If you're going to dish out $200 for a device, then $40 a pop, you want serious graphics, extensive gameplay and a solid control scheme - none of which the iPhone can offer. What the iPhone can and is doing is open up gaming to casual, non-gamers who have 3 minutes to fill while waiting for the train.

Re: Portable Gaming: Can Apple Take Down Nintendo and Sony?

This is where the line to Iphone gaming and PSP gaming exists. Atari age games like "Space Invaders" or the Win95 era of SimCity are no competition to anything you'll get on the PSP. Meanwhile PSP titles are going to be intense, full fledged games with tons of content. Sure I can get an Iphone game for $5 bucks, but Spore for mobile for $5.99 is nothing like the $49 retail package on a console/PC.

The sheer amount of apps has been because the app store friendly to start-up developers, and the open platform they've provided has been huge in the fact that you've got tons of companies and people working to program the +20,000 gaming apps in the App Store, all hoping their next title will be their big break. A fair amount of those apps however, are small or minimalistic, and the line is drawn where the $5 mobile app with 15 minutes of content is nothing compared to a $40 PSP game that will keep you entertained for hours upon hours.

Not to derail on the subject too far, but the bigger challenge is the iPhone in the mobile industry. I've already noticed that the App Store has been a huge success for Apple, 3rd party apps are really what makes a smartphone stand out. People are developing iPhone apps all the time, ignoring the fact that BlackBerry still has a bigger user base on the Smartphone category and are restricted to one carrier in the US. However, early 2009 sent Window's Phone and BlackBerry scrambling to put together something to compete with the App store, and the subsequent Windows Marketplace and BlackBerry App World certainly has been a fair alternative to tout the apps that are built for Blackberry or built for Windows Phone.

Mobile app gaming is definitely on the rise, I disagree that mobile apps are big enough to take down the hand-held platform. The main line to cross is that the customers buying App Store or Marketplace or App World apps are probably going to be tech-savvy mobile adults, and are not your PSP or DS customers. Just like the invention of the VCR didn't kill cable television, Apples introduction into mobile gaming isn't going to kill the hand-held gaming platforms.

Re: Portable Gaming: Can Apple Take Down Nintendo and Sony?

Belmont, there are no games I am aware of that take full advantage of the faster iPhone 3GS's graphics chip. The hardware is there; the developers just have to take advantage of it.

Re: Portable Gaming: Can Apple Take Down Nintendo and Sony?

I love playing games on my iPhone 3GS. I am not a hardcore gamer, but this thing erases any desire I ever had for a dedicated portable gaming system. Plus, the A-list games are just starting to come out. A year from now, the iPhone platform will have just as many big-name games, if not more, than the dedicated portable consoles.

Also, think about this: the revenue deal that Apple gives app store developers is way better than what they would get developing for the PSP or DS.

Re: Portable Gaming: Can Apple Take Down Nintendo and Sony?

"You're right, the games are definitely different, but for those of us on the go, and especially in a professional atmosphere, would you be caught dead with a PSP on your lunch break?"

thats a really good point . i guess its alot more acceptable for the older generation to have ipods and not so much hand held games machine (which really are no differnt to an ipod now days anyway.)

Re: Portable Gaming: Can Apple Take Down Nintendo and Sony?

I can see that, when you compare the PSP. But that thing's a brick. I take my DS everywhere, as does my girlfriend. DS (DSlite / DSi) is not a one-trick pony.

Re: Portable Gaming: Can Apple Take Down Nintendo and Sony?

Maybe down the line when the ipod touch 3 comes out will you see graphics that can compete with the DS and Psp

Re: Portable Gaming: Can Apple Take Down Nintendo and Sony?

haha never happening!

Re: Portable Gaming: Can Apple Take Down Nintendo and Sony?

I was sceptical at first, but with games out like Real Racing, Eliss, Space Invaders Infinity Gene, Rolando etc. I value the iPhone more as a portable gaming device than PSP or DS.

Re: Portable Gaming: Can Apple Take Down Nintendo and Sony?

The truth is , I was on the verge of getting a PsP but I had a sudden change of mind when I tried out gaming on my iPhone. It was not only awesome but very affordable. I have ditched my PSP dreams and rolling with apple it's it's promising and will beat Nintendo and Sony in no time. Apple Rocks!!!!!!!!!

Re: Portable Gaming: Can Apple Take Down Nintendo and Sony?

The statement made Apple sound like Sony at press conferences at E3. Sony has a history of saying ridiculous things with regard to gaming: They said very plainly that they believed their fan base would pay anything for their systems, and then announced that it would cost gamers $600, to the tune of THIRD place this generation.

Apple sounds pretty arrogant with regard to gaming on the iPod Touch. The games that Nintendo has, the characters that they have are the LEGACY characters that people know and love and can always expect great things from. Mario, Link, Samus, etc. Not only that, but the DS has proven that two screens are better than one with regard to hand-held gaming.

Re: Portable Gaming: Can Apple Take Down Nintendo and Sony?

No Multi-Touch user interface
Games are expensive
No App Store
No iPod

But they do have buttons. Cartridges/discs you can sell if you don't want the game anymore. Batteries that don't suck (as much). And the ESRB reviews content for those systems - with ratings, not rejections.

Re: Portable Gaming: Can Apple Take Down Nintendo and Sony?

The iPhone is a class on its own, it can be never be compared to devices like the PSP or DSi, which are actually made for gaming! The way I see it, if you're always on the go: iPhone. A gamer who is always on the go: PSP or DSi. I'd say grab a PS3 and enjoy lol.

Re: Portable Gaming: Can Apple Take Down Nintendo and Sony?

I like the gaming on the Touch, but I don't think I'd replace my Wii or PS2 for it. But I would chose it over a DS or PSP because it's more than just games. The graphics are just getting better and better, although some games are a bit hard to play (due to no real buttons to punch).

Re: Portable Gaming: Can Apple Take Down Nintendo and Sony?

it's funny how Phil Schiller thinks that the 21k+ games in the app store proves some kind of advantage of the DSi and PSP. 98% of those games aren't even worth the time to download, free or not.

Re: Portable Gaming: Can Apple Take Down Nintendo and Sony?

iphones and ipods don't have buttons. you need buttons to play real games, not multi-touch displays. apple only has a shot with people who game to kill time while on the go. no one will ever buy an iphone or ipod to play games.

Re: Portable Gaming: Can Apple Take Down Nintendo and Sony?

My wife was an avid PSP gamer until I bought her a iPhone 3GS for a belated Christmas present, since that time, she's never looked back. You're right, the games are definitely different, but for those of us on the go, and especially in a professional atmosphere, would you be caught dead with a PSP on your lunch break? If you're riding public transportation, or on the plane, would you want to carry the extra weight of a PSP in your carry on luggage, or just play games on something you're going to use anyway, like an iPhone. It is apples and oranges (sorry for the pun), but the portability, customization, and multi-faceted usability of the iPhone makes the PSP or DSI a one trick pony.
