Mashable - The Social Media Guide: New CNN.com Goes Live: What Do You Think?

  • The Captain · 1 month ago
Absolutely terrible! One of the worst designs for a news site. The layout forces ones eyes to the larger middle section, which is all video of whatever magazine show cnn is pimping for the day. All the actual "news" content is smaller and to the left of center and not featured al all. To much trying to "personalize", be my friend, and showing me what others think is some "newspulse". It's the kind of site people who "tweet" will love, but the dying breed who actually likes to "read" hard news (or have to at work), rather than watch some PM magazine show will hate. Off to the BBC for good it seems.
  • InSearchOfRealNews · 1 month ago
Sucks. The main news is off to the left in baby size compared to the middle section. Really odd given the 'news' should be the most important. The mid section appears to be a bunch of self promotion crap or people magazine type content and the stuff on the right is ads faking news. For all the news that's fit to print, I'll stick with the New York Times and the news aggregator that Google's news page serves as. (Btw, does anyone feel like I do about Wolfe Blitzer, Campbell Brown, and Anderson Cooper? All 3 make me want to barf)!!

I like it! More ill surely follow suit!
  • Jason from Bim · 1 month ago
with all the red, the site looks very....republican
  • Ralph · 1 month ago
I think the new design missed the mark. Design style is a bit too cluttered for my taste and the presentation seems very old style. The site seems to be a bit of a copy of Yahoo's last redesign, but with more clutter. How about adding some real-time behavior to the site ... what people are reading now.

www.tabup.com a great place to have a conversation.

I love the variety of content and especially the use of video, however, CNN forgot something pretty important--if they want people like me to share their content--they forgot to include "Share this post" links to Twitter, Facebook, YouTube (with so many videos, how could they miss this?). It's not too late for CNN to add this functionality to their site. Hopefully, they will.

P.S. Can't wait to read your CNN blog, Pete. You'll be reaching a somewhat different audience than at Mashable.com, of course, many of whom are hesitant to get into Social Networking. Bravo for CNN hiring the perfect person to enlighten its Web audience.
  • Name · 1 month ago
They have it, it's just too buried. If you roll over a video while playing, there's a share button that provides access to all those networks. But they should make it available outside of the video rollover.
  • TheInfoPreneur · 1 month ago
Definately a move in the right direction, I love the new look. User friendly too

    ditto! thanks cnn!

Nice redesign for Constantly Negative News (CNN).
  • mintzsharma · 1 month ago
Like the look: Cleaner layout, stronger headings, more defined margins. Don't like the ad box in the third column masquerading as a news item.
  • Anthony Bynoe · 1 month ago
If foxnews.com did a redesign, you still be getting the same content
  • clatter · 1 month ago
I could do with less video at most news sites. I want to rip through the news in a few minutes, not spend a vacation with it.
  • redwall_hp · 1 month ago
Agreed. News isn't entertaining, nor should it be. It's something to speed through in the morning then get on with life.
  • abutterflyloves · 1 month ago
    No complaints.. looks good.

looks good but registering doesnt work. click register and nothing hppens.

I went there earlier today and was shocked by the new design. It is not user-friendly at all for a news website. The old version allows you to check out the major news quick and you can go deeper if you want. This design is all about optimizing the 300x250 advertisement that shows up huge when your page loads.
  • PixelRuler · 1 month ago
The old site had a LARGER ad unit at upper right. Now --> 300x250. Old --> 336x280. Discuss.
  • PJ Edwards · 1 month ago
    Congrats on your new column!
  • Jorge Fiffe · 1 month ago
Oh, CNN, you could teach multitudes on UI to your news counterparts.
  • Ryan Lalonde · 1 month ago
I love the new design. It looks much nicer then the old one.
  • shawnduffy · 1 month ago
I think it looks awesome! I can't wait until they implement actual news reporting... that's gonna be so cool!
  • Liz · 1 month ago
Considering the wide age-range of CNN.com users, I think the images could be smaller and the type font be much larger. Yes, I know you can increase the size of the font but just the "normal" view should be bigger. It's not friendly to those with visual impairments. They are trying to squeeze too much text in, at least on their front page. Once you go to an individual story, it's okay.
  • Andy Stief · 1 month ago
I like the new layout, I just wish the advertising space on the upper right wasn't so prominent. I would have added a vertical dividing line between that section and the actual content in the center/left portion of the web page. But video-centric is definitely the way to go.
  • blipsman · 1 month ago
Ugh! The design itself is fine, but it seems that actual, real news is now secondary to the site -- shoved into a small column on the left side and way below the "fold." Some of us use CNN.com to get news at work, etc. when we can't watch videos, and at home I'd rather watch news on my HDTV. Looks like I'll be trying out new primary news sites after primarily using CNN.com since 1995.
  • Name · 1 month ago
The real news is still there, that left column is nearly identical to what they had before. A main story image, and a set of recent headline links. On my 13", some of those headline links are below the fold (where before they weren't), but I wouldn't call that 'way below the fold'.

