Mashable - The Social Media Guide: POLL: Windows 7 Outlasts Snow Leopard in Reader Vote

  • Jeff · 1 month ago
Wow I did not see this coming, it was a mashable poll after all>.>

    But yay win7!
  • Jason Rukus · 1 month ago
Yay Windows it only took you since Windows 98 to release something that wasn't horrible!

To be fair I hear Snow Leopard is a bit buggy so I am glad Windows finally released something that wasn't complete garbage so Apple doesn't get lazy. If they make my favorite OS suck I will be unhappy.
  • BFAChris · 1 month ago
XP is the most popular OS of all time. It runs extremely well in just about any form factor and even when virtualized. XP was a win in MSFT's court.
  • Adam Haider · 1 month ago
Why does everything have to be a competition with you people. The majority who actually participate in these sorts of irrelevant polls are ones who have no clue about technology. Whether you are using Windows or Mac OSX, you are still doing the same thing with the Operating System. You are still performing the same tasks, still running applications in order to perform those tasks and you still require the same level of participation in order to manage and run those tasks correctly. We should be focusing on computer technology whereby we eradicate the use for Operating Systems and look to bigger and better things. Computing power is so great now that we have no use for Operating Systems. WebOS technologies that make use of the cloud will be far more useful to us. So stop with these childish arguments about things that don't matter.
  • Adam Haider · 1 month ago
There will never be a definitive answer to which OS is better, because all operating systems essentially model the same principles. Put Windows, OSX and Linux side by side and you will find out that the principles of how we interact with the OS is the same. You need a mouse in most cases to use it, you need to run applications on top of the OS to perform functions and so on. Only when the people designing these Operating Systems figure out that they need to start thinking outside of the box and offer something new, we will see some real activity within the marketplace. Personally I'm bored of technology at the moment. We need another 1984 moment, if we are ever going to succeed in bringing out new technology that will benefit us. I'm sure Steve Wozniak would agree.
  • r0cketman22 · 1 month ago
Thanks for breaking it down, but it's more or less a tongue-in-cheek post. I mean, c'mon, "Who Would Win in A Fight?" It's not scientific tear-down comparison post by any means.

Why's everything a competition? Because it needs to be. Without one company trying to out-do the other, innovation would be stifled.

Bored with technology? I get AMAZED at least once a weak, I swear.
  • Adam Haider · 1 month ago
I know. My frustration is that the ratio of tong and cheek posts to actual informative ones is beginning to increase. No one would win in a fight because there is nothing that is able to challenge what we have so far. We need to wait for a shift in technological advancements for us to even comprehend a real face-off. It's true there is a need for competition, in fact in an earlier Mashable post I pointed out that competition brings the best out of companies, especially in Tech as it promotes productivity. However, I'm leaning towards the fact that there is an awful amount of discussion with regards to which OS is better when really they both do the same thing just in different ways, these differences are important to note but not so important that it would make a bit of difference which one you picked because most of us largely use the Internet now in our day to day activities on a computer, so using an Operating System would now be a decision based on the needs of the user and personal preference. You can view it similar as to how some of us feel about religion—Just pick one, stick with it and be happy.
  • Arthur Baynes · 1 month ago
    Adam:

Well said. Actually, as far as an actual OS goes, I'm not sure what I actually need outside of a decent web browser anymore. Most everything I do can be done within Google Chrome.

As a web designer, the only "real" application I use is Photoshop. Everything else, including my text editor can be done, like I said, within a browser.

In the corporate world cloud computing makes sense, in the personal computing market I think it is a formula for disaster. Try your cloud computing at 10,000 feet on an airplane. Can you say subscription based computing? You like the idea of paying a monthly subscription fee to connect to the cloud and a subscription price for every program you want to use??? No thanks. I'll stick with the OS wars.
  • Adam Haider · 1 month ago
I agree with you cloud-computing isn't the best way forward for consumers, however I'm simply speaking in regards to the direction the industry is going, this isn't my opinion. Nor is an opinion valid because the Internet will transition into Web2 anyway in 2011 where ALL Internet users will be required to use the cloud if they wish to carry on using their ISP service. The OS war will soon vanish within the coming years, you'll see.
  • jaycclee · 1 month ago
I don't know how people decide which is better. Do they have both Windows 7 and Snow Leopard systems at side, so they can be objective enough to make the decision? Or they just picked one they favored but by not using other system at all.
  • bernd · 1 month ago
Let's clarify the vote result: Apple won overwhelmingly. Why? Approximately 80% of the users here use Windows and have never really used Snow Leopard. You should multiply the Leopard number by 4!! Otherwise this survey it's really valid.

Yes, I love Snow Leopard :-)

New Apple MacBook Pro Review - What is it Made Of, Is it Worth Owning One?

    Just the Facts About Laptops

This is a lame poll. The only way someone could make a reasonable comparison is if he/she was knowledgeable of both OSes. Otherwise, why would a PC user vote for Snow Leopard if he/she has never used it, and vice versa. It boils down to user numbers, and MS obviously dominates that arena.

