Mashable - The Social Media Guide: Obama’s Nobel Peace Prize: 69% of Twitter Users Don’t Get It

  • larrythewineguy · 2 months ago
Anything that pisses off Fox News is worthwhile. And even if Obama didn't deserve the prize, he doesn't deserve the treatment that Fox News gives him either.
  • Bike Yoga · 2 months ago
@larry, i'm with ya! let's see the hissy fit!

i was surprised by the award (& i'm an Obama fan) but the more i thought about it more interesting & intelligent the Nobel committee appears to me: it isn't so much about what he's done (though i don't think he gets the credit for what he's done).

I think the Nobel committee gave Obama this award to push the world (& probably Obama) towards those ideals which Obama's election symbolizes; to give momentum to that historical movement that put Obama in power. And that's a pretty power push. Hopefully it happens & Obama keeps his promises.

in which case, they will look like geniuses. if not, they'll look like goats.

@joebrooks: sorry, but you're either delusional or full of it. you & i & everyone knows Faux News has a bias. i don't like it but it's their right to have it. but let's not lie about that either. & yes, you're lying to either everyone here or yourself.

and it's a shame b/c even if conservatives have a legitimate point, it can't be taken seriously (except by conservatives) b/c they've lied wolf so often. we really do need a strong, STABLE opposition & we don't have one.

you guys would do better if you weren't so extreme.

@adam (author), "69% of Twitter'" isn't accurate. anyone who's done any study of polling knows this #'s inaccurate, the internet's a poor polling station, and that the question & answers skew responses.

it's called push polling. Obama was never on my radar but that poll isn't on target either.

How dare there be a network that questions the President and his policies!
  • sunil · 1 month ago
who the hell is this president ?? still dancing to the tune of many!!
  • larrythewineguy · 2 months ago
Questioning the president and his policies is fine and also necessary. But to deliberately set out to undermine him in everything he does is pathetic and harmful to the country. And yes, the left does it too, though Fox brings it to new heights (or depths).
  • Infidelesto · 2 months ago
Are you kidding? Every other network, major newspaper and magazine are in the tank for Obama and are actively working to deceive the American Public in order to protect Obama from his radical policies.
  • harrytheelitistguy · 2 months ago
    He hasn't done anything.
  • joebrooks · 2 months ago
That's just absurd. So for the sake of Obama they should just sit on stories that *might* change the minds of some people regarding the direction Obama is taking our country? Just the for the sake Obama's image?

    That's such a joke.

I prefer it when journalists do their job regardless of which political party is in the office instead of relying on the 1 right-leaning organization.

You think everyone should just leave Obama to do what ever he likes?

Haven't you American's ever heard of proper debate and discussion?

Come to Britain and you will see REAL politics. Your politicians would probably die of shock.

Oh and why on earth would you watch Fox News anyway? It's like the kind of programme we have on Kid's channels here. It's so dumbed down it's unbelievable!
  • Haumea · 2 months ago
Probably because they actually report stories that the rest of the media attempts to hide because it would hurt their idol's politically.
  • Serena Chen · 1 month ago
I'm all for reporting the truth, no matter what it does to a person's image, but Fox News bends truth so much it's ridiculous. Evidence: http://1pgw.sl.pt

  • mentoce · 1 month ago
We sure have heard of "proper debate and discussion" as you put it and I guarantee you that if our politicians would assuredly die if they were to visit Britain, then there would be no hesitation to send them over there as quickly as English food makes me vomit (I assure you that that span of time can only be measured in milliseconds!).

As for me, I prefer not to watch a bunch of old, overweight, stodgy white men wearing wigs and gowns argue over whose penis is smaller. They should all know the answer to that by now, which is it doesn't matter because all British women are fat, ugly, pasty hags who aren't worth their own rat semen.

See, now you've experienced a good 'ole fashioned American debate. Brits just don't understand American politics because they like to keep it civil (except when those cross dressing poseurs start slapping each other). We (Americans) just make personal attacks.

