Mashable - The Social Media Guide: POLL: Firefox Smacks Down Google Chrome in Reader Vote

  • Kevin Eklund · 2 months ago
38% is still pretty darn good considering the comparatively short amount of time Chrome has been available. I'm on Firefox 90% of the time but I'd move to Chrome in a heartbeat if it supported RoboForm and a few of the add-ons I use in FF. Chrome is so much lighter and it feels faster. It also seems to perform much better than Firefox when visiting Facebook, which causes FF to freeze for me from time to time.
  • mashable · 2 months ago
Agree - Chrome has grown its market share rapidly. It's only a year old.
  • pranman · 2 months ago
I agree. In fact, I've introduced Chrome to a number of non-techies, regular folks, like my parents. Once they've used it they really don't feel like going back to IE or FF ever again. Chrome is cleaner, its got a more appealing (and uncluttered) interface and its features are intuitive, like the 'recently closed tabs' and its 'paste and go' functionality among others.
  • Sridhar Katakam · 2 months ago
An alpha release of RoboForm for Chromium is now available.

These 2 browsers are a world apart. I dont think its a fair contest between them. Chrome is fast and is quickly picking up some great features, but a lot of the essentials mean its not possible to live on Chrome alone. If I come across an RSS feed chrome just spits out a scrambled page when I click on it. Plus chromes speed dial is the weakest of them all, you cant even manually choose what goes in. For me a fair contest would be between Firefox and Opera, and Opera would win everytime for its speeddial, syncronizing and built in mail client, features the other browsers are still working on!!

it's not really a win or lose situation here. what, based on 8821 votes and you go "Firefox SMACKS DOWN Google Chrome"? c'mon... everyone has their own preferences just like BlackBerry vs iPhone (for eg). how many people actually know the existance of mashable.com anyway?
  • Σχολή Χορού · 2 months ago
how many people actually know the existence of mashable.com anyway? Well .... you do for example.
  • bzhuo373 · 2 months ago
We should be talking about web neutrality not bashing each other over the head.
  • Robert Dean · 2 months ago
Couldn't agree more. The Firefox or Chrome bashing is pointless. They help each other out and each has strengths. Chrome is faster and has a clean process separation model, and Firefox is more efficient in memory management and has a wealth of plugins available.

Personally, I'm glad that these browsers are competing, because the competition pushes the envelope forward much faster than the glacial pace we had when IE stood alone.
  • dannyroa · 2 months ago
I agree. I actually use both though Chrome is my primary browser.

I use Firefox if I need Firebug when I'm coding or some other extension.
  • bzhuo373 · 2 months ago
I often use chrome at work and firefox at home but I recently realized that there are pages chrome cannot be used for but firefox can be used for, has anyone experienced this? I know firefox is open source and has lots of good plugins one reason why I like them but I wonder since google is a corporation like microsoft is chrome open source? I promote open source but I also promote consumer choice - the consumer has the right to choose whatever browser they like and browsers must be able to allow customers to view all webpages.

    Chrome + Extensions > Firefox
  • muiomuio · 2 months ago
Firefox wins for me just because of the personalization options available.
Opera has been the fastest browser I use but Chrome is for sure gaining on every browser.

This jsut answered, which one is more popular but not better. Voting is useless.
  • JackBresler · 2 months ago
Could it be that Mashable's readership profile made for a "fixed" fight?
  • Corrosive · 2 months ago
I'm running both...and IE8, Opera 10 and Flock. Each one has their charms and frustrations but Chrome just wins it for me.
  • Matt Hudson · 2 months ago
Firefox is the best - hands down!
  • Sridhar Katakam · 2 months ago
as long as it doesn't start crashing.
  • @seemasugandh · 2 months ago
So obvious. They just need more marketing. Google has a ton of dough - the freaking Disney of the web... gee i wonder who's going to win this one eventually?
For the record I LOOOOVE my foxxy Firefox.
  • charitygeek · 2 months ago
Honestly, I've started using both. I use Chrome for browsing speed and Firefox for plugins while developing. So I vote for a draw.
  • Dror Zaifman · 2 months ago
Frankly I am not surprised that Firefox is the winner. Faster, more reliable and is supported by more people in terms of add-ons.
The reason that Chrome grew so quickly is because of the appearance that it's lighter or better. Google media machine puts it in people's face on nearly every Google page and suggests to them that they download it for this reason or that reason so people after a while think those reasons are valid but FireFox is still a better browser because of the larger number of people working and testing it.
The add-ons also have a huge impact to make browsing better.
  • Ethan James · 2 months ago
Faster? What tests results have you been reading ? On stating up times Chrome wins hands down and when rendering pages Chrome always wins because of its javascript engine and multi-threaded processing.