I build and program PCs and just bought a Mac. I don't think I will go back, my several PCs sit idle while I love he Mac.
  • ForeScene_Creative · 1 month ago
You could never compare Windows and Mac. It’s like comparing a small independent nicely decorated coffee shop with the humongous Starbucks chain. They clearly don’t share the same challenges and consumer dependability while developing the OS. Think about all the financial systems across the world that run on Windows (all of them I’m sure), the government systems, Wall Street, NASA, the medical industry, the Army, all billion dollar companies (except Apple :-)), all IT depts. across the world, the personal user and so on… you get the idea. And what about all the 3rd party software (millions) that need to be consider and make compatible while developing Windows. What does Apple need to worry about while developing the OS? Designers? (nothing against designers) and making sure Photoshop runs ok? What about all the security challenges Windows faces? They say Macs are virus proof, not true, the fact is that the percentage of Mac users is so small that virus creators don’t even find it worth to attack. What about the demographic? Macs have nice graphics, video and photo software but how is that useful to your lawyer, doctor, accountant, financial advisor, grandparents? Besides all the gadgets and fun tools what else do we use a Mac for that’s important… ? Well, we use it for school and professional work. What tools we use within the Mac to accomplish these important (if not the most important) tasks. Microsoft Office!

Even with all these challenges Windows can still compete with Apple at their own game.

Steve job could never fill Bill Gates’ shoes. Imagine they switched roles. I’m sure Apple’s superb customer services will diminish with the 10 fold increase in demand and challenges and the world depending on Apple’s systems.

Who else you know that has or can develop and execute a product to serve the entire world! Even small businesses can’t keep all their clients happy and you expect Microsoft to satisfied the entire world.

I have both, Macs & PCs (I own a medium web design company). I love my Mac but I’m also realistic.

By the way I’m typing this message from a MacBook. lol

Poll fail. Anyone who thinks windows 7 is better than snow leopard is stupid.
I agree, it has more feature UPGRADES from Vista, but if it was just 1 v 1, as it is, Snow Leopard would win.
I just can't see how you would prefer it over Snow Leopard.
  • tom · 1 month ago
By using words like stupid, you have stooped quite low Matt.

Maybe you and users like you like paying more for less.
  • r0cketman22 · 1 month ago

  • princeword · 1 month ago
Obviously, the OS you're using will be where you put your vote and since Windows 7 is both newer on the market (in the now) and has more potential users (mostly due to prizes) the result is only natural.
  • Civrock · 1 month ago
Assuming all Windows users that read Mashable voted for Win 7 and all Mac users that read Mashable voted for Snow Leopard... clearly there's a bit of a bias here due to market share. But hey, it's an online poll!

And no, for the naive, market share ≠ quality in case of operating systems or personal computers in general...
  • Jeff · 1 month ago
Yeah I bias towards Apple... note the Smartphone Poll

    http://mashable.com/2009/10/29/iphone-wins/
  • Civrock · 1 month ago
Note the discrepancy in OS and smartphone markets. :)
  • Jeff · 1 month ago
Your post was based on market share, Symbian should of been on top by a good amount.
  • Fred Alvari · 1 month ago
OSX has what? Like maybe 12 percent of the market? Still far down the list. Windows 7 is what Vista should have been in the first place.
  • Nick · 1 month ago
Dare I say it but even as an Apple user I voted against Apple this time as I'm most impressed at Windows new effort on this one having tried both OSes. Microsoft has really stepped up their game this time with all the testing prior to official release, about time they got something right.
  • Yoyo · 1 month ago
That still seems like a win for Apple, especially when you consider the kind of market share Windows possesses.
  • Chris · 1 month ago
If only the people who have "no preference" voted Mac, would of been a tie! :P
  • Flanjygo · 1 month ago
I voted "no preference" because I would pick Ubuntu 9.10 over Windows 7 and Snow Leopard

I would of voted for Snow Leopard and for Twitter. The rest I don't really use.
  • Jerry Zambrano · 1 month ago
It's no surprise to me. I'd gladly use/test the OS's against each other. However this would mean separate hardware. With Windows and Linux, no prob. I have to say, Windows 7 def. got my vote. I would've loved to use more of Apple products, but I think they will have to move away from the OS to the stand alone accessories (iPod, iPone, iTunes iAnything) that will out compete anything MS.
  • gospel9 · 1 month ago
Never knew this poll existed. Windows 7 is lacking so much compared to Snow Leopard. SL is a real OS upgrade. OpenCL and GCD, the Expose refinements, and a completely rewritten Finder that screams in speed. People are missing out.
  • Rajio · 1 month ago
a "War erupted" eh? Its that kind of hyperbole which escalates this conversation way out of proportion in the first place. Lets get back to reality please.
  • wackerow · 1 month ago
The only thing I don't like about this poll is that, unlike Twitter vs Facebook (for example), users do not necessarily have easy access to trying both in depth. Twitter and Facebook are both free and can be used side by side by anyone on any computer. I'd be willing to bet the majority of people who voted only run Windows 7 OR Snow Leopard (or neither, and are just guessing).

