Look, when the rumors circulated that the tip of his nose fell off everyone pointed and laughed, now he dies and everyone is saying how tragic it is. My guess is that everyone is a day late and a dollar short. Should have appreciated while he was still around, but that is not what we do as a society. I am merely a 60 yr old pedi nurse who minds her own business in this world. I do NOT follow any blogs or such. I am just an old widow who gets along nicely thank you. HOWEVER, this young man has really caught my attention lately by his foul actions in the pageant, his whiney face after he got punched after baiting that young man from the Black Eyed Peas and his manager had had ENOUGH. Now to be so vile about Michael Jackson causes one to pause and ask...WHAT POSITIVE PURPOSE does this man have on our society? NONE....I propose that he be sent back to whereever he came from so he can live his little whiney life and leave good people alone. I support Perez Hilton. No one thought MJ would actually die and technically what Perez said wasn't wrong! There WAS a similar stunt back in '95 that he mentioned. As far as "damaging" the blog and social media community goes, the social media world takes hemselves way too seriously. The world outside of social media does not regard social media with a whiff a credibility about things reported through it. We know that it is only the ravings of anyone with a kbd and an internet connection. (myself included) Nothing more. Sure, Mashable is at a magazine like quality but social media and blogging on the whole is nothing more than rumor mill and punditry for whatever cause the writer desires to push.
I was trying to research jQuery for a presentation this past week and all that came up was blog after frickin' blog. I had to wade through crazed jQuery fan agendas to find the considerably fewer sincere articles. I found it alarming that there were no actual publications being returned with my Google searches. Everyone's voice has only created "white noise" that cannot be trusted. The barrier to entry of the publishing world has been all but removed. That has not increase quality. It has only increased volume.
Believing that social media is believed to be a respected source is lower than believing Wikipedia is an actual encyclopedia.
Social media is a great tool, but is little more that the world's largest chat room. Where it is amazingly useful is that it provides a snapshot in to where the consciousness of a massive amount of people are at any given moment.

I would like first like to thank you for replying to this without bashing me and I'd also like to thank you for replying to this with your thoughts backed up properly. I really respect this but I have seen far worse examples of "bullying" on the internet so what PH is doing is very tame in comparison. I'm not exactly into his type of comedy but by making fun of well known celebrities he is practicing comedy nonetheless.
As far as "comedic actions" turning into murderous rage I have to say it really depends on many factors. I think the whole murderous rage thing is a bit dramatic but bullied kids have been known to go on to do bad things because of their concealed pain so you're right there. But I can hardly say ALL kids end up like that. I am not saying that actions like PH's are more acceptable since he is an adult but he is making fun of adult celebrities which means that the asses of the jokes are much more likely to let the joke go considering their frontal lobes are fully developed and they aren't pubescent teens dealing with high school. Bullying/joking as kids and bullying/joking as adults can hardly be compared.
I am looking at your last line and it struck me hard. I don't expect you to tell em if you're related to this man but if you are I am sorry for your loss. I love the man's music absolutely but some of the things he has done do not sit well with me. I don't know why you can claim your replies to be "mature". In the first place, why are you even mashing up his professional career with his private, or in this case publicised, life together? People are mourning over the death of the King of Pop, his music, nothing more than that. You don't see anyone going about saying "oh such a pity this child molester is gone!" While MJ was alive and did those despicable things, yes many people frowned against those actions, but now that he's gone people are treating it as a loss of a music legend and nothing more. I don't see why these people should be labelled as two-face since they are willing to put aside his atrocities and mourn the loss of a legend like no other. Plus, it wasn't just "some cool hits in the '80s", that's a gross understatement. Whatever he has done that does not sit well with you, and many of us, remains at that. I am willing to admit that you just verbally and mentally kicked my ass. I feel a little stupid but I'm not going to lie and say I didn't deserve some of that. I understand now that several of the things that I said were rather illogical and biased and irrational and this was mainly because I hadn't soaked all of this in completely before ranting in the manner I did.
My biases came from the fact that child molesters are the people in this world I hate the most and unfortunately MJ was most likely one of them. After speaking to many people like yourself during this ordeal I have come to realize that not many condone his actions and that they were simply mourning the death of the MJ we knew and loved 20 years ago and not the MJ we were stuck with now.
I shall agree that what PH did was a little distasteful but there was no way he could have guessed that MJ was going to die. I don't think that by putting out an apology on his blog he has made up for his actions completely but at least he is making an attempt to. As far as philanthropy goes that's a very tough call since donating money to charities is never a bad thing but some have done it for the wrong reasons, maybe to look better in the limelight for past actions but I would hope that MJ had enough decency to do it for the right reasons so I won't go there until I know more.
All your points are completely valid but I still can't get over the fact that he has done such sick things to kids. I don't know if I'm alone in this but I'm having a very hard time mourning for someone who was a child molester, even if we are mourning for MJ the musician and not MJ the creep.