But it's the same amount of headline links as they had before on the left side.
  • Astralis · 1 month ago
They haven't had actual news for years and have seen more people stop visiting the site because there is little that they offer. A redesign with a focus on video is just putting lipstick on a pig.
  • jaclyn gordyan · 1 month ago
CNN: "Tech" tab defaults back to the old site... #fail
  • Name · 1 month ago
I think they're still rolling it out to all sections. Tech seems to now be in new design, but I found another page that wasn't yet.
  • L99Kdotcom · 1 month ago

    Who??

I think mainstream media is truly dead...
  • Droid News Net · 1 month ago
I think it looks so much like Walter Bernard's classic TIME rework from the late seventies the designer(s) couldn't have been unaware of the similarities.

    And it's still CNN.
  • paramendra · 1 month ago
Columnist at CNN? Wow. Do you get to link back to Mashable?
  • garmahis · 1 month ago
I'd like to see real live video stream from CNN not some kind of second hand online channel with different hosts.

Mashable, your CNN website screenshot colors look weird in Firefox and Safari on Windows.

Get some REAL news, FOXNews. Fair and Balanced. CNN is nothing but liberal spin.

The CNN website was definitely due for a change/new look. I like the top portion of the homepage, however I'm not sure how I feel about the amount of information in the 'sections' section (e.g. Entertainment, Politics, Opinion, etc.). When I see too many options/links I am more likely to just skip it altogether. Would rather see fewer links in each section and just use the 'More' button.

I think it's great that there is separate section for 'Video,' and more to view.

I like the personaliztion of the content, but it seems like a repeat of the 'sections' section. Need to peruse it more ...

Overall, I like the use of color and crispness.

    Yes
CNN really need to change to attract more and more visitors.
by the way,the new look of CNN is pretty good
  • FadiPick · 1 month ago
I don't think that new design is user friendly either. There ought to be more spaces between the headlines of the stories, and I would recommend a different font than the one used.

I'd rather go to foxnews.com. I wish that site would get a redesign too!
  • Astralis · 1 month ago
CNN has a major problem and more video nor a redesign isn't going to solve it. The real problem is the content. CNN favors the middle ground and so-called news that they believe people think is important and end up featuring bland news that I don't care to read.

For me, it has stopped becoming a news source that visit regularly to learn the news. Instead, I use it as a go-to source for breaking news and election results because they do a fine job in that department. Otherwise, I have no desire to read or watch any of their bland stories. Simply gussying up a bland article that I could read into a video is not going to make it more appealing.

For illustration, here are some of the top news stories appearing on the site and why the redesign isn't going to make it better:

    Cornwell's Scarpetta gets a BlackBerry
    Jackson's last great performance
    Dog teaches children to read
    Singer Morrissey collapses on stage
    Andrew Lloyd Webber has cancer
Jackson colleagues: Movie an 'honor project'

I like it. It looks very clean and slick. There might be just a little too much going on but overall I think it's a good design change.
  • harveym · 1 month ago
While I like this new design, it really reminds me of CNN from like the 90's or was it the 80's? the look that is

the CNN on red also reminds me of the Canadian railway CN. haha.

I like the look in general.

