On a $0 advertising budget and desperate to get the Need Help informaiton found on my website to those who are trying to survive the recession, feed their families, find affordable housing as they are losing their homes, or to find the help needed to cope with all the added pressures, any information website is wonderful! My goals are to provide information, help and HOPE! And if all else fails - and owners are considering selling their homes in Short Sales, I've provided a section of the website where they can advertise their property for $1/per listing, for 90 days w/8 photos. We have had over 106,000 hits on our site since Jan. 1st, 2009 - and we are growing! Information is Power - And Hope! I've found so many great venues to advertise my website - and our next step is to put ads on Utube!

Still not a MENTION of the outrage of Ning network creators? Not a mention of the privacy breach? The stealing of member data? Not a word huh?

I founded My Modern Metropolis, a place to share modern day experiences - upcoming events, restaurants, hotels, music and art. Though we don't have a huge amount of members (at the time of this post about 1,650), we get over half a million unique visitors coming to our site each month to see our content.

Using www.CHAT.com.pr, a Puerto Rico social network built on Ning, with close to 40,000 members.

Growing a community with the Ning platform is easy and keeps you competitive with their constant feature improvements.
  • SamosaGuy · 7 months ago
We run http://yosamosa.com on ning. We are sticking with them over group.us because Ning has over $100 million in funds and seem to have a revenue model. We are glad with what we are getting for $30/month.

I took a good look at Ning before we build our site (from scratch in the end) and it's pretty easy to set a social site up. What stopped me moving forward with Ning was that there is little you can do to distinguish yourself in terms of feature functions. We wanted it to do some stuff it couldn't and I felt that would have made us no better than any other business focused social networking site on there.

    Two other things:
    1) They have 1 million sites but how many users spend any time on them? I'd be interested to hear how large the average community is.

    2) Do they yet have support for OpenID or Facebook Connect? Without these at the very least it will make it tough for many of those sites to succeed, as apathy around registration is a big obstacle to people using new sites.

tradetwit.ning.com, still in beta as i'm desperately waiting for a microblogging solution. For the rest, they give excellent feedback although I would appreciate Ning to be somewhat more geek-oriented. 1good point however: all ning sites are iphone-enabled :)
  • Charles Pahud · 7 months ago
tradetwit.ning.com but i'm desperately waiting for a microblogging system. All Ning sites are iphone enabled, that's cool, support is excellent and very quick but i would like to see more features. The fact that Ning still has no microblogging is quite amazing. New release April 20...

I have a network on Ning, http://jimturnersmm.ning.com , my only wish is that they would use Facebook Connect, making it easier for my Facebook friends to join my network. So far, they want no part of partnering with Facebook.

TC says “Because many of its users (particularly network creators) tend to be quite passionate about the sites they’ve built, Ning hasn’t been without its share of controversy, ”

If the NCs would not have been passionate about their sites, NING would not have become such a success, and the reason why these guys are passionate because NING sold them a Dream That they own their site..

    and

NING recently crushed that dream by telling them all those members on different social networks belong to NING and NING has simply used its Network creators… Breach of trust at NING… ! Why didn't any major site report it despite numerous complaints..?

Ning is getting to be like mutual funds. As there are now more mutual funds than there are stocks, Ning is going to have more social networks than there are users.
  • Tom Foale · 7 months ago
Swag - Since there are 10 to the 300 (10 followed by 300 zeroes) non-trivial ways of combining just 1024 people into groups, and this grows exponentially with the number of users, then it follows that there can be many times more social networks than users even if the vast majority of these groupings have no reason to exist. Just think about your own personal social, business and family networks, not to mention the short-lived networks you form every time you trade on Ebay. However, I doubt if people would pay to join many of these networks for their proposed purpose, which is a flaw social networks have yet to overcome.

For those that can't find the features they want on Ning, look at SocialGo.com. It includes the ability to support paid subscription, requires no web knowledge to get up and running and is packed with collaboration features. Great for private clubs, and quite possibly disruptive to basic, non-interactive websites too.