I don’t either. I can’t forget the fact that MJ was everything that the media reported him to be. A child molester and someone who seems unfit to be a parent. I don’t denounce that. He did those dirty things. And when he meets his creator, he will have to answer for them. And I’m not saying that you have to mourn for him. You’re certainly entitled to mourn for whoever you want to. This was merely explaining why some of us are mourning him.
Like I said before, the fact is that MJ had a FALL from grace. He WAS at one time a charitable human being. And even in his later days he still was. It was a shame that he did what he did. He’s a very sick man. And I don’t mean that as an insult, I honestly think that MJ was a very mentally ill individual who needed help and it’s a shame that he didn’t get it. But what separates us from Perez Hilton is that we can or at should acknowledge the fact that his entire later life was just one huge troubled mess. Even in his younger years, he had a horrible child hood. I mean his song “Have you seen my child hood” speaks for it’s self. Again none of this condone’s his weird nature in the end but it’s just something to look at and see WHY he did what he did.
And while I agree that there was no way that he could’ve guessed that MJ was going to die, it wasn’t about that, as much as it was him JOKING about something as serious as someone going into cardiac arrest. I mean no news report or anyone would ever joke or fake a harsh heart attack. And as for Perez’s apology, I can’t accept because he’s just going to do the something over and again. An apology is useless unless you change who you are. And since He made a career out of being an ass hole to people, it’s unlikely he will do it. And again this is more along the lines of Perez changing his tune at the sound of MJ’s death. I mean he was all scornful at one point and then sorrowful a split second later? He’s the definition of shady in my eyes.
But I can see why you wouldn’t mourn the death of him because, you made a good point too. He did a lot of questionable things that are frowned upon. And I was too. Comedic? Please tell me how taking pictures of children and making hateful comments about them is funny. It is one thing to do that to celebrities as they have to give up part of their privacy when they embark on their career choices, but their children didn't make that choice. There is nothing funny about taking photos of infants, toddlers, children and teens and making comments about their looks, weight, future mistakes, etc.
He is a man who makes money off of being mean. Please don't assign any other virtues to him. In his personal life, he has shown himself to be just as petty as he is on his website. He makes himself out to be the champion of gay people everywhere. He has persecuted everyone who even looked at a gay person sideways. In some cases, his constant badgering and crucifying on his website has cost people their jobs, their homes, and their ability to enjoy their lives. And yet, he chooses to do the exact same thing as his victims and expects to be applauded. I only pity him instead.
Please find a better hero. They certainly do exist. And to anyone who agrees that his reign of terror has gone on way too long already, please feel free to write his advertisers and let them know that you won't support their products as long as they supprt him.

As a high schooler myself I can definitely say that the level of harassment I receive on a daily basis is far worse than what Perez is doing to these celebrities. I am not saying his actions should be excused but for one, they are comedic and two, if I can handle the torment I do then grown celebrities and even the younger ones (Hannah Montana) should be able to handle it. Besides, if they are living such busy lives then why are they sitting around reading the crap talked about them on a gossip blog?
He may make money off being a total dick but we're talking about a guy who was near homeless during the start of his career and then out of nowhere he became big because of his online buzz and his TV appearances. I think that most people would take the same route he did and take the money and keep on blogging. He is not doing anything worse now on his blog than he was at the start. I don't idolize this man but I also don't completely hate him either. Yeah his post was a little distasteful but he couldn't have known MJ was going to die and this didn't need this much attention.
If PH is as attention-hungry as most of us claim he is then he loves this because even bad press is still press. A backlash like this on a blog as popular as this giving him twice as many views so if you're really that disgusted or annoyed by him just stop reading his stuff. All these threats about going to his advertisers are just plain ridiculous since you haven't even given them a full day to speak their minds. For all we know all his sponsors may drop him tomorrow because of this so give it time.

