The high volume of tweets, posts, etc is awesome as an indicator of the levels of support and interest around the Iran Election. It also means there is plenty of data available for some enterprising forensic psychologist to identify the personality types that are using the main hashtags.

I have been tracking #iranelection tag closely and have seen my share of:

Bandwagon Passengers (posts usually a single word like 'awesome!' or 'wow!')
Opportunist Spammers (ie posting links to their ebooks/ porno sites etc)
Disinformation Spammers - At best, just out to confuse; at worst, malicious propagandists

Sad and/or irritating as it may be, all these 'types' are representative of their various sectors of society. You can't claim the 'social' moniker without them.

Fortunately http://twitspam.org/?p=1403 Twitter: @twitspamorg is trying to name and shame the worst offenders :)

Yes the Iran election is very very important to many people even me. It would be great imho if the current president were impeached, he is a super loose canon that needs to be out of power. A man like that possessing nuclear weapons is not god for anyone on the planet except for the obviously few that think just like he does.

Ben - thought you would be interested in this. See article about a new Twitter trend - tweeps asking Google to change their logo for one day for the people of Iran. http://tinyurl.com/l4wgzf

I have been caching data myself the past 24 hours, it seems that the #iranelection tag, I am getting a slightly lower number (I am assuming a margin of error).
Sill if you want we can compare data. We might find a pattern.

This is amazing and addictive. I'm trying to post as many annotated links as possible. The links just keep coming. Some good and some bad. I'm filtering through the spam links. A couple have been really offensive. Check out the spam list of twitterers on the #IranElection twt stream.

Ben - These numbers are either dramatically overstated or Twitter is limiting which results they are publishing via the API. I use my product justSignal to track every tweet for Iran - and the max volume I've seen since mid 6-15 is about 17k tweets per hour.
I'm making all the data public at http://justsignal.com/freeiran/archive - you can grab the hourly XML files there and check for yourself, but I'm 100% certain there were never 200k tweets per hour (at least not that ever made it OUT of Twitter in any way).
