Mashable - The Social Media Guide: Pay What You Want: World of Goo Pulls a Radiohead

I got it in the last MacHeist bundle. I LOVE it! I would recommend it to anyone and everyone!

It's really not "pulling a Radiohead" anymore Barb. You can find a lot more recent examples.

When considering a good representative example case for something I find it's usually better to pick either the first or the most notable (which is often the same instance) to ensure the audience gets the reference (and the pioneer gets the credit). Definitely agree many have come after but Radiohead was one of the first (and biggest) to popularize the idea in the mainstream.

my roomate bought it for wii, and me and our two house guests were quickly addicted... great game, UI, audio, story, just great overall feel. I'm sad to hear that it was a financial bust.

I think this promotion and the press it's gotten has totally crashed their site.

Got this game at full price for the Wii upon release - to this day, it's still one of my favorites. Once I get the chance I'm actually going to donate more toward them - they definitely deserve it.

    Stupid pirates.

I've never actually heard of this game. I'll probably buy it tho. Considering they've been dealing with a lot of piracy I think I'll pay the full price. Maybe more just as a donation.

Your article: "… developer 2D Boy, who have struggled with a reported 90% piracy rate for the game." (My emphasis.)

Developer quote in article you linked: "We're getting good sales through WiiWare, Steam, and our website. Not going bankrupt just yet!"

So "struggling"? or "good sales"? And your "what have they got to lose?" frames this as an act of desperation — do you have anything to base this on?
  • doctorparadox · 1 month ago
Well, if 10% of people who have the game equates to "good sales," they would be 10x better off financially without the piracy, no? By "struggled" I didn't mean to imply that 2D Boy is in financial peril, just that the high piracy rate for the game is something they've had to deal with (as well as their publisher, who did file for bankruptcy a few months later).

Hmm, reminds me of Smirp.com, a new web service that allows any content creator to sell their content on a pay-as-you-wish basis.

I love World of Goo. Bought it not long after it launched. Got no probs spending $20 on a great game and I dont pirate software as I am a developer myself and I know how I'd feel if people did it to me.

    Great work 2d Boy!

Bought it for the wii at full price through the wiiWare interface.

I might just buy another copy for my Linux machine in support of the developers for such a great game. I might even improve my score using a real mouse.