I agree completely. I read Perez on a daily basis and understand his humor. Its not like he made the joke already knowing that he had died. This Mashable article is a bit bias and one-sided. I doubt anyone here reads Perez in the first place (or actually finds him funny) so they don't understand what they're writing about. He has said far "worse" about celebrities. If these people read his blog everyday they would understand that.

Actually, I read his blog everyday for several years. I only stopped the daily reading a few months ago when I got tired of only reading about his vendettas against some people and the butt kissing of others. The site used to be good. Now it is just sad. And the reason is that Perez is no longer the blogger that made it worth reading. Now his ego has taken over and he has fallen victim to thinking he is an A-List celebrity. He isn't. He thinks that he can do or say anything he wants without reprocussions. He can't. He should have been happy with what gave him success. He got greedy and now I hope he loses it all.

Crude is someone like George Carlin who makes observations but doesn’t cross the line into insulting behavior. Then there’s just plain straight sound slander that Perez does that shouldn’t have any place in this world. What’s bias and one sided are these Perez Hilton fanatics who jump to his side even after all he has done in the past few days. Calling someone a faggot, insulting someone’s legacy and claiming they fake a heart attacks is by no means acceptable by anyone’s standards. I want point out the fact that what Jackson pulled in 1995 during his dangerous tour looked serious but was nothing as life threatening as heart failure. I told this to someone before and I will tell it to you. MJ obviously did a lot of questionable things and I don’t condone that, but to fake something as serious as going into cardiac arrest, you either have to be really sick and twisted, or a very convincing actor. And I don’t think MJ is that twisted to joke about going into cardiac arrest. Especially since the paramedics approached his door and said “He’s not breathing.” I mean you can only hold your breath for so long.
SECOND of all, Jackson’s death is irrelevant. That’s NOT what we are arguing. We are arguing about his two faced idiocy. Acting like the pompous ass that he is and then acting all somber afterwards. This was the same man who was totally anti prop 8 and then all of a sudden threw whatever good work he did down the toilet and attacked GLAAD, the same group that was responsible for his foot into the Hollywood lime light.
Third, no one here is trying to denounce or soft play MJ‘s trouble past. We are all aware of what he has become in recent years and the shots people took at him. What this is about is some man who has the audacity to insult someone else’s legacy and then at the drop of a hat tries to play damage control and act all somber. I would have more respect for Perez Hilton if he were to just apologize for making that post.
And you can’t denounce the GOOD things MJ has done. It doesn’t cover up the fact that yeah he did have a troubled life and what not, but to ignore his good deeds and his philanthropy would be silly. Just like your statement.

But I think just like journalists, each blogger will make a name for themselves depending on the relevancy and accuracy of their postings.
I don't think Perez's actions should be extrapolated to the entire blogging community. Prior to this incident Perez was still considered a Glogger (gossip blogger), and therefore on a scale of trustworthiness and "reporting," would not be put in a similar category as say, for example,...you.
With any reporting mechanism there are people who will take advantage of the tool, but it is up to our online community to continue to uphold the quality of our output.
I believe social media won't take any sort of "hit" from Perez's actions, but more than likely, grow as a forum of communication, a way to weed out those who produce faulty information and create an avenue for multimedia news distribution.

