Mashable - The Social Media Guide: Ping: Free iPhone-to-iPhone Text Messaging

  • john smith · 2 months ago
i don't get why its a top paid application. it's push notifications don't work most of the time. and it's really buggy.
there's another similar application called whatsapp, and it surely deserves more recognition than ping does.
    cheers.

Whoever first creates reliable multi-platform device-to-device messaging with delivery, read, and typing notifications, wins. (Cross platform Blackberry Messenger aka SMS 2.0)

    You mean like...an IM app?
  • Guest · 2 months ago
Global.AQ 2.0 is going there. from device to device and from device to GSM and from GSM to device. So far iPhone/iPod Touch only but its coming to the Desktop , Android etc.

Its a good idea but I guess that its not apple's official (like RIM's). i don't want to pay for something that nobody uses.
In addition to that if some unoficial sms system will catch, apple will develop its own system, and we won't have to pay a dime.
Now some might say - its only a dollar - but this is the thing about this kind of programs - a dollar here, a dollar there and it sums to a lot. its not that I'm not buying stuff in the app store but this one seems like a waste of money, i wish them good luck.

Yeah I downloaded this last week and I've got a few friends that use the iPod Touch using it so we can all text each other. It's a very good application.

Ping! isn't a free download anymore!? Haha.. that's pretty lame. Glad I got it when it was.

used it for the past few days and it seems like a great app so far. i think the biggest challenge is to get enough people to download and use the app, especially since it's not free anymore. they should have waited till they had more users before deciding to charge.

there seems to be a lag in updating the messages (it just updated after not working for the whole day), and the constant blinking in the message box (quite annoying) needs to be ironed out.

BE CAREFUL! My wife accidentally entered my Ping! ID when she was setting it up on her phone ('cause I said she should get it and I gave her my ID so she could send me messages, but she was confused and used my ID on her phone), and there didn't seem to be any server-side check to prevent her from using my ID.

Does that seem like a MAJOR flaw to you? It does to me.

So... Would she now have control of that ID? Would we both be able to use it? Would we both get messages that were supposed to go to just me? Will John break up with Martha?

I may try it again after it gets updated. And yeah, it's not free anymore.

Nearly everyone has free texts anyway nowadays?

And I really can't believe that it is taken so long to provide this sort of app on the iPhone after the continued success of the built in BB messenger on our blackberrys? In fact I would expect the next major release of iPhone firmware to include a built in messenger of some sort.

PING SUCKS! Download Whatsapp instead. No need to create a username and its interface is way cleaner. Whos wants to memorize another username and password anyways?

TextPlus is MY go to SMS. It's free, unlimited, multi-platform and has PUSH. Ping is a good idea, but the iphone-to-iphone SMS is a limitation (not all my friends have an iphone).

    bought it, won't load ...

This is not free so the headline is misleading. It cost $.99 cents. I will still give it a try.

    >it’s only for iPhone to iPhone messaging, so
    >it can’t quite replace text messaging if your
    >friends use other devices (or, don’t sign up
    >for Ping).

    worthless.

beejiveIM-- iPhone to iPhone, computers, blackberries... via AIM, Google Talk, ICQ, Jabber, MSN, Windows Live, MyspaceIM, Yahoo Messenger, Facebook IM

Why use SMS at all? SMS is for dumb phones.

I tried BeeJiveIM, and it sucked my Iphone 3G, running 3.0, battery in an hour. When I shut of the push notifications, it didn't matter at all. It still sucked my battery from 100% to 20% in an hour and a half. Took BeeJiveIM off and now my battery lasts 3-4 days before I have to charge it. Push sucks on 3.0. I'm waiting until Apple puts out some firmeware to resolve the battery life with push notifications.

yeah. that would be a real show stopper. If it worked that way for me, I'd not be happy with it either. fortunately for me, that hasn't been my experience. I've been having a nearly perfect experience with it. I use it on 3G and wifi. Rarely on Edge. I have been on firmware 3.0 until night before last when I finally broke down and put the latest firmware on it. I hope that doesn't mess it up for me.

    NOT FREE ANYMORE!!

Funny: they have forgotten to use a per default language, and on a French iPhone "STRING_APP_NAME" is displayed instead of the name of the app! (same problem everywhere except in settings)