I hate the new layout. Intead of being able to scroll down and quickly find the stories I want, the page is cluttered. Not clean or user friendly.
  • dotmafia · 1 month ago
i hate the new look on the cnn website. the large area of red at the top of each page is very harsh on the eyes (and i'm only 38). i think it should have been blue. just my opinion.
  • paul kelley · 1 month ago
I'm Liking everything above "Editor's choice". Below that needs some serious work. That area doesn't seem thought out yet. I'm really enjoying the direction though. And if you're complaining about the advertisement at the top, you've obviously never worked in this industry before. I'm sure creative had better solutions, but in the end, not their call. Not in love with the big red masthead, but it is on brand.
  • Dan · 1 month ago
The whole video centric thing is just annoying. I dont want to listen to audio most of the time and I sure as hell don't want to be watching a commercial before every video.
  • Jason Cooper · 1 month ago
Sure its fine. Doesn't change the crap reporting behind the new interface.
  • money belt · 1 month ago
Cleaner, stronger look, but for the ad box pretending to be a news item in the third column.
  • xxdesmus · 1 month ago
I think it looks really cheap. It looks like it's a "select a design" from a pre-packaged set of themes in Dreamweaver.

It looks far less authoritative in my opinion.
  • uidesignguide · 1 month ago
It seems like they buried the top stories: Immediately I was wondering why they were not more prominent. They font should be a bit larger on them and maybe push them up more.
  • hennehn · 1 month ago
Don't like it. Its not much different from the old cnn.com. wtf?
  • Vadim · 1 month ago
Hey guys, does anyone have any idea where the heck went articles from "Time" magazine? They used to be in the lower left corner of the cnn.com page (old layout). Now I can't find them at all, and they were one on my favorite parts of the cnn.com site... >:(((
  • carolefordham · 1 month ago
I do not like the new format for CNN on-line. It's much to busy. Now I'm not even reading much of anything. Please go back to the old format.

    Thank you.
  • Michael · 1 month ago
    It's slower!
  • TJ · 1 month ago
Hate it. It feels like a blog, and not in a good way. Too visually hectic, too video based, not enough focus on news. And the red they chose is too jarring - I want to read the news, not be screamed at and thrown into a panic by the website. I feel like it's yelling RED ALERT, RED ALERT!
  • Astralis · 1 month ago
CNN is the Parade Magazine of news sites.
  • Alex · 1 month ago
new design is a total disgrace, this is coming from professional designer, information architect and usability expert / interface designer. Red header- takes all attention, way too powerful, cant read story titles in reverse white on black - BAD usability, top story is unclear, to text just pics and no focus. Overall site usability is totally degraded, compared to msnbc.com this is 10 steps back. WHo cares what features are there, its unusable!
  • lang · 1 month ago
    1. Great layout and color (red does not signify republican!; it draws attention).
    2. Videos on front page too big and fonts too small.
    3. No choice in picking videos to watch; I don't want to "useless news".
    4. Useless News= celebrities; reporters/anchors putting self in news and talking about themselves; promoting their book, looks like infomercials. (any reason Gupta has to have 4-5 pictures of him on Health page?)
    5. CNN=RNN- Repeat News Network; repeats same stories over and over...sometimes the title is changed, but it is the same story or a different reporter covers the same story.
    6. CNN=BNN- on weekends it has black reporters covering black stories; Tie ins w/Oprah and Black Essence.
    7. CNN- prefers hiring foreign born reporters/anchors (don't make me name them and I have nothing against them!). I guess they like to outsource because they can't find qualified U.S. citizens.
    8. CNN- mostly has men on the panels; Where are the Women?
    9. CNN- has more stories on Hong Kong, S. Korea, China, and India. WHY? (and usually useless news)
    10. Where are the stories closer to home?
    11. Use firefox w/addons- adblock plus, ghostery, flagfox, trackerwatcher, ie tab-to use ie thru ff to get rid of most advertising.

I like the separation of news, U.S., World, technology, etc.
However, what's up with the automatic scrolling and huge banner ads?
They expand/contract and tend to push the landing page around while you're reading.
    Annoying.