I think the point here is that Perez routinely mouths off without so much as a second of forethought about the consequences of what he spews. A little self-reflection and consideration of the possibility that neither he (nor, anyone) knows EVERYTHING would go a long way towards restoring what ever is left of his credibility (if he ever had any to begin with).
The rush to get on top of a story, get the scoop and to be the first in the blogosphere to make a comment about an event before all the facts are in is what leads to the dissemination of misinformation and tarnished reputations. Is that all that blogging is -- the freedom to give in to knee jerk reactions and transmit emotionally fueled slander and falsehoods? I think blogging is much, much more, and Perez needs to step up his game if he wants to continue being relevant (if he ever really was).
And, to all those who call Perez 'a comedic blogger/gossip columnist entertainer', I say: are you SURE that's his intent? If so, well, we should all be laughing. If we're not laughing, the joke is lost, he's not funny, and he needs new material.

Alot of people are still missing the point after a week of this Hilton garbage. This is not a gay vs straight thing, a race thing or even freedom of speech thing. It is about greed for advertising dollars and his willingness to exploit the total disregard he has for the people he shares the planet with. This is evident by his attempt to associate his brand with the biggest breaking news story in the comming weeks. He wears being the most hated site in hollywood like a badge of honor and this just plays into it. The danger is that people will be curious like I was having never heard of him until he associated his name with a real celeb which generates him traffic. I am not tech savy enough but someone should rebroadcast his crap just to drive traffic away from him and to and to have a place to educate people about him when they view the various social networking outlets and sites with "your comment" areas on them. He will have his damage control robots posting defense for him but when it all comes down to it there is a way to elicit strongly motivated action against him without playing into his desire for creating controversy for the sake of traffic. Post, repost, tweet, retweet and tweet again a real actionable plan to rid ourselves of this type of money for nothing trash in a time where we have homeless families living in tent cities. I was as shocked and even saddened by MJ's death as anyone else who grew up listening to him. But lets put things into perspective about Perez Hilton here. He's made a name of being a bitchy gossip blogger. He did exactly what he ALWAYS does. I doubt anyone would be upset about his "coverage" had MJ not passed away shortly after Perez's blog post. People following his twitter feed would also know that as soon as he realized MJ's medical status was indeed serious, Perez was all about praying for MJ. When MJ's death was confirmed, he was all about people respecting the privacy of MJ's kids.
Please don't mistake this for defense, because I don't see anything to defend, but there will always be hatters and mean spirited gossip columnists/bloggers and comedians. We really need to learn not to be offended by every little thing. Get over it.

Admittedly he is part of the "new media" but he has to take a standard "old media" rule or two with him, as does anyone else - if you are reporting news, you cannot be part of it. PH is too wrapped up in being seen and photo'd with celeb's. If you are writing about them you can't party with them or be their "best" friend - at least publicly! His behavior over the past week seems to indicate that the PH fans grew to love is quickly disappearing in the heady haze of his "fame." i'm a proponent of social media, i know its strengths. people like perez hilton make both new media and old media look worthless, but (in both cases) only momentarily until either form of journalism offer something of importance to the public. rush limbaugh looks just as bad every day, and i think he's still technically "mainstream."

I'm not a fan of Perez Hilton, but it's probably only fair to cut him a little slack. Jackson DID have a history of pretty outrageous publicity stunts, as well as a history of suddenly becoming ill when faced with stressful situations. (I'm not saying he faked illness, mind you - but whether fake or legit, it was a normal reaction to stress for Jackson. Anyone remember him showing up for court in his pajamas?)
But nobody reads Hilton's blog for a fair and balanced look at news. They read it for celebrity gossip and a first look at all the dirt. When the object of the game is to be the first with the report, we shouldn't be surprised when those reports are less than accurate.

