Mashable - The Social Media Guide: Official BlackBerry Twitter App Coming?

  • madmariner · 2 months ago
I would look at it, but it would have to be good to beat out UberTwitter, which has gotten better (and less battery-hungry) with each revision. I won't switch just because it's the 'official' app.

As for those who bemoan the ads on UberTwitter, it's one or two in your stream and very easy to ignore - get over it, and be happy that they can make a buck or two from their efforts in building what is to date the gold standard in BB Twitter apps. If a few ads means they can continue to improve it, I'm all for it.

I've been waiting for this to happen for ages!
Don't know if I'll switch from ubertwitter straight away though, it will probably take a few revisions to get it right.
Look at the facebook app, it was very basic at first, the only difference being there was no alternative.

    Yes, definitely.

i will not switch..i will probably use both...

If it's easy to use and setup, yes, I'd switch.

Depending if the official Blackberry app has some real functionality that you would expect with things like Seesmic Desktop or Tweetdeck but for the Blackberry, I would switch, but for the most part, I'm happy with Twitterberry. Haven't used UberTwitter and don't think I would with all the ads on it. Twitterberry is simplistic and easy to use.

i will not switch..i will probably use both...

A native Blackberry app would have to be better/more convenient to use than UberTwitter, which I currently use and LOVE. If BB Messenger is any indication (which I don't think stands up to other mobile IM apps), I'm not expecting to see any improvements over the existing Twitter clients for the BB.
  • sharawadgis · 2 months ago
I'd switch, especially if ties into the camera, too. Especially given Brizzly's in-screen picture capabilities, Twitter could become much more visual.
  • Joel · 2 months ago
I used Ubertwitter for a short time, then upgraded and it never worked right after that. So I'd try the BB official version.
  • Scott Johnson · 2 months ago
I'd try it out, but I doubt its first release will best UberTwitter.
  • sawgrass · 2 months ago
i'll try it. not switch til there is a reason.
  • snappy316 · 2 months ago
I totally would! I don't use any other 3rd party apps, I just use the mobile website version...if it had push notifications, I would love it even more.
  • Thegourmetgirl · 2 months ago
It's got to be better than what I'm currently using. There have been so many discussions, outside the techno groups, with respect to poor apps for the Blackberry. I look forward to hearing more about it and have shared your link with our 6000+ fans.
Thanks Mash....for keeping us up to date!

It has to be better than what I'm currently using. Many of us in the world of food and wine have been discussing our current apps with disgust.
Thanks Mash..for keeping us informed. I have shared this link with our 6000+ fans.

On my BB I run Uebertwitter; it drains my battery in a matter of a few hours. It also locks-up my BB on a fairly regular basis. I would hope that an official app wouls alleviate these issues.

If it allows to manage multiple accounts then yes.
  • russpeterson · 2 months ago

I will switch right away, all of the existing applications lack something or are problematic. UberTwitter and its ads, TwitterBerry and its freezing, etc.
  • Jon · 2 months ago
    yes
  • Carol Lee · 2 months ago
Love the features of Ubertwitter. My Blackberry Bold needs better battery support for using any Twitter app tho and new software. Has a few bugs... would definitely like to see what RIM can do too! :D
  • Adam Vesnaver · 2 months ago
Anything is better than the current available apps.
  • RJSilva · 2 months ago
I'm a huge Über Twitter fan but would consider switching if the RIM app comes with support for groups.
  • powerfeedback · 2 months ago
I would definitely check it out, but, it will have to much better than SocialScopeLite, which I have come to really like a lot.
  • andrewfergusson · 2 months ago
Would I switch? In a heartbeat. Ubertwitter is cluttered, and clunky. I have yet to try SocialScope since it's not out of private beta. Twitterberry got be through the first little while, but can't keep up the times. And TweetCaster has really good video marketing, but isn't quite polished to be able to live up to its promises.

The one feature promised by this rumour which will blow all the other BB Twitter clients out of the water is BIS-B Pushing. Never having to refresh, always having the most current tweets at hand. Not being concerned about API access -- since no twitter client is good enough to give up on a desktop client -- will make an official BB twitter client the clear winner.

    Bring on BB Twitter!

Maybe..I love ubertwitter & had no problem forking over $5 to get rid of the ads so I havent had any issues lately with it.
  • Jaime · 2 months ago
I'd definitely use it- twitterberry was always full of bugs and ubertwitter-though it didn't have as many bugs as twitterberry- was PROMPTLY uninstalled once they added the ads- can't wait!
  • Brad Parler · 2 months ago
I'm not sure that I'd remove UberTwitter - but do look forward to Push for DMs and Mentions...
  • Nadia · 2 months ago
I hope they spent some good time with the UI design!
  • Sherylcat · 2 months ago
Tried Twitterberry and it locked up all the time and gave up. Got an invite from Social Scope and expected to love it, but it was just OK and intermingled with Facebook and the facebook part was beyond terrible, so uninstalled it.

I really like UberTwitter and the very few ads don't really bother me - and glad they can make money without charging me. I can't imagine that some still only use the mobile website - that's just lazy or they really don't tweet much. The app would have to be better to switch, so we'll see. Or if it will let you have more than one account as I have one personal account and one for work.

i like Twitterberry so I'd have to see what kind of interface RIM offered.

I have a question for you: is there a free PDF reader out there?
  • rajagiri4 · 2 months ago
it should be better than what i'm currently using.

  • Conrad Theart · 2 months ago
Well I'm loving what SocialScope offers at the moment, so it will depend. If the BlackBerry app is better, for sure I'll switch.
  • bograma · 2 months ago
It's directly linked to how good the app will be.I don't care who makes it.
  • advocatus · 2 months ago
I'm really looking forward to this!
I've downloaded a few Twitter applications, and I didn't like them.
  • nengard · 2 months ago
I haven't found an option that works great on my blackberry - so I'd totally give it a whirl!!
  • Wolfman-K · 2 months ago
If it integrated with the built in alerts system specifically for things like @reply's and mentions. I'd switch.
  • LareenStrong · 2 months ago
I am pretty happy with UberTwitter and didn't mind paying the $5 to get rid of the ads. The RIM Twitter app would have to offer something substantially better to get me to switch.
  • Santosh · 2 months ago
I feel everything happens very slowly for Blackberry. Let them come out a twitter apps first. I am yet to see Skype developing apps for Blackberry. It was supposed to come in May 2009. I am still waiting.
  • Elizabeth K. Barone · 2 months ago
I use and love TwitterBerry, but an official app would be AWESOME!
  • Marc · 2 months ago
what BlackBerry devices do you use? what's the best client for Storm?
  • Dimple Thakkar · 2 months ago
    Thank the Internets Gods!!!
  • RBeale · 2 months ago
As a long time blackberry user and UberTwitter advocate, it will take something extraordinary for me to consider changing over to an "official RIM Blackberry for Twitter App." I have used Twitterberry and UberTwitter thus far and UberTwitter has everything that i need in a mobile Twitter App.