The reason firefox grew so quickly in the first place was because it was and still is financially supported by google, I belive the majority of the money injected into Firefox is from google.
  • The Wandering Foodie · 2 months ago
@Dror - Yeah, Ethan is right about the fast thing. I have a mac and am just biding my time until Chrome arrives.
  • kaolin fire · 2 months ago
I've been using the dev channel of the OS X Chrome, and while it's not feature-complete I've been finding it more than ready for my uses. Fast, pretty, shiny. =)
  • Pimlico75 · 2 months ago
Chrome is just so functional - if you close a tab by mistake it's there to be opened again, open a tab and there are your commonly used pages, type and whatever you want to do appears. I have FF and use it when necessary, but for utility Chrome is an obvious winner.
  • pranman · 2 months ago
Exactly. The one feature I use most in Chrome is copy a URL and use the 'paste and go' in the address bar. It just seems so intuitive and after getting used to this feature I just can't make my way back to FF or IE - even for a 2 minutes browsing session (and no, I don't want to enable this feature in FF by downloading some plugin).
  • Sameer · 2 months ago
If you close a tab accidentally, you have to just press Ctrl+Shift+T to reopen it. Or else you can go to the History menu and can get all the recently closed tabs. And you don't even have to open a new tab for this!

Of course I'm not saying that FF is better than Chrome because of such small functionality. But what makes FF better is that it is customizable because of add-ons. Its your choice whether you want something in the browser or not. And certainly there are more options or functionalities available in FF! So I <3 FF.
  • Shitij Nigam · 2 months ago
    Ditto.
  • YuriBCN · 2 months ago
How's about a three-way contest between these two and IE8? BTW, the fight between FF and Chrome is really between function and speed. If you strip FF, it's gdmn fast, too! How fast would Chrome be with a pile of addons?
  • sidharth · 2 months ago
Chrome has achieved much more technically in 1 year than Firefox could. And who needs extensions anyway. Speed of Chrome just kills everything else for me. And the trademark simplicity and clean interface of Google just about makes it perfect.
  • dvd rohlinge · 2 months ago
Hurray!!!!! There is no doubt that firefox is the better than chrome because it is easy to use and gives better speed than google.....
  • Mike · 2 months ago
This is like asking who wins between Microsoft and Yahoo for Search champion.

Firefox will always win for me as long as they have these incredible themes and add-ons! (Oh and I use Chromifox as my theme :)

I love both Google Chrome and Firefox taking into consideration the product features of both browsers especially Chrome and I also love Firefox for its personalization features. For me, both are great browsers for me and no question about that. For more web browser comparison, I think Grydz.com might help us decide what is the best web browser. i really don't get the hype about the results. FF won by 14%? And that's an achievement?! Can you please look into statistics that show FF and Chrome statistic on N0. of downloads and usage? FF has much greater % there, so if you compare that one with the results you just got, this isn't that flash and bang what you'd like to make out of it...
  • The Wandering Foodie · 2 months ago
Exactly. This post is pretty much an advertisement for chrome to the informed. To the uninformed, it's a reason to hold on to the status quo.

Google Chrome > Firefox. It's much more faster and more user-friendly. GC was out for only a year now. Wait another year and it will bury FF.

I wish that Chrome was available for Macs! That's the only thing that made by transition from PC to Mac difficult. I like Firefox & it's add-ons, but chrome was always really fast and just...better? I don't know how to describe it. Google needs to work on getting it out for Macs ASAP!!!
  • JoshWoodcock · 2 months ago
You can get a Early Access version here (http://www.google.com/chrome/intl/en/eula_dev.h...), it works more or less the same (as far as I can tell), the only important things I found missing were the bookmark manager and the option to go to previous page using backspace.
  • BlackPuma · 2 months ago
I don't know.. I've tried Chrome for about a day, but switched back to Firefox in the end. But I have to admit for a young browser it's pretty good. However, age doesn't necessarily say anything about it, obviously they observed the other browsers closely and learned from their mistakes, avoiding most of the 'beginner status' problems/design-mistakes most browsers had to face.

Still, they made it look quite friendly. But unfortunately it wasn't significantly better when it comes to loading speeds, they're pretty much the same when it comes to that. But seeing as I have like 20+- addons installed on Firefox (Firefox exclusive addons included) which improve the browser significantly (not to speak about how personal it allows me to make it) that I have no real reason to jump to a new browser any time soon. Simply because if there's something I don't like about it, there's (almost) always a addon that can fix it. Improving user friendliness and efficiency.