Perez Hilton is a totally despicable person, and a horrid blogger. 99.5% of what he posts is half-truths and the rest is some bullshit that he makes up and adds in and claims as facts. He bullies celebrities on his site. There's being a celeb and gossip blogger, and then there's being a giant sack of disgusting filth. I don't condone violence, but that punch he got was long, long overdue, and quite honestly, I'm totally surprised it hasn't happened more often.
Ignoring him will not make him go away, what will have an effect on him is to contact every single one of the advertisers on his site and tell them that you will boycott them and all of their products if they continue to advertise with him. Hit him where it hurts, his wallet. Oh my Goodness I can't take this cr**p no more. When will you people look at the evidence - it is not hard! Just because someone accuses you of something does not make you innocent - yes? Just because a court lets you off - that does not mean you're innocent either so neither argument can be used to prove MJ's innocence but the FACTS CAN! The media frenzy surrounding the first allegation made MJ's legal team and Insurance company think it was impossible for any Jury to return a fair verdict at the time which is why they forced Michael Jackson to settle out of court. He did not want to at first, he wanted to fight the allegations but even the court was against him by allowing a 'civil' suit to go ahead before the criminal one. As all of us 'educated' people know, the burden of proof in a 'criminal' case lies on the prosecution but that is not the case in a civil suit. The burden of proof required in a civil suit requires that the plaintiff (the accuser) prove their version of the facts is “more than likely” to be true. This burden of proof varies greatly from the one required in a criminal case. If the civil suit was allowed to go ahead, then only a majority of the jury need believe the allegations and Michael would have lost. Given the biased reporting of the media, it would have been extremely difficult to find a jury that was not affected by it. In hindsight it would have been better for Michael to go to court, he would have won, but given the situation at the time and the apparent willingness of the court to go against Michael, he was forced to accept the recommendations. It was already affecting his health (as it would anyone). That is the only reason the Insurance company decided to settle - it was not Michael's decision as people tend to think. The second time around Michael was not going to give up so easily. He took it to court, presented his defence and it was easy to see his innocence - the liers were so transparent it was not hard to see their true motives. The court saw it, the jury saw it and while the verdict was being announced "INNOCENT" which is the perfect word to describe Michael, at that moment, the media had already decided that he was definitely going to get a guilty verdict. I remember watching an American news channel at the time and a female journalist was making a bet that Michael would be "GUILTY". I am sure she was sacked that day. It is not the MJ fans that should irritate, it is the ignorance that always seems to be a characteristic of the anti-Michael comments. I have yet to see one that is legitimately backed by facts. If you are interested in learning about the truth, read Redemption by Geraldine Hughes and The Michael Jackson Conspiracy by Aphrodite Jones. At least read them as well as the garbage you are reading now and judge for yourself. By the way, that documentary, Michael Jackson "What Really Happened" if full of crap that is easily disproved.

As far as "damaging" the blog and social media community goes, the social media world takes hemselves way too seriously. The world outside of social media does not regard social media with a whiff a credibility about things reported through it. We know that it is only the ravings of anyone with a kbd and an internet connection. (myself included) Nothing more. Sure, Mashable is at a magazine like quality but social media and blogging on the whole is nothing more than rumor mill and punditry for whatever cause the writer desires to push.
I was trying to research jQuery for a presentation this past week and all that came up was blog after frickin' blog. I had to wade through crazed jQuery fan agendas to find the considerably fewer sincere articles. I found it alarming that there were no actual publications being returned with my Google searches. Everyone's voice has only created "white noise" that cannot be trusted. The barrier to entry of the publishing world has been all but removed. That has not increase quality. It has only increased volume.
Believing that social media is believed to be a respected source is lower than believing Wikipedia is an actual encyclopedia.
Social media is a great tool, but is little more that the world's largest chat room. Where it is amazingly useful is that it provides a snapshot in to where the consciousness of a massive amount of people are at any given moment.
Social networking and blogging are symptomatic of our mindless, entertainment based, consumer culture.

As far as "comedic actions" turning into murderous rage I have to say it really depends on many factors. I think the whole murderous rage thing is a bit dramatic but bullied kids have been known to go on to do bad things because of their concealed pain so you're right there. But I can hardly say ALL kids end up like that. My biases came from the fact that child molesters are the people in this world I hate the most and unfortunately MJ was most likely one of them. After speaking to many people like yourself during this ordeal I have come to realize that not many condone his actions and that they were simply mourning the death of the MJ we knew and loved 20 years ago and not the MJ we were stuck with now.
I shall agree that what PH did was a little distasteful but there was no way he could have guessed that MJ was going to die. I don't think that by putting out an apology on his blog he has made up for his actions completely but at least he is making an attempt to. As far as philanthropy goes that's a very tough call since donating money to charities is never a bad thing but some have done it for the wrong reasons, maybe to look better in the limelight for past actions but I would hope that MJ had enough decency to do it for the right reasons so I won't go there until I know more.

