Mashable - The Social Media Guide: Motorola Droid’s New Stealth Commercial [Video]

  • Linda · 1 month ago
So ... Droid kills horses and destroys the earth? So much more than I need from a phone.
  • Lawyerman · 1 month ago
That's a pretty scary commercial! I'm afraid that a Droid phone is coming to kill me Terminator style.
  • Jugge · 1 month ago
Wonder how this will work in Iraq? Usually there are no phones in what gets dropped there.
  • aiyahh · 1 month ago
Well, since the video showed jets shooting something, and everything that came out flew right into the ground, not hitting a single thing, even though there were people, places, animals, etc in the area. I would have to say that the Droid is a humongous MISS!!! EPIC FAIL!
  • Derek Ross · 1 month ago
IMO, it missed because they weren't supposed to hit people. They were to get into the vicinity of people that needed the phone. Such as the ship at see, the guy on the pay phone, the car in the middle of the desert, someone at a gas station. Verizon commercials talk about how extensive their network is. I assumed this was just showing that the Droid could be used anywhere, when people need cell phone coverage most.

Not a failure, but as usual "aggressiveness" is on the air again. As for the commercial, I Still Love the

"iDont commerical" by Droid vs "iDont care" by apple-fans

and they just keep on coming... :) Too bad, verizon is in deep-trouble, now that AT&T didn't laugh at Verizon's mocking commercial against them.
  • sandygeroge · 1 month ago
Do you know if i will be able to sync the droid with my mac? through itunes?
until this happens i think i will still have a problem with verizon…

syncing is just part of the game though there are rumors that it will be applicable as a new patch will update this glitch. As for the commercial, I Still Love the

You don't need to sync.... when you plug it in, it pops up like a flash drive - just drag and drop -- NO SOFTWARE NEEDED!!!!
  • r0cketman22 · 1 month ago
HAHA! Awesome. I don't think it'll change the world or anything, but I'm very excited about Android and how it's evolving. 3.0 will probably warrant this type of ad!
  • Gary · 1 month ago
Blackberry and Palm will take a hit once Droid is released. The next iPhone coming this summer will make even more waves.
  • mamath · 1 month ago
Weird way to distribute a phone ;)
Good looking clip but IMAO, completely pointless.
Disclosure: I once was an Apple fanboy, but not anymore
  • 1369ic · 1 month ago
It gets your attention, which is all you can hope to do with a pre-launch ad, really. People are so used to hyperbole and over-the-top ads I don't think they'll blink at the actual content.

I still say the Motorola need to re-think the name as if i remember right the word Droid and Droids is owned by George Lucus last i was told as mI know people who got some nasty letter to not use the word "Droid" and it wasn't that long ago . I would hope the did lic the name with GL people if not we a change in name could come right after it fails. Verizon is still pissed off after turning down the iPhone when it was shown to them and if they are that stupid to not have seen a good thing .. well do i need to say more . I mean if i waked in adn showed you the iPhone and said i was wanting you to sign up to be the only company with it you would have jumped on it right? V look at it and passed .. they didn't like it and want some kind of change that made no scene adn lost a great deal. with this phone be the one to kill the iPhone .. nope it just another copy of a copy and will be forgotten as soon as the next version of the next iPhone killer comes out .
  • pascalino · 1 month ago
The did license the name from Lucas, it's in the fine print on all their advertising.
  • andytgeezer · 1 month ago
What an absolutely ridiculous advert. It's a phone. If somebody dropped a phone from a stealth bomber next to my boat I would sue their asses!
  • Josh · 1 month ago
I'd buy it only if they PROMISED to stealth bomb it next to my boat.
  • ducati1045 · 1 month ago
I thought is was good made you really watch llike it was going to be a new movie commig out
  • Sonya · 1 month ago
First an advert showing what the iPhone doesn't, now some spectacular 2012-like bullshit... seems like the Droid marketing team struggles to find its product's own values
  • Jensen_G · 1 month ago
I thought that hot new products are supposed to make you feel good? This just fills me with dread. I do not want the phone that I carry with me every waking minute to be associated with violence and destruction. What were they thinking?
  • Patrick · 1 month ago
It seems no body gets the fact that the point of the commercial is to be SEEN, not a factual practical means by which the device will be delivered. Good grief, it is entertainment nothing more.
  • Danjalier · 1 month ago
    I love it! DROID DOESSssrxcghghcrcchhh..ch..r