    With that said I what to underline that Chrome is not a bad browser, it beats Internet Explorer any day, but then again, what doesn't? I don't see the speed difference between Chrome and Firefox, if anything I'd say Firefox is faster for me. I guess my conclusion would be;

''Chrome nifty and nice, but for now Firefox is still slightly better due to it's potential for personal adjustment.''

    "Web Facebook: Overall Results

    Week 1:
    - Mozilla Firefox (Mozilla Firefox) vs. Google Chrome (Google Chrome)
    - WINNER: Firefox, 4600 votes (Chrome: 3310 votes, Tie: 911 votes)"

You mean "Web Faceoff: Overall Results"?
  • Ralph · 2 months ago
I use a heavy java site like www.tabUp.com and it runs pretty well in Firefox, but in Chrome it is very fast. As we see more and more advanced sites Chrome really begins to shine. I also have three PC's in my house and it seems like almost every day one of them wants to install a Firefox update, this is getting pretty old. Chrome on the other hand does a much better job of handling the updates and one of my main reasons for beginning the switch.
  • Walter De Vos · 2 months ago
Because Firefox is not acting on a nasty bug that makes it impossible to watch flash video ( see Bug 490122 https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=49... ) I am forced to use something else. I use Chrome. Video plays like a charm in Chrome.

I have used both but currently rely on firefox for its add-ons.

For me google chrome has worked fine for all the google sites - gmail, orkut, picasa, google, etc. Other than these, both work pretty much the same. Firefox takes time to load when I open it the first time i start my laptop but from then on it gets better ( i have some 10 add ons + the theme...so i guess the loading takes time). I have been a firefox fan since 3 years and still am. Chrome is fine...functionality wise! but overall..i too vote for firefox!
  • abutterflyloves · 2 months ago
I love trying new software. I downloaded Chrome once, and wasn't impressed. Firefox is all I need.
  • mcsolas · 2 months ago
Just don't forget even though a few more users may like firefox, it still doesn't detract from chromes potential usefulness if it does things well. Personally I like to tweak firefox out with all types of mods, which does seem to make it a bit more sluggish on startup, but thats ok.. Im using it for very specific purposes and dont open / close it a lot. For chrome, I started using it when I wanted to do some quick surfing. I like how when your viewing media on some sites, say youtube, it allows you to break the video out into a standalone window. I use that to watch tutorials while working on sites in firefox... stuff like that. imho I think they are both great free applications and its really too early in chromes product lifecycle to line the two up next to each other and declare a winner.

The newest firefox rollout really seemed to make everything lag for me, I had talked to a few friends that experienced the same issue, so i decided to take Chrome for a spin, after only a few days on Chrome I dont think i will be going back!

Firefox is my favorite. I want to give Chrome a shot but haven't gotten around to trying it.
  • benjamin · 2 months ago
Chrome reacts too slowly, at least the beta version did.
    don't know about now tho
  • Sonya A. Willis · 2 months ago
Firefox has been around for what 7 years and Google Chrome just turned 1. 38% is very good considering Firefox has a 6 year lead. I missed taking this poll but count me in for Google Chrome. I have no need for any of the extensions that people around here complain are lacking and I doubt that the average computer user does either.

Most people just want to be able to go online, watch videos, view photos, etc. Chrome does that great. More people just need to find out about it.
  • Stefan · 2 months ago
This doesn't mean FF is a better browser. It just depends on each person's preferences. FF is just too slow for a lot of people, the high level of customization is great, that was the only reason, why I was switching between FF and Chrome for quite a while, but I want to browse web, not wait to browse web with dozen extra functions I don't even use anyway, I just thought they were cool when I was installing them.

Chrome already unofficially supports addons, and only a few, but I'm seriously looking forward to seeing results of this poll after addons get implemented in Chrome fully.
  • andrewfergusson · 2 months ago
Get rid of the Tie option. If people think it's too close to call, they shouldn't vote. That way if there is a tie, it's an actual tie opposed to a "tie" beating the other two options.
  • Naveen · 2 months ago
tho im using Firefox...i just tried out Chrome in the morning by chance...and it was great, being fast and simple...dunno how it would turn out...but i will be sticking with firefox for now...

I think people are habit forming,so people feel used to a particular browser.I use Opera Beta and Chrome. They are both crisp and un-cluttered and fast. Firefox I find gives you information overload. Its too cluttered for me. People want simplicity now.

I tried Chrome for a while but found it too limiting. Chrome may be faster, but Firefox has more features. Until Chrome supports the same plug-ins as Firefox I won't be switching. Additionally Chrome needs to be released properly on Mac OS X. I use both Windows and Mac.

Really, all my friends I moved from any browser to Chrome, stayed at Chrome and they look pretty happy using it.
