I still have the old Ebook from RCA and never would give it up before. But this might just swing that in another direction.

I have a Kindle and just love. Whether its inertia or not, I am not attracted to the Sony version. I use my kindle for all my reading. I have my news and magazine subs on it and books that are not on it are rarely bought. You can get a ton of free or really low cost stuff on kindle too. Got the complete works of Dickens for the grand total of .49.

I am really glad there are more ereaders coming out. I definitely like the access to free book found on the Sony model. I just get the feeling that it isn't time yet. I think we will be seeing some price adjustments before the end of the year. At the very least features should go up.

Doesn't do much good for us folks in Canada. No Canadian libraries are included and the wifi version isn't available here yet (just like the Kindle) because Sony doesn't have a Canadian mobile phone partner. I'll stick with my PRS-700 for now.

So the wireless is only over AT&T 3G? There's no wireless access point capability? AT&T 3G Wireless Plans are more expensive that home broadband (and slower) and did Sony learn nothing from the 10,000 negative iPhone on AT&T headlines? If their $400 eReader requires a $40/mo commitment, they can keep it.

hey Chris, in this case the 3G is actually included free -- I updated the post to clarify. thanks!

I have one of the earlier Sony Readers and I picked it specifically because it did NOT have any wireless. I'm still not comfortable with the idea of someone getting into my devices when I'm not looking, since I can't put in firewalls or other protections. I'm glad the library functions will be available for the earlier versions as well. I really enjoy my reader, especially for travel. I hope Sony makes moves to be the inclusive E-book reader.

Why would I pay $399 for a very low tech computer?

Sony is brilliant! I'm buying one! I despise the kindle and Amazon's hardcore DRM ( aka remotely delete your content) lack of control. Bravo! Or...should I say Bravia! LOL!

The readers sounds very exciting although the price might be a little more than expected.

Good to see a new reader, the more the better

just great to see more readers available but the $400 price tag is a little over the top.

As a Kindle (first generation) owner, I am not going to switch. I've been very happy with the Kindle so far and not impressed with the earlier e-book Sony Readers I've seen.

If I were looking at these for the first time, though, Sony's Library feature might sway me. My decision would also depend on the depth of the e-book libraries. I noticed that Sony has a link to Google's million-title public-domain library, so I'd probably pick the Sony over the Kindle.

If there are no ads. If there are ads, you should give the device for free!

I have a Sony Reader 505, got it when it first came out and have used it everyday since! I love it. I love the convenience of always having a book in my purse, I don't have to stuff heavy books in my suitcase when I travel and I like that I could convert the ebooks I'd already bought to read on the Reader. (just needs a third party FREE program online) I did consider the Kindle, but I liked the look and feel of the Sony and the cover make it feel like your holding a light book. I've waited for them to make a reader that I could buy books wirelessly, so I'll probably buy this one or ask for it for Christmas!

As a current Kindle2 user, the Sony looks attractive specifically for the Public Library content. As a NY resident, I can get a NYPL card with an electronic application and depending on the what is actually available, I should be able to get whatever content I choose at no cost. The DRM argument that some are raising in opposition to the Kindle is moot as the ePub and mobi formats are also DRM'd. I will at least look hard at this device once it is available.

I use the earliest Sony ebook reader, and I'm pleased with it. However, I was planning to replace it with a Kindle, as the Kindle has many more features. After reading your story, I think I'll wait for the new Sony - it sounds better to me.

Now I need to get my public library to subscribe to the Overdrive program that the rest of Tennessee has access to.

I have the PRS-505 and I love it. I never leave my house without it. And as much as I love the idea of having a wireless connection to download my books I am sticking with whay I've got, at least until the price on the new Sony comes down. But I will be sticking with Sony for sure.