Like I said before, the fact is that MJ had a FALL from grace. He WAS at one time a charitable human being. And even in his later days he still was. It was a shame that he did what he did. First of all, Perez isn't factually wrong - Jackson DID pull a similar stunt in 1995. Don't want people to question your death? Don't fake it and cry "wolf."

I want point out the fact that what Jackson pulled in 1995 during his dangerous tour looked serious but was nothing as life threatening as heart failure. I told this to someone before and I will tell it to you. MJ obviously did a lot of questionable things and I don’t condone that, but to fake something as serious as going into cardiac arrest, you either have to be really sick and twisted, or a very convincing actor. And I don’t think MJ is that twisted to joke about going into cardiac arrest. Especially since the paramedics approached his door and said “He’s not breathing.” I mean you can only hold your breath for so long.

But I think just like journalists, each blogger will make a name for themselves depending on the relevancy and accuracy of their postings.
I don't think Perez's actions should be extrapolated to the entire blogging community. Prior to this incident Perez was still considered a Glogger (gossip blogger), and therefore on a scale of trustworthiness and "reporting," would not be put in a similar category as say, for example,...you.
With any reporting mechanism there are people who will take advantage of the tool, but it is up to our online community to continue to uphold the quality of our output.
I believe social media won't take any sort of "hit" from Perez's actions, but more than likely, grow as a forum of communication, a way to weed out those who produce faulty information and create an avenue for multimedia news distribution.

Insensitivity is the word I've been looking for all night. I don't understand the insensitivity of people trying to make light of MJ's Death. As well as the HUGE headline news that it made? Yeah. How horrible. Again it was just the timing is all. Fact is Michael Jackson WAS a rather potent figure in both a negative AND a positive aspect. Unlike you, some people have the capacity to focus on the good as well as the bad in someone’s life and still manage to give some sympathy towards the departed person and their family. The only one who looks BAD and deserves to look bad is Perez Hilton for his recent defamatory actions.
But if he were to die, it would be ok for people to make fun of him right? Because he didn’t do anything bad. I mean all he did was insult a 16 year old starlet in a constant manner as well as poke fun at the children of the celebrities. Not to mention renege an apology to someone who merely gave her opinion on a panel question as well as use slur words that his community has been fighting to get rid. So if he were to die, then it would be ok to mock his death? Cool…gotcha.

i'm a proponent of social media, i know its strengths. people like perez hilton make both new media and old media look worthless, but (in both cases) only momentarily until either form of journalism offer something of importance to the public. rush limbaugh looks just as bad every day, and i think he's still technically "mainstream."

He stirs things up and does it exceedingly well, and I sometimes enjoy laughing at his take on celebrities (because they deserve to have the piss ripped out of them as hard as possible sometimes). And yes, we laugh at Perez a little bit too, because you can't be 100% sure whether he's being serious or whether he's also taking the piss out of himself. Only he knows that for sure...
Trust me though, Perez Hilton has done NO damage whatsoever to social media or blogging as a media form. I think, generally speaking, people are a bit more discerning than that.
There's being a celeb and gossip blogger, and then there's being a giant sack of disgusting filth.
I don't condone violence, but that punch he got was long, long overdue, and quite honestly, I'm totally surprised it hasn't happened more often.
Ignoring him will not make him go away, what will have an effect on him is to contact every single one of the advertisers on his site and tell them that you will boycott them and all of their products if they continue to advertise with him.
Hit him where it hurts, his wallet.
Rob Thomas had all of his ads pulled off of Hilton's site after a reader emailed All Access over Hilton describing 15 year old Dakota Fanning as a "ho".

If everyone contacted all of his advertisers and asked them to pull their ads because of the offensive content he posts or they will boycott them, he will lose all of his financial backing and possibly be forced to change his ways.
Maybe. It's worth a shot.
I've already emailed the advertisers I saw on there on Friday, and when a new one pops up, I'm going to email them too.
