both. The thing is, I hardly ever go to the Posterous site. It's actually easier to post if you do it through email instead of visiting the site and they email you the content of the blogs you follow from the site so there isn't a lot of need to visit. I don't know if that will be a good thing for them in the long run.

You've missed soup.io, it's good service for tumblelogs too.

  • jay · 5 months ago
i have used both, i agree posterous is simple fast and works well if you need a live streaming blog (props garry) however the lack of themes, and more importantly unable to customize and add code gives tumblr a huge advantage for the time being i imagine :)
  • jay · 5 months ago
tumblr all the way! :) my tumblr blog at http://jay.to

I love Posterous, so easy to email pix, vids fr Nokia 6210c to Twitter, Facebook etc. Tumblr def has more users, so it's interesting to see Sachin from Posterous say that "no matter where your communities are...we want to help you make those experiences richer and easier"

I hope that means that rather than trying to compete with Tumblr to create a "community", Posterous will promote itself as a *supplement* to Tumblr. Example: If you're not in the USA, you might want to email a voice post from your mobile phone to your Tumblr, but you can't (I've tried, Tumblr only accepts audio posts in mp3 format and my phone records in .amr format).

You CAN do that with Posterous, and you can also then autopost the audio to your tumblr account. So people in the very active Tumblr community who want better mobile posting would have a reason to use Posterous as a backup.

If you're looking to build a community or raise your profile online, I doubt that Posterous *in itself* will be very good for that. Posterous' logical strength is being a one-stop shop for posting to the other sites where people meet and keep in touch with people, like Twitter, Facebook, Flickr, YouTube, and so on.

Another logical service for Posterous would be a unified sign in for commenting on blogs like this. That might sound silly, taking on both Facebook Connect and Twitter, but I would love it if this comment would get automatically posted to my Posterous, my Twitter and my Facebook all at once with a link back to this article so people can follow the link, read the article, and comment from me and other people. (I'm logged in through Twitter Connect so it will ONLY go to Twitter).
  • Anthony · 5 months ago
Hey great posterous idea! A unified login so this comment showed up on my posterous account would be great! (..in a sidebar category labeled "social comments")
  • Justine · 5 months ago
I vote posterous. The only people that use tumblr live in NY.
  • Chris · 4 months ago
About a month late on this reply, but ouch. :P

I'm in NY and use Posterous over Tumblr.
  • Chris · 4 months ago
Annoyingly enough, Facebook Connect didn't kick in on that comment.
  • SCHEFF (San Diego) · 5 months ago
Tumblr for the ease and community of people posting there. think you can post to Posterous and it can auto update your tumblr account for you. How many places do we need to be on,? That is the issue.
Posterous = Pro business, Tumblr seems to have a more creative thing... IMHO.

  • David Jackmanson · 5 months ago
If you're happy with what Tumblr can already do, there's no reason to use Posterous.

But if you wanted to (for example) post to Tumblr a lot from a mobile phone, and include videos and voice posts in those posts, then using Posterous to post to your Tumblr could be useful. It all depends what you want to do.
  • Hasan Luongo · 5 months ago
excellent post! two great tools, for me its all about posterous, the realization of email as a blog posting format is amazing. its handles media so well, community is a big lag and I've always been frustrated that my two posterous sites share the same profile. themes will be huge, and I would like to post, then choose which sites to push it to. I didn't know you could select which sites to autopost to using email addresses, but that wont work if you run two blogs and use the diff email addresses to select which blog to post to. by far posterous is my fav web app. pls work on autopost so its not a default but an Advanced option so i can select which sites to push content to without confusing my two blogs.

    (very) well done!

I guess we've come to this conversation a little late, it's interesting that no one seems to have mentioned the use of Posterous as an alternative to Ping.fm to selectively or automatically update your various statuses/blogs. It then has the added bonus of acting as a single feed that people who want to see everything you produce can subscribe to. As a blogging platform, I can see it getting better, but for now it lacks enough features to make me stick with other platforms (customization aside, I want to be able to upload photos directly on the site, rather than via email or a link). That said, it's an excellent dashboard to quickly fire off new photos to Flickr, new videos to YouTube, new blogs to Tumblr, Wordpress, Blogger et al, and new statuses to pretty much everywhere-- all without leaving the inbox.

More here, if you want it: http://myotter.posterous.com/posterous-vs-pingf...

I'm enjoying using Posterous and the feature which picks up images from a web p age you're posting is neat, although many (sometimes all) seem to be banner ads on the page. It seems hard to get rid of these, meaning my posts are littered with ads. Any suggestions? Deleting the HTML does seem to help, strangely.

Posterous is really great at posting instantly to various social networking sites... There are lot many social sites which has to be included in posterous. Anyway..

One thing which I like the most is I can post to various blogs from my company in which all these sites are blocked, yet I can publish them from my email... Isn't it simply superb???
  • sikku · 3 months ago
Had it been better if @posterous had support for @Disqus
  • phildunn · 3 months ago
Posterous takes links I share from the bookmarklet then hyperlinks them to my Posterous feed instead of the original article. I don't really like that. Strange how it grabs the image, too. It makes my Facebook people jump through too many hoops to see the content, for example. I've heard that sharein is better for this type of process.