  • stephen · 2 months ago
I'm a middle class American, I'm not poor. Only middle class Americans that are now poor are ones who purchased homes and vehicles when they weren't in the financial position to afford them. This because Clinton loosened the laws on the mortgage companies and who they can accept to give credit to. That's econ 101. Common sense prevails friend. Besides, my respect was lost for the Nobel Peace Prize, not president Obama. Get a grip on what you're referencing to as it had no pertinence to my post.
  • stephen · 2 months ago
    Another note to add:
A true middle class family would be in the financial position to now make investments on properties (foreclosures, quick sales, etc) and be able to gain huge equity and further their financial stance when the economy turns around. Please read an econ book. That way, the next time you make a snide comment you'll at least make an educated one.

It's not ours to "get". They can give the award to whomever they choose, based on whatever criteria they choose to measure it. Obviously, they think he represents an ideal of diplomacy and peace. Doesn't matter if "we" feel it's premature or that he "deserves" it.
  • Shanx · 1 month ago
Agree. But one has to wonder about an award policy that rewarded Yassir Arafat, Khomeini, and Carter, and had also shortlisted Hitler at one point fyi, just did not have anything in their mind to reward Gandhi. Hmm.

  • Shanx · 1 month ago

Sounds to me like a lot of people need to snap out of it.

Which would make the poll a fairly good guess of the general Twitter population.

  • Jaym Esch · 2 months ago
It's just another clear sign of how uninformed people are when it comes to so many issues in life. You're talking about people on Twitter- the same people who I had to spend three hours last night explaining 3rd grade science to in order to assure them the ROCKET SCIENTISTS at NASA do, in fact, know more then them, and were not going to "blow up the moon". Our school systems suck at science, they suck at math, and they obviously suck at any kind of valid political education.

Bush's actions dictated why he is one of the top three worst Presidents the U.S. has ever known. President Obama's actions have show why he is bound to be one of our best- barring the ever-constant blocks from the "party of No" on the "right". The same "right", that in the last week has CHEERED America losing the Olympics (and the billions in revenue that would have brought our economy) and BOOED our President receiving global honors for his efforts in trying to restore sanity and civility to the world.

This is a repudiation of everything the hate-filled, propagandist "right" believes in. There is a reason NO ONE celebrated the "re-election" of Bush worldwide, and a very clear and understandable reason people the world over were dancing in the streets upon President Obama's election night landslide mandate.

This prize is a reward for America getting back on the right track- for going with someone who has the intelligence to say, "Let's talk" instead of "You're either with us, or against us."

In every case, you're going to respect the former and shake your head in pity at the latter.

America should NEVER have been on the road Bush took us down, and we're experiencing the damages of his policies right now- thankfully the policies and actions President Obama have taken are working and every expert worth a lick in the world, agrees they are working.

The only naysayers? The xenophobic, hate-filled, bigoted, sexist, homophobic, propaganda-pushing extremists on the "right". Which is why they currently hold the lowest statistical rating any party has ever had in our nation.

What's President Obama done- in only 9 months?
bit.ly/2A48b (and that's only a glimpse- the stimulus is working, the market is back on track, every economic indicator - and jobs are not one as they lag too far behind - is positive.)

The problem with Twitter is, you give a bunch of people who should never have access to a public soapbox the ability to spew nonsense, and other people who are incapable of knowing any better eat it up to fill the empty voids in their brain- and they believe it.
  • Maggs30 · 1 month ago
You are obviously an idiot. http://www.usnews.com/listings/worst-presidents... Bush is not even in the top 10 of worst Presidents. Do research before you look even stupider in future posts please.

    http://images.businessweek.com/ss/08/07/0731_ol...

There is no revenue from the hosting the Olympics when it costs roughly $20 Billion to host them at tax payer expense.