Building anticipation is great, but I think this strategy is not very effective. The majority of smart phones are hard to use for the average person, so why would you build more mystery in to it? (seriously?, an outdated cowboy stereotype saying 'what is thaaat?!' - seriously?) iPhone commercials are successful because they show you the ACTUAL usage of the phone and HOW EASY IT IS. I would not suggest they copy the execution of those spots, rather that they show the reality of how this phone works. Because in the long term, this mystery/high-tech strategy will fail.
  • Tavis Malcolm · 1 month ago
This reminds me of that car commercial in the super bowl a few years back with the pack of deer running through the forest. Remember that one? None-tech-savvy people aren't going to know what this commercial is advertising. I realize that those people aren't the market they're shooting for, but then why advertise on tv on all?
  • facebook-562439659 · 1 month ago
It seems the detractors are missing the inherent symbolism in these ads where the phones are being dropped in remote areas. It has everything to do with the phone and the message Verizon is using versus AT&T
  • johnmc · 1 month ago
Dropping these things as shown doesn't exactly seem like the friendliest delivery method. I'd rather start things off with a new phone on a less confrontational basis.
  • e cigarette · 1 month ago
This thing is going to be so sick.

100 style- 0% applicable. This could have been more effective by positioning all the benefits of this phone with a little style mixed in. Benefits include: customizable, how it makes standalone GPS units obsolete, Apps (the rage), etc... I understand its a "buzz builder" but I think the fanboys and techies are already on board.... now it needs that majority of customers who need to know "why it is important to them" and "what it can do for them"... am I off base? It also should have ended with a CTA like "visit verizonwireless.com/Droid". In the age of share-bility every video should point "home". Regardless I will own this phone in Dec. :)

WTH! So many spam comments! =/

I didn't like the commercial even. Makes no sense. On can't even get a clue if it's droid commercial or a movie trailer.
  • Jorge Fiffe · 1 month ago
Verizon is smart about promoting Droid using more of an aesthetic approach and they're be very consistent about Droid (licensed from Star Wars), spots that are very much in the "Star Wars" style, and all of that leads well into the fact that Android 2.0 is amazing in customization to suit the individual consumer. Not all apples look the same people.

Just Plain BRILLIANT!!! The old cowboy at the end delivers the line perfectly and the Transformers like sound and red spark is a nice touch. ( as an iPhone user I'm happy finally someone seriously stepped up to keep apple on their toes ;-)

I know that the Droid is going to have multi-touch and its also going to have tethering capabilities (you can use it as an aircard for the internet)

Check them out because I know im getting excited about the Droid...that new commercial is really cool and I wonder if they are going to have like a 5 part series or something. I think that would be baller.

Anyone who has young kids will immediately recognize this as a rip off of the very first episode of the ever popular Ben-10 where the Omnitrix is jettisoned from a space ship under attack. It lands in the woods, Ben Tenison walks over to the edge of the small crater, the device opens up and inside is the Omnitrix.

    Ben 10 is Awesome!

The Droid is not nearly half as cool as the Omnitrix!
  • Mr. Peebles · 1 month ago
They don't even show the product. Remember the Lexus vs. Infinity war? Infinity never showed the product. They also never ended up selling vehicles. This hype-based marketing won't compete with savvy consumers who want sexy products, not sexy ads. The Droid won't ever sell nearly as well as iPhone.

Love the Droid commercials! Wish I could afford one. Love Motorola and I'm ready for a new OS [hate my phone's OS]

    scary commercial
  • iamgurglegurgledroibloopbloop · 2 weeks ago
I guess the other 900,000 Droids that didn't sell were the ones strategically dropped in the ocean?
  • Douglas · 2 weeks ago
After reading some of the posts, it's amazing to me that people who are smart enough to use the phones aren't smart enough to get the point of the ad!
  • Lane H · 1 week ago
When I saw this commercial on television I thought it was an anti-terrorism campaign for some political group.

It was kind of odd that it turned out to be a phone commercial.
