I'm really glad to see you giving MySpace a fair shot at Web 2.0 viability. I've been using it for a couple years and it really has some great Web 2.0 qualities, especially one you didn't mention specifically: the more people that use it, the better and more useful it becomes. Witness the rise of MySpace popularized bands!
I agree fully, however, that MySpace is trying to host too many of it's own services. I think they'd be wise to help it's users implement more of their own html (they offer no guidance, and it's tricky for the novice user). Externally hosted video and other content-embed services should just become easier to track, monitor and search.
Really, though, the one media they have very successfully implemented: music. All of my friend's and my bands are on there, and any musician who isn't on already is most certainly a "lametard."

Nice post, but I think you may forget one other thing about the youth demographic--it is extremely fickle. Here today, gone tomorrow... there is a definite possibility that MySpace is a fad, and all that influence could be gone tomorrow when something new comes along. I'm not so far removed from high school that I don't remember when everyone used AIM, then every school had their own forums on ezBoard, then everyone used HotOrNot, then Facebook, then MySpace... what's next? Surely something... MySpace is a force right now, to be certain, but I'm not so sure I'm ready to say it will take on the already battle-tested blogosphere (relatively speaking) in terms of net influence.

Personally, I think MySpace is more proof that the "Geek Divide" isn't as big as some people recently have been making it out to be. These kids are the "early adopters" as you say, willing to explore all the aggregators out there and bend them to their own purposes, and oblivious of the fact that what their doing is considered "too hard" for the average consumer. Well, they are the average consumer, or will be in a few years.
I think all the people who've been going on about how betas are bad because they're too complicated and too geeky should take a look at the MySpace crowd... I think it's going to be a challenge to keep these guys challenged! They like complexity, options, hooks and DIY. That doesn't mean that usability isn't important, but I think it gives some more rope to developers (whether or not they use that to hang themselves is the question)...
I think the new completely integrated lifestyle is emerging in front of us and the 'lametards' are going to be left behind pretty quickly.

Actually, one of the main things I've seen when kids talk about MySpace is that, yeah, it's lame, but it's a great place to meet members of the opposite sex and "hook up." Never underestimate the lengths that young adults will go to to get laid.

While I'm sure that the younger demographic makes up a bulk of MySpace users, this year I've noticed an exponentially growing trend of people registering and rabidly using MySpace on a daily basis from my demographic -- mid-to-late 20's, college-educated professionals. Surely a lucrative target audience and perhaps slightly-less fleeting of a demographic. In a few years we'll be past the point of wanting the 'next best thing' and the switching cost to another social network won't be worth it.
I guess my point is that this is NOT just a place where 14-18 year olds go to hook up -- its much much larger than that. Nothing short of a social (not just online) phenomenom.

I totally agree with you, iTodd. I am a 33 year old professional, and have enjoyed communicating through MySpace for almost a year now. I found it to be a wonderful tool when planning my high school reunion. I was able to quickly find people that had moved from Texas to Oklahoma, Utah, and even Hawaii. Because I am also a middle school teacher, I also see the overwhelming influence it has on teens(my students are mostly 14 years old). Then again, I have seen taken a peek into some of their profiles, and they are actually using some of the grammar elements that I have struggled to teach them. lol.
I won't go so far as to say that MySpace is good for their education, but I do feel that if some of these kids need a sense of belonging, they can find it on MySpace. Which brings up the thought of adult freaks that may want to take advantage of the needs of the younger ones on it.
There's no perfect answer. I only wish we were allowed to teach the kids at school about the safety concerns. I take into my own hands to discuss issues with them, but if I were to mention anything about MySpace during class time, I'd probably get fired.
My only wish is to be able to seperate the little ones from the adults and help MySpace get a better image. To the less informed, ignorant person, it is thought of as immature and inappropriate to communicate via MySpace...Maybe it's just a matter of time.

This is an interesting post. I have myself wanted to take some time to look at MySpace carefully but haven't gotten to that.
Lawrence's comment is right on. Considering that MySpace is continuing to grow there is so much untapped potential. These are all early adopters.
Think of all the tools/services/etc. that might appeal to a MySpace users to look cool - music, tshirts, clocks, graphics, videos, pictures and so on. Can Cafepress service be private labeled and offered to MySpace users? I think there can be a lot of possibilities but one may have to consider what providers true value to the MySpace generation...and their perceived value may different from the non-MySpacers.

I really shouldn't share these ideas - you guys are expressing exactly what I was aiming to do - build a walled garden edge feeder. :)
However, as Vaibhav points out, MySpacers do not spend their money on the same things we do (do they spend much money at all?). A survey I read showed they don't pay for music very much, don't use Amazon etc. I'm guessing they don't pay for pro accounts either (ala Flickr). There are also rules that prevent you actually advertising anything on the site. Gaining scale on MySpace might be straightforward, but monetization is still a problem.

Lots of people are arguing about Bebo or Myspace
They say that Bebo has more features, but surely with the ability to promote your band, have music on your profile etc is not limited with MySpace. MySpace uses HTML, which in my opinion means possibilities are endless. Someone can make up anything for HTML and with Bebo you are only allowed text in your fields.