I have a laptop with Windows 7, and an iMac with Snow Leopard, and use them side-by-side every day. I must say, after growing up on Windows, then switching to Mac OS for several years, I have found myself using Windows 7 for nearly everything now except playing videos (my iMac has a bigger screen).
  • karlp · 1 month ago
Now if you showed us the stats from browser sniffing the voters and their votes this would be interesting, but as it is presented this worth nothing.

Errrrrr Let me see... This is the first poll on the Internet that Win7 beat Snow Leopard. Hummm Interesting... Mashable Poll = FAIL.
  • SidianMSJones · 1 month ago
Apple only has 12% market share and they still nearly beat out the Windows OS? DAMN they are good.
  • geschenke für männer · 1 month ago
I’m going to upgrade and hope for the best. I have a new harddrive enclosure coming so I can backup my music and videos. Past that I’m ready. I would have installed a prerelease version if I didn’t feel like it was so unethical. I’m sure, since it was made for new macbooks and such that it will be fine. An older macbook, maybe i’d be a little more hesitant. But I trust Apple to make a product that should for the most part go off without a hitch. I may wait a few minutes before I install to make sure there are no major bugs though.

Go F'ing figure, with 93% of the market, you think they'd be able to get at least a 50% of the votes, right?

When are you guys going to realize these polls are dumb, don't actually say anything, and dilute your brand for the people you are trying to attract - the web savvy early adopter.
  • Dan · 1 month ago
I don't understand what "Microsoft has 93% of the market so obviously they would win" has anything to do with it.
Does all 93% of those Microsoft users read this article? No.
You MacFanBoys just need to accept that you can't win.
Maybe accept the face Microsoft is better?
or you can just leave a (not so) witty hate comment on how I'm wrong.
    :)
  • Shaun · 1 month ago
The fact that Microsoft has 93% market share does matter in an accurate poll. The base rate of PC users compared to Mac users is extremely skewed toward PC's having a huge advantage and PC should win. Unless PC users really hate their OS, which wouldn't surprise me :P

The poll shows us one thing and isn't which OS is better. It shows us an estimate of the approximate percentage of OS users who read Mashable.

  • takechargeofyourbusiness · 1 month ago
I am not sure this is an entirely reasonable way to conduct this survey. Are any of these seven thousand voters qualified to cast a vote? have they spent sufficient time with both OS's to be able to make a judgement? The answer is no, these people have voted on the basis that they are advocates for the camp that they happen to fall into, and if there is anyone still stupid enough to be in the Microsoft camp after the Pup that was Vista then surely they should have votes deducted to compensate for the obvious lack of intelligence. Had I voted it would have been for Mac OSX on the basis that since i moved to Mac I wouldn't touch anything produced by Microsoft with a shitty stick.
  • Booneyrat · 1 month ago
Microsoft has never put out any OS that wasn't full of bugs . I will stick with Mac and Linux . No more Microshaft for me .
  • stevesidea · 1 month ago
considering the marketshare windows has over mac, it shouldn't have even been close
shows you how apple is still winning the perception war if you ask me
  • Luis · 1 month ago
Of course, if you take into account that 95% of people uses MS, and 5% uses Macs, then the poll numbers need to be weighted by the sample bias. So normalise the number of votes as follows
    3632/.95 = 3823 Normalised votes for W7
    3278/.05 = 65,560 Normalised votes for SL

Under this light, the results are not so great for W7, are they?
  • Kanon · 1 month ago
Although I like apple' creative I will still support the windows operation.
  • Dick · 1 month ago
I think windows 7 is better than snow leopard.
  • davey · 1 month ago
The only thing this poll shows, is that most readers on mashable are windows users.
  • woxxy · 1 month ago
Something that people don't consider here is that Mac users are more likely to browse websites like this, and that of the 95% that are "Windows users", there's many more computers that aren't even connected to the internet, while Mac users 99% are.

Don't jump at conclusions with Mac and Windows users like they were the same kind of user. They have different setting, different interests, and also different $$$. And, sorry for bluntness, most of Mac users are also "MacFags", if you know what I mean, and a lot of Windows users despise their OS blindly, without having ever tried Snow Leopard.

So "normalizing" the result by using percents is stupid to do.

If I was here earlier, I would have voted Windows 7 over SL.

Microsoft made an OS matching SL, improving many concepts, and it works on EVERY machine, while SL has bugs even on Apple computers. I feel missing features in my SL, after using Windows 7. Considering that Apple has an OS working on their own Apple machines, and can't do a better job, Windows 7 has all my support.
  • michal333 · 1 month ago
come on this poll is balls. Majority of people using Windows have never even seen Mac OS. How do you expect any poll of this kind to be any accurate?