And none of Obama's "accomplishments" that you list....which by the way with an unemployed rate of almost 10 percent the economy is not recovering....have anything to do with World Peace. Obama had been in office 10 days when he was nominated. He had done NOTHING and still has not ended either war, closed Gitmo, or signed any Peace Treaties.

Now idiot go do some research and actually learn something before you blame your stupidity on Bush too.
  • Serena Chen · 1 month ago
    1. Calling someone an idiot on then internet when they're obviously making valid arguments just makes yourself look like an idiot. Unless they're spellin thar commentz leik dis!1!!!11, of course.

    2. Good research gathers information across a range of different sources. "Top 10" lists are especially prone to bias, as they try to quantify actions and order them, when in real life, the "goodness" or "badness" of a set of actions are extremely subjective.

    3. Looking at the collective comments on this thread and many others, it seems that mostly people are unhappy because nothing much has happened, and nothing much has changed. What everyone is not seeing, however, is that one man cannot change a whole country. People have to realise that it takes a whole country of people individually taking responsibility for the change and actively changing themselves to bring about change on the large scale.
  • Maggs30 · 1 month ago
    1. He would not be called an idiot if he did not try to make himself look so superior to the rest of the posters on Twitter in general. For that I am sorry but he clearly is an idiot.

    2. There are no Top 3 lists or even top 10 lists of US Presidents that list Bush Jr anywhere near number 3, neither one of you have obviously been alive long enough to even understand some of the ones we have had in office.

    3. He was given an award that he did not deserve. Other nominations for the award did not need an entire country to "back" them up to make changes so why shoul it be any different for Obama? Now the US has to back him up to help him deserve the award? I don't think so!
  • Maggs30 · 1 month ago
Oh and just to make sure it is clear a blog does not count as a valid news source to show that Bush is in the worst three as you know as well as I do that a blog holds no what as does the actual news source I listed.

And no none of his arguments are valid as the information he posted has nothing to do with a valid reason to win the award.
  • maritam · 2 months ago
Let's keep in mind that the Nobel Peace Prize is not given to someone for balancing the budget, or fixing the economy. Obama has already inspired millions of people all over the globe - what other person has been able to do that recently? He may not have had many measurable accomplishments yet, but his positive influence on people all over the world, rich and poor, is undeniable.

Also, what's so bad about the Europeans getting all excited about our president? :)
  • greasyguide · 2 months ago
The US does not make up the WHOLE World. As many people who want to diss Obama...have you looked at yourself and asked "what have I done for my community lately." And if you have no answer then you need to just shut it.
  • Richard · 2 months ago
Perhaps the problem is that 69% of Twitter users don't understand what horrific damage his predecessor did for America's image in the rest of the world. Obama has already taken massive strides towards fixing that. If that's not worthy of an award, I don't know what is.
  • Sean · 2 months ago
Headline should not that 69% of Tweets are from teenage girls who don't know WHAT a Nobel Prize is!
  • Name · 2 months ago
Number of tweets is not necessarily the same as the number of users tweeting. It's possible that some people (lots, by my twitterfeed) are tweeting multiple messages saying the same thing. The headline should be "69% of tweets express not getting it".

Could all come out in the wash if similar amount of people on either side are multi-tweeting. But seems like the headline should accurately reflect what the data is trying to represent.
  • Guest · 2 months ago
well most of Obama's supporters poor and waiting in line for a free hand out... which could be the reason the tweets are low because those people don't have access to internet or computers

I can attest to what Mashable is saying. I've been watching the feeds this morning because I was blown away that he received the prize myself. People simply are confused at best why someone has won when they have barely had any chance at all to do anything and the things they have been doing have not made much head-way at all (Healthcare reform for example). I don't make many political statements and I do not want this to be seen as such but the fact remains it seems a bit sketchy for him to win this out of the blue if you will. Simply makes the prize seem fake especially considering the previous winners and their amazing contributions to society.
  • brian fanslau fan · 1 month ago

The response breaks down into two categories:

If you unconditionally love peace, then you're against it.
If you unconditionally love Obama, then you're for it.

