Mashable - The Social Media Guide: Most Popular Twitter Clients Revealed

  • Tyler · 10 months ago
I use Tweetdeck and love it. If Twitter was smart they would buy something like Tweetdeck. The ability to create groups, use twitpic, and shorten urls, along with all the other Twitter tools makes Tweetdeck just too good not to use.

I have recently made the switch from TweetDeck to PeopleBrowsr and I'm loving it. The greatest advantage is that I keep my groups and other user preferences while jumping from work, home, and friend's computers.

Probably not too surprising that TweetDeck scores so highly, as desktops and laptops must figure pretty high as places where people keep track of Twitter happenings. I'm currently using that at home - prior to that, was using the TwitterFox extension for Firefox. I use the website when I'm at work if I want to quickly check for any good updates, and I'll use my mobile phone to update when I'm out and about and feel the need. :)

I've started using HootSuite and really like it. It might not be as robust as some of the others, but because it's web based it doesn't drag my system down like TweetDeck.

I also like url shortening feature it has built in.
The search function isn't as intuitive as I'd like, but it works.

I used to be on the web. Then i started using twitteriffic and my twitter soared. Now I'm using DestroyTwitter which is an AIR application. With Destroytwitter I can easily shorten urls - main rason I switched from twitteriffic. I don't like that DT doesn't display replies differently like twitteriffic does. With DT retweeting is easy, so thats good. You also can click on someone and see their info in the DT interface itself. You can also search twitter from DT. All that's good.

Really interesting that the Web is on top? VERY interesting since Twitter isnt taken the opportunity to then monetize the web site? Twittad seems to be the leader there, with 2 clickable spaces for users to monetize their profile and give a % to Twitter it would make sense.

Also, you mention Twitter should buy Tweetdeck. What would be a really good article for you to write is the VC behind Twitter and the other popular applications. I.E. Who put money into Summize? Same VC as Twitter. Who put money into TweetDeck? Same VC as Twitter. The game isnt changing really, the writing is on the wall.

If I'm reading the page right, twitstat's list *Only* tracks the people who follow it, or 6,000 or so people. Another twitter stats service, Tweetstats seems to have a more accurate tally: http://www.tweetstats.com/twitter_stats as it counts all updates.

Mostly use twitter.com, but do like tweetdeck for its sorting into groups. I would like to find a web-app that would let me do that -- I don't like desktop clients.

I'm curious about the web-app tweet3.com, as what I see of it looks cool: check multiple twitter accounts; select on a tweet-by-tweet basis whether a tweet gets posted to FaceBook. BUT I haven't seen any major reviews of it, so don't know whether to trust my login pwds to it.

I currently use EventBox, Tweetie as my main twitter clients. I still have Twhirl, but got rid of Tweetdeck. I also use the web interface a lot, and twitpic and twitterfeed.

I think Eventbox is relatively new, it's currently in beta, but it handles Twitter very well and it also adds in flickr, facebook, google reader, rss and reddit. It's an all-in-one app that doesn't run on Adobe Air but rather as a native Mac OS X client (sorry windows users). If you have a mac i'd give eventbox a try if you're also on the other forementioned networks

Like most I usually tweet from the web Twitter interface but during the big chat fests (#GNO and #journchat and the recent #WBUR tweetup), I swap it for Tweetgrid (usually a 1x3 grid.) I used #journchat as a way to experiment with several different options -- a new option every week -- and blogged about it of course. Sounds like I have to go back and try Tweetdeck again -- ugh, a download.

It has to be Tweetie for me. The latest release really set it streets ahead of any other iPhone app for Twitter. Easy favouriting, replying etc without too much fuss.

Also, for surreptitious 9-5 use, TwitterFox can't be bettered. Unfortunately it always seems to be at least three minutes behind, though...

I don't like Tweetdeck. It's feels 'heavy', sluggish and still kinda buggy. Memory hog too!

The groups feature often hangs up on me and users added into it will sometimes disappear for some odd reason. Got to give it credit for being the first client (I believe?) to sort users into different groups though.

Twhirl is pretty fantastic, the preview version right now has a great multiple tabbed search feature for monitoring keywords and with spellcheck and Twitter search for replies, its pretty much similar to Tweetdeck. Groups are also coming for the new version I believe, which would make it the definitive client by far.

I liked TwitterFox, and took Twirl for a spin, but I actually prefer Twitter on the web. I'm just not too fond of all sorts of apps running in the background, and found I was too tempted to leave them on, and all the tweets were way too distracting when I had work to get done. Now I go to Twitter in between tasks, quick check-ins instead of constant throttle (or should I say, twoddle? Maybe that's spelled twoddl in the 2.0 world.)

