Mashable - The Social Media Guide: Ochocinco on iPhone: Twitter’s Loudest NFL Star Launches App

  • JohnAtkinson · 1 month ago
Love him or hate him - Chad's a smart marketer who knows how to get attention.

What's really interesting is that after Bengals games he's been inviting people here in Cincinnati to impromptu meetups at bars & restaurants via Twitter (& picking up the tab).

Next time he announces a flash meetup, let me know if Mashable needs a "foreign correspondent" & I'll cover it live ;)

The app itself I can do without, but the fact that he flies fans out to games and puts them up provides a hotel, rental car, food, signed jersey, helmet, etc. is pretty cool. While it may be self-serving, it's still a cool thing to do.

Brilliant move...it's all about brand building (and a splash of ego)

This gets approved by Steve Jobs but Trillians app is still awaiting approval after two months. Stranglehold it what it is...

When I heard about it, I thought it would be free or at least .99. But 4.99 for it? Too much in my opinion. Just read his Twitter and you'll get all the Ochocinco you'll need.

I've spent more on a stupid foam finger. If I was a Bengals fan I would have no problem getting this app.

Same here. I spend more than that on Starbucks (Dutch Bros. Actually) every morning.

Mark sanchez was the first one out with his own app and by the same company. One of the owners is backup QB Jesse Palmer, brother of Carson. Ocho should get his facts straight.
  • ladridi · 3 weeks ago
Jesse Palmer is not the brother of Carson Palmer. Carson's brother, the Bengals backup QB, is named Jordan Palmer. Perhaps you should stop watching so much of The Bachelor. And perhaps it is you who should get your facts straight.

Are celebrity (or wannabe) ego-apps the wave of the future? This isn't directed at T Pain, Ochocinco or anyone else in particular, but I hope it's not the next "big thing."
  • barringtonarch · 1 month ago
they should have released it for free, great brand building move tho.

Yeah..there is such a thing as too much Chad Johnson. No way would I pay for that when I can get it for free on the Cincy news. I love all your posts. Thanks for the great stuff!

He has taken his narcissism to the next level.
As for other athletes there is a livestrong app which is part of lances brand, but not necessarily his app.

Say what you will about Chad Johns...er, Ochocinco, the guy is a master of self-promotion, and someone marketers like myself can learn from. Sure, he's self-indulgent, much more so than I would suggest any client be, but it fits his brand. More importantly, he is demonstrating how to embrace social media and conventional media and make it always work for him.

As for the iPhone app, it doesn't sound like it's anything special. But just the idea of an individual having their own app is ground-breaking. How soon will other celebrities, politicians, etc., have their own app? How soon will regular people have them?

$5 is a little absurd for the ocho cinco app. agree with earlier posters- maybe wouldve gone for it if it had been $.99 at most, but passing. i can get the absurdity of ocho on twitter.
  • jbcarey · 1 month ago
5$ is too much.... and they need to accept other apps FIRST.
  • Steven Rossi · 1 month ago
Maybe arrogant, but still pretty cool.
  • whodey · 1 month ago
Dumbest crap I've ever seen. Ocho needs to concentrate more on holding onto the damn ball and backing up the crap he talks. He's nothing but a self promoted, overrated loud mouth.

fu. hes making plays when it counts let him do his thing!
  • legalanswersguy · 1 month ago
It would be different if he were actually good. Maybe, he needs to worry about catching footballs. What a loser.

Actually... Chris Bosh (of the Toronto Raptors) was the first professional athlete with an iPhone app. His launched last April. Check it out in the App Store.

If I only have to pay $2.99 to sound like T-Pain and I have to pay $4.99 to get Ochocinco videos and stats...then I'm gonna save $2 and keep singing I'm on a Boat.

Here's a funny "preview" of some of the features on the Ap.

I posted earlier that Mark Sanchez had an iPhone app out before Ochocinco launched his app. The Sanchez app is no longer available. Read the details here: http://jetstwit.com/2009/10/15/ochocinco-i-am-t...