In this case, Twitter is representative... When the Huffington Post says "WTF" to this, you can tell there's something very odd about it.

This cheapens the prize and makes it about as meaningful as dropping a deuce. Well, no... now that I think about it... that's more meaningful. I like Obama. I think he's a good guy and all. I just don't think he's done anything at all that would even be worthy of voter praise as yet, let alone a damn Nobel prize.

I was seriously shocked when I read this.

Obama has great potential for this award in the future..... I think it's way too premature!

Many in the world are still waiting for Mahatma Gandhi to receive this recognition still.... big differences. Gandhi inspired not only the movements in India, but Martin Luther King and Nelson Madela aswell... Great ideas, and BIG change that took a couple of decades.

Obama... nominated after two weeks of being president??? It makes no sense....

So in that sense it is worthless, but remember don't disagree or be negative about Pres. Obama as if you do you are racist...
  • Aerocles · 2 months ago
Actually, I did a poll on my blog that got pretty similar results. About 2/3 or 66 percent or respondents thought he did not deserve to win the Nobel Peace Prize - see results: http://ow.ly/tDnd
  • fdsa · 1 month ago
Just because you got three votes on your blog that doesn't mean that you should brag about it.
  • Aerocles · 1 month ago
103 and counting actually. what happened? are you jealous & bitter because no one reads your blog? there's a difference between bragging and informing...get a life dude

Why would I waste my time with a blog and trying to pump up my ego by bragging about how many readers I have when making comments on crappy websites is truly more satisfying?

Foxsnooze…UGH!!! When are people going to open their eyes and realize that we all are losing Republicans, Democrats, Independents, liberals, begets, conservatives, white, black, yellow, green, male ,female….. Lets make this easy AMERICANS!!!! The damage is done. Prize or no prize….

You don't seem to understand that Twitter is dominated by right-wing idiots and therefore anything related to Obama is going to be overwhelmingly negative. Fortunately, this America-hating treason-spewing trash is a minority in this country, despite being a majority on Twitter.
  • Serena Chen · 1 month ago
That's an interesting comment - I'd like to see @mashable hold a poll to see where Twitter leans, politically.
  • kay87 · 1 month ago
What a stupid idiot. you really think that whether people think he deserves it or not is determined by their political party? Oh yeah those jealous republicans they just want to bring down a man's hard work.
  • Andrew · 2 months ago
It's such a joke. What has Obama done to achieve peace? One explanation I've heard is that this is to encourage him to strengthen his efforts in diplomacy and peace-making. If that's true, maybe I should be awarded the world cup to get me back to playing soccer.

    Ridiculous...
  • christomalty · 2 months ago
    Um, we don't *get* it?

I'd say that the 31% doesn't really get it.

I have nothing against Obama, except I'm afraid of the hysteria that surrounds him. Including this. I would think the world of it if he turned it down. That said, I can't blame him for accepting it. I might not turn it down either.
  • Joe · 2 months ago
This has got to be a joke, right?

    No?

    WTF!!

This completely undermines the Award. If Obama can get the award then my bloody cat can.
  • Bill Reedy · 2 months ago
What's up with this crap. The Nobel Peace Prize is awarded to those that have accomplished something relating to peace, right? How in the heck can he even accept this without cheapening the entire proccess for selection at this time? President Obama, let's show some leadership qualities by rejecting this award at this time. Accept it if you become a proven leader.
  • greenlawn · 2 months ago
he sure it turning out to be the opposite of what was expected of him yet he gets a nobel peace prize!http://typobounty.com/Funny/Obama_1.htm