Twitterberry was a disappointment. It only displays the first 20 chars or so, so the information that's displayed isn't very useful. Maybe there's a way to make the font smaller? I should check that out before abandoning it, I suppose.

I'd like to investigate HootSuite a little more.

I'm surprised no one mentioned Socialthing.com. I love it because it's Web based, updates constantly, and I can read messages from other services like Plurk, Facebook, Ping.fm, etc. I have Twirl but hardly ever use it. As for Twitter.com itself, the page never updates so it's useless for keeping up with my friends Twits.

@BCK is right, TweetStats collects data from every update that gets posted to Twitter, whereas Twitstat has a limited amount of data. As http://www.tweetstats.com/twitter_stats shows, the web is still the way to go with >50% of updates. TweetDeck is currently behind txt and TwitterFeed, but this is normal on the weekends as more people go mobile and it's usage will jump back up during the week.

I have no doubt that DestroyTwitter will catch up to these other clients in no time. TweetDeck has a year on DT, but DT is about to take the lead. It's not all big and clunky like TweetDeck. There is an option for a wider workspace, and filters are coming very soon. DT is very fluid, and WAY lower on memory. Give DestroyTwitter a run. I bet you'll be satisfied. http://destroytwitter.com

There is an option for a wider workspace, and filters are coming very soon. DT is very fluid, and WAY lower on memory. Give DestroyTwitter a run. I bet you'll be satisfied. http://destroytwitter.com

I've used Twhirl before but when I discovered that Tweetdeck has a better user interface and can follow twitterites without the need to login into the twitter account made my decision to go with Tweetdeck and dump Twhirl

I use the TwitKit addon for Firefox. It works really well and I like having something I can always see and (this is the sad part) I enjoy the 30-second refresh time.

Addendum to my original reply - was using TweetDeck, now giving DestroyTwitter a go. Initial impressions are good, it seems more robust and responsive. :)

My favorite Twitter tool is Mauku running on my Nokia N810. The Web performance has been spotty enough to make me not want to bother with Twitter until I found Mauku which also updates Jaiku.

I don’t see the point of Twitter, Inc. buying TweetDeck without buying the top clients for other platforms, too, e.g. those for the BlackBerry and iPhone.

I’d rather see the now-Twitter Search developers work on a mechanism to enable searching of one’s direct messages..

I use Tweetie from my iPhone, and Flock as my browser (integrates my social media into one spot, which helps - fairly primitive interface/ options for Twitter & FB, but workable just to keep up). Like Twhirl, especially because of how easily it accommodates multiple accounts.

I use TweetDeck because it has everything you need right in front of you. Plus the alert option is quite helpful.

TwitterFox extension. I don't have to have the web client open in a separate tab and I get the updates in a little pop-up in the corner (which I love).

My personal favorite (Mobile) is Twittelator. I'd love a Mac OS version of it. I use TweetDeck on occasion, but it - like most Air apps - is a memory hog. Nambu is my choice at this time for a lightweight Mac client with URL shortening support.

I'm new to Twitter. After installing a FF add-on, I discovered Digsby and Blu for the
desktop. Digsby covers my IM's, email, and social networks. Blu isn't as capable but is
    a pleasure to use.

I use mostly TwitterFox, because I am on Firefox all the time for other stuff,
and its just plain easy to use.
I use TwitterFon on my iPhone though, also because it's just easy.
  • FlintZA · 9 months ago
I'm really surprised Digsby isn't higher on the list (it's at 36 right now).
It may not have the added functionality some clients have (like groups) but considering it's aupport for everything else it makes such sense as a client and it's an absolute pleasure to use.
I use it as my main Twitter client, and for 'broadcasting' I use Ping.FM (currently #11) via Digsby IM. Twitterfeed handles my RSS to Twitter (again via Ping.FM) and friendfeed passes on my Google Reader shares.

DestroyTwitter is another Adobe Air based client similar to TweetDeck. the interface is smooth, and quick - uses less resources than TweekDeck - though it doesn't have the same type of group options - though you can filter streams.

I personally use EventBox from The Cosmic Machine (http://thecosmicmachine.com/). Along with Twitter, I also use it for all of my RSS feeds and integration with my Flickr account. It also has integration with several other services like Facebook, Reddit, Google Reader, Digg and more but I currently don't use any of them.