Myspace has all this Cash from the recent purchase of the site but why can they not get their shit together? I do not get it?
I am addicted to logging in to see my emails on myspace and many times the site is down. At least a few times a day. sometimes funny things happen. for example I log in today and it says that it does not recognize me and i may have been deleted from the database.
the other day the database was down.
Does anyone else experience this? I do not know why but when these sites get big all of them seem to not be able to keep their site working well.

The problem with myspace is that almost all of their development time is moving towards fixing scaling problems, and adding new features rather than fixing a variety of things that don't work. As MySpace becomes ever more popular, they are going to really have to think about how the hell they are going to keep scaling a dead technology (ColdFusion).

The guy's right you know - I resisted http://www.myspace.com/clubbinguk but in the end millions of users and potential traffic just cannot be ignored for any online business!

Ok! I like what you are writting about, but the problem is Myspace is being blocked for schools! I think that if we are done with our work and we have turned it in and there is nothing to do then we should be allowed to go and check our messages on myspace! There is nothing wrong with that! So me and pretty much the whole student body think that Myspace should not be blocked under some sercumstances. I think that if they unblock it, we should only be allowed to get on it if we are done! They say that Bebo has more features, but surely with the ability to promote your band, have music on your profile etc is not limited with MySpace. MySpace uses HTML, which in my opinion means possibilities are endless.

Myspace sucks the life out of members and communities, stop feeding Rupert money, he does not need it...and it is your content...Maybe the revenue model should put members and communities first....Myspace continues to follow their stale old act of creating large amounts of revenue on the backs of members and their content.
myspace is easily worth at least a billion, and where is the value coming from other than members/the communities content and activities.
How much ad revenue is myspace sharing with members that generate ad revenue for them ? Are they giving anything back to the community that has put them where they are ?
I am technology consultant, and this summer I became so feed up with the share cropper mentality of sites like myspace that I decided to build an application that shares the wealth that is created with the community.
We also have a stand alone ad service and we have a granular micro revenue sharing service that allows members to share their revenue with Friends, Groups, or Causes.
And unlike myspace and the rest we will be releasing most of the service to the open source community because we know we are not the smartest guys in the room.

When I use myspace, I use it to relax and to get my mind off things. My psychiatrist told me to stop using it cuz it is messing with me. I have to disagree and say it has helped me to meet my fiance. I agree fully, however, that MySpace is trying to host too many of it's own services. I think they'd be wise to help it's users implement more of their own html (they offer no guidance, and it's tricky for the novice user). Externally hosted video and other content-embed services should just become easier to track, monitor and search.
Really, though, the one media they have very successfully implemented: music. All of my friend's and my bands are on there, and any musician who isn't on already is most certainly a "lametard."

I think all the people who've been going on about how betas are bad because they're too complicated and too geeky should take a look at the MySpace crowd... I think it's going to be a challenge to keep these guys challenged! They like complexity, options, hooks and DIY. That doesn't mean that usability isn't important, but I think it gives some more rope to developers (whether or not they use that to hang themselves is the question)...
I think the new completely integrated lifestyle is emerging in front of us and the 'lametards' are going to be left behind pretty quickly.

Yep, I think you're right - it's more by accident than design. They still show signs of trying to control the whole show - MySpace (allegedly?) attempted to block YouTube and were forced to backtrack after the users revolted.

I guess my point is that this is NOT just a place where 14-18 year olds go to hook up -- its much much larger than that. Nothing short of a social (not just online) phenomenom.
Because I am also a middle school teacher, I also see the overwhelming influence it has on teens(my students are mostly 14 years old).
Then again, I have seen taken a peek into some of their profiles, and they are actually using some of the grammar elements that I have struggled to teach them. lol.
I won't go so far as to say that MySpace is good for their education, but I do feel that if some of these kids need a sense of belonging, they can find it on MySpace. Which brings up the thought of adult freaks that may want to take advantage of the needs of the younger ones on it.
There's no perfect answer. I only wish we were allowed to teach the kids at school about the safety concerns. I take into my own hands to discuss issues with them, but if I were to mention anything about MySpace during class time, I'd probably get fired.
My only wish is to be able to seperate the little ones from the adults and help MySpace get a better image. To the less informed, ignorant person, it is thought of as immature and inappropriate to communicate via MySpace...Maybe it's just a matter of time.

This is an interesting post. I have myself wanted to take some time to look at MySpace carefully but haven't gotten to that.
Lawrence's comment is right on. Considering that MySpace is continuing to grow there is so much untapped potential. These are all early adopters.
Think of all the tools/services/etc. that might appeal to a MySpace users to look cool - music, tshirts, clocks, graphics, videos, pictures and so on. Can Cafepress service be private labeled and offered to MySpace users? I think there can be a lot of possibilities but one may have to consider what providers true value to the MySpace generation...and their perceived value may different from the non-MySpacers.
However, as Vaibhav points out, MySpacers do not spend their money on the same things we do (do they spend much money at all?). A survey I read showed they don't pay for music very much, don't use Amazon etc. I'm guessing they don't pay for pro accounts either (ala Flickr). There are also rules that prevent you actually advertising anything on the site. Gaining scale on MySpace might be straightforward, but monetization is still a problem.

I am addicted to logging in to see my emails on myspace and many times the site is down. At least a few times a day. sometimes funny things happen. for example I log in today and it says that it does not recognize me and i may have been deleted from the database.
the other day the database was down.
Does anyone else experience this? I do not know why but when these sites get big all of them seem to not be able to keep their site working well.
Will it be their downfall?