Obama turned from an unknown to a world figure in a matter of 1yr. Many fear his sudden popularity, ability to pull a crowd and convince other leaders, so there hide behind insult laden comments.
  • dtow · 2 months ago
They used to go into bars to find out what "ordinary" people thought. Now they go to Twitter and find the same thing -- the "average" person doesn't have a clue! They should call it "Nitwitter". The US is so far behind the rest of the world it is embarrassing: technology, education, health care, mobile phones, TV, the web, AND appreciation for Obama.
  • JeanDeLuca · 2 months ago
Your headline is fascinating. When I first read it, I thought it meant 69% of Twitter users don't understand the award itself. Actually, I guess it does mean that after all. In November I felt like part of the majority for the first time in a long, long time. Back to minority status for me.

He said "I am surprised and deeply humbled ... I do not feel that I deserve the prize... I will accept this award as a call for action " The question is do he real mean what he said in speech after he won the peace prize or is it another ................ How long more do we need to wait till he does????? When will the changes happen ????? No ones knows ??????He need to prove the world he is the one and only President who actually keep promises rather than "saying and doing nothing about it".

I dont really understand what he did either.
Ah who cares pass over a few physicists maybe a couple of doctors and then while we are at it pass over some people who fought for human rights. Nonviolently.
I just lost respect for the Nobel Peace Prize as a prize that is given for doing nothing is worth nothing. Just a worthless piece of metal

I'll admit that I was very upset at Obama winning the election in the first place. On who's radar was Obama on before he even became a nominee?! Bush was hated so much that all someone had to do to win the election was to be the complete opposite of him: black, young, pacifist, and liberal. Sure enough, it worked. Obama talked a great game during to race but my parents always taught me "never trust someone who tells you exactly what you want to hear." Him winning the Nobel Prize is yet another example of how everyone seems to give him way too much credit for simple words, instead of actual works. I for one never bet on a horse till I've seen it race, and I have yet to see him gallop! Obama said during his selection of a supreme court justice that his nominee would not be affected by race or party. Hello, Judge Sotomayer. I'm not really concerned if anyone agrees with me on this site, because I know that people do elsewhere. All of us who think the same way are restricted to sitting on our hands for the next three years. Obama is too popular to impeach for nice speeches and no actions.

Congratulations Mr. President Obama, fine, You have earned the award!!!!! You have done so much for the peace in the world, I hope You a good luck also in the future!!!!
  • ron333wood · 1 month ago
Twitter is the long form for the word "twit" and that applies to a large majority of the people that rail against the President. Obama has done more to advance peace in 8 months than "W" did in eight years...simply because he puts diplomacy before bombs.
  • ron666burgundy · 1 month ago
Just because someone accomplished more in 8 months than the town drunk did in 8 years does not mean that he deserves the friggin Nobel Peace Prize! He's still getting his feet wet and hasn't even accomplished anything tangible.
  • Rants · 1 month ago
Who should have gotten it? I think the Nobel committee chose Obama because there were no other viable candidates, and he has put diplomacy (the only real method of fostering peace) on the forefront again, rather than just bullying other countries like Shrub did.
  • Maggs30 · 1 month ago
There were 172 nominations for the Nobel Peace Prize. There were much more deserving people on that list than Obama.

"Macedonian humanitarian and artist Zivko Popovski-Cvetin was nominated by the Macedonian government, Austrian children's charity SOS-Kinderdorf International was put forward by the Austrian government, American Greg Mortenson was nominated by six members of the U.S. Congress for his Asian school building charity, Vietnamese religious leader Thich Quang Do was put forward when a campaign recruited lawmakers to nominate him, and American musician Pete Seeger also was nominated after a campaign. "

    http://www.newsmax.com/insidecover/sarkozy_obam...

