Mashable - The Social Media Guide: Palm and Apple Play Cat and Mouse Over iTunes Sync

I think this is just too funny! Get you some Palm! If Microsoft was this uptight about blocking third party companies everyone would scream foul, why should we treat Apple any differently?

You know, I love Apple computers and a lot of the things they make, but they are really anal about stuff like this. They need to be more open to other companies working with their technologies. They have nothing to lose! Okay, so the Palm can sync to iTunes. That's awesome! That's a fantastic feature that no other phone adds. But iTunes still belongs to Apple and that's promotion for them.

Apple is like that friend that you had in middle school who always had to have the best toys and stuff. Then if a friend got something new and better, the other kid would have to up the ante. He would never let anyone else play with his fancy toys though. He would horde them all to himself for no apparent reason. Apple needs to loosen up. iTunes should be easily synced to whatever device people want to use, as opposed to JUST the iPhone. I'm a prime example. I'm a Mac user who owns and loves a G1 (Google phone, HTC Dream).

Good point. This gets more people using iTunes and that can't be a bad thing for Apple.

I really don't understand what is Palm winning pretending to be a different device when the Pre is a ultra nice device, why aren't Palm creating its own music jukebox? Apple can sue Palm for breaking reversing its applications in order to get the syncing.... For me this is a child play from Palm... advertising a feature that belongs to its main rival.... and Apple doesn't hesitate too much to call its lawyers....

I think Palm definitely has more to lose. If I was considering buying a Pre I'd think twice since having iTunes isn't gauranteed. Ultimately this cat and mouse game will make for a bad user experience for Pre owners. I know when I spend money on gadets I expect them to work.

Apple can afford to fight off Palm longer than Palm can afford to keep up. They might just keep it up just to keep Palm on their toes.

The only thing I can see stopping Apple would be some sort of antitrust threat.

It sometimes astonishes me how people get upset about this behaviour from Apple... I mean, there are perfectly good ways for Palm to have this feature in a legal, or at list non-dodgy fashion:
    - iTunes has an open plugin API, which Palm could use for syncs.
    - Palm can deal with Apple to have exactly the same feature, the way Motorola and other companies have done it. This is even advertised on Apple's site.
    - Palm can easily parse the iTunes library XML file to offer exactly the same feature.

Why they're taking what's possibly the most technically complex and legally borderline approach to the issue is beyond me...

I think Apple will give up first, because updating back and forth, essentially bickering, isn't in-line with the "image" they want to present to the market. They'll just act as if it's below their level of acknowledgment.

If Apple sues Palm and loses they just don’t lose to Palm, they lose to everyone.