All of these have done so so much more than Obama. They have made the prize into a joke passing up more deserving people like this.
  • Altinkum · 1 month ago
I think Obama himself is really puzzled as to why he got it!
  • dani326 · 1 month ago
Even Obama is surprised and doesn't get it. Some people seem to forget he didn't ask for it. It is flattering that some consider our president to be a man with aspirations to help create peace but again even he doesn't think he deserved it. I personally would rather wait and see if he deserves it in 3 years
  • Steve · 1 month ago
I could see the 31% saying congrats as a way of being nice but still not understanding why he got it for not doing much.

Enthusiastic but humble Obama got the highest recognition what he deserves for. Right from his beginning, he struggled hard for the basic necessities of life, what to speak of getting enrolled in a reputed school or being pampered during his toddler days. He is a born fighter, not in a Gandhian way, but in his own inimitable style.
Those who are criticising him for his war policy, they should remember that Lord Krishna also supported war against demons. I can't say he is a complete man, but he is a thorough gentleman.

it was my impression that the Nobel Peace prize was to be given to someone who had done outstanding work in an effort to achieve lasting peace. I have yet to see exactly what Obama has done for this country other than drive us deeper and deeper into long term debt. Where are the promises of cooperation and transparency? What happened to the promise to listen to the voice of the people? Should one get a prize for making empty promises???
  • Name · 1 month ago
if obama happens to get this prize then hopefully another will get it in 3 months from being the president......... if that's true then here my question arises... IS NOBEL PEACE PRIZE CREDITABLE?

  • niubi · 1 month ago
Ah, Henry Kissinger, the famous peace preaching politician got a Nobel Peace Prize. Does it really matter or have any relevance? I heard that this could be a 'nudge' from the committee to encourage Obama to do all that good work and undo the Bush admin's awfulness. It's hard to look bad when the guy next to you is W, after all! But then again, isn't Obama pressing for more troops in Afghanistan? So how does that fit in with the peace part?

OTOH, it could be the Norwegian government sucking up to Obama in the hope that he'll come and see their fjords and stuff.

Personally, I'd sooner give the Nobel Peace Prize to http://www.dubli.com, but that's just my outlook! :)
  • Rob · 1 month ago
The people that say Obama doesn't deserve the Nobel prize are politically unconscious. Obama dismantled the missile shield in Eastern Europe and relieved tensions throughout the world. The doomsday clock was turned back 2 minutes in the good direction. Efforts with the Iranians are already producing tangible results. Obama's speech at the UN in re: nuclear weapons reductions set the world on a different path and greatly raised awareness throughout the world. The health care for children, the economic recovery act, and countless other actions have greatly contributed to world peace. To say Obama hasn't done anything is a nothing more than a projection of the shame based unconscious of the naysayers.

Seen Both ways. Hasn'tdone any thing to get noble prize. There are plenty of others who are better placed to get the noble. On the other side as an encouragement to do some good things is the rationalizing point indicated by the committee. My suggestions. Give nobel prize to every child so that they are inspired to perform better in future. Politicization of Nobel peace prize or the committee getting corrupt, i cant get it. Why only an US president is given to inspire good work. Why not a third world country leader . They are in more need of inspiration . I know at least 10 people who deserve nobel peace prize. So embarrasing for the entire world.
  • Rants · 1 month ago
Okay, I've had enough :) Obama won because there's nobody else and the panel views him as better than Bush. That's it. There should be no expectation that one, after winning, should do more. That's silly. It's based on the past, not the future.

There are so few candidates for the Peace Prize that he won by default. End of story. Love him, hate him, that's the reason.
  • Maggs30 · 1 month ago
If you actually research it you would see that the were well over 100 possible candidates and he was not the best choice. Look for my post on here with the link. Obama was only in office 10 days before he was nominated. He had not done anything even close to the magnitude that the other candidates for the Award had and he still hasn't. The Nobel Peace Prize is now nothing but a Political Piece of Crap and it is not awarding the most deserving.

What an interesting way to "poll" though. I wonder if the demographic is varied enough to really use it as a reflection of how any certain group (for example, Americans) feels.
