4 little words...no, you are too young...that's all it takes. be a parent. they don't get the exposure. maybe they remain children a little longer. 'growing up'too soon can be PAINFUL. I know. disney did not make miley. ALL of us who buy her massive amounts of product make miley.
it is our call. mine are just too young for all of this 'wholesome fun'. i am holding out for a little more substance. our children are growing up too fast ,yes, and we parents are condoning it, sometimes, even encouraging it.

Gosh, I realize that I've become absolutely jaded because I don't think any of this is in the least bit accidental or coincidental. And I need not look further than my iTunes.
My kids love Hannah Montana's music (never seen the show). When I went to iTunes to download the latest, I noticed that instead of "Hannah Montana" the songs are listed as Miley Cyrus. She's NOT Hannah Montana and she wants us to know... much like Jessica Biel's Maxim photos to escape her 7th Heaven image.
Sadly, Miley - like Britney before her - is an industry creation. I think there is very little that is not orchestrated, controlled or pre-determined.
And yes, Miley just released an album... What a perfect time to have your name in the news!

I wouldn't go so far as to say that kids are "forced" to grow up faster. No one is really forcing them, however, it could be said that the media in general and Hollywood are blasting us with so much filth these days that the only ones that are becoming blind to it are the parents and the kids are soaking it all up.

If parents would get more involved and speak out when their child acted out in the way Miley and so many others have done, then I'm pretty confident that we'd see few mishaps like this, not because they would be better at being hidden, but rather because they don't happen.

A lot is being made of the quip "I have sons..", and in retrospect, I think I made a poor language choice in phrasing that.

Like it or not, I believe that young women are more subject to sexual objectification in our society than young boys. It's very important to educate our sons, but the lessons to teach are a bit different. The same methods very likely apply, but in terms of sending the wrong message through sexually suggestive photographs, boys are not as vulnerable from that angle.

Again, not that they aren't vulnerable at all - there is a whole bevy of issues that are gender specific to young men, but they are generally different issues than the lessons to be learned from Miley's situation, in my opinion.

A lot of the questionable things kids do these days wouldn't happen if parents would remember that they are supposed to be PARENTS, not FRIENDS, to their children.
Honestly, I don't think Miley's MySpace pictures are that big a deal. It's nothing every other teenager with a MySpace or Facebook account hasn't done. Like many other people have said, she's become the internet-scandal-du-jour simply because she's famous. Does it make her a bad person? Not really, she's just a normal teenager exploring her sexuality. Her mistake was doing so in a public forum. So okay...maybe she's not such a great choice for a "role-model" for American kids.
I've been teaching in the public schools for seven years, and over the course of time have had three high school students wind up pregnant and goodness knows how many others that COULD have ended up pregnant. Given that on a daily basis I see fifteen-year-olds who have been sexually active for four or five years (!!!), Miley Cyrus jokingly pulling up her shirt is pretty tame.
I think the point here is that parents need to be more responsible for what their kids do. The media bombards kids with sexual images from an early age, which may account for a lot of the problems kids have. Parents can counter this somewhat disturbing trend by simply telling their kids "Yes, Miley posted some lewd pictures on the internet...but that doesn't mean it's okay for you to do it too. Look at the mess she got herself into just because of those pictures. You certainly don't want to have that happen to you." Kids aren't stupid or deaf--they will listen.
I wonder about the wisdom of making role-models out of teen stars. Britney Spears started off squeaky clean--look at her now. Christina Aguilera went from clean to "dirrrrrty" and then back to mostly-respectable "glam." Vanessa Hudgens came off as a bit of a goody-goody until nude pictures of her surfaced. Jamie Lynn Spears was Britney's "good" sister--until she got knocked up at 16. Miley Cyrus started off squeaky clean like Britney, and now she's posting R-rated pictures on MySpace. Need I say more?

Just a note to the author...
I liked your article a lot. I have both daughters and sons. And this issue is VERY important to every parent. There is just one problem...as a parent of sons you should not feel that you are off the hook. As a father of sons, aren't you responsible to teach your sons about how to treat women with respect. And what it means when they are looking at these pictures that are posted... If boys/men aren't looking at, responding to and encouraging this type of photos, would "a majority of the girls" be posting them. NO. They do it for the reaction and attention. Therefore, it is just as important to educate our sons as well as our daughters. Society hasn't changed because of a one-sided decline in morals...

Way back when, I was 15. Unbelievable as it may seem, we had camera's back in the day (1978), and me and my friends knew how to use it! But... fun times for us did not include taking photo's of each other in poses that you would find in Playboy (sans the clothes of course), pouting lips, trying to look sexy.

Seems to me that Miley needs to find a more constructive way to spend her time. I can't imagine that her parent's haven't spoken with her about her image, her reputation, and considering how her fame and fortune (not to mention their own) could be destroyed in a millisecond by doing stupid things such as this.

Maybe Miley just doesn't care about her future earnings at this point. Who knows. But if my 15 yo daughter did this, there would be a serious conversation had, and no more social networking until it sunk in that ANYONE can view the pics that you post. Maybe if she knew how many boys and men were masterbating to those pics, she might rethink doing such things.

Once you are 18, have at it. Hopefully you'll know better by then, but at least you are an adult and can be held responsible for one's actions.

I wonder how much longer Hannah Montana will be produced by Disney. My guess... not much longer.

i completely agree with you! it's only right that she, just like any other teenager, be allowed to explore her own body, self and image. it just so happens that she is famous and has to use trial and error in front of the whole world. All kids, at all different ages, will makes mistakes and do things that we (as adults) wouldn't care for. But the world is changing everyday and let's face it... kids are growing up faster and faster. And in my opinion i was doing things alot worse that the things she is doing when i was 15! and another thing, this is what our messed up society thrives on; the choas in celebrity lives. we wait for someone that is famous to make a mistake and it takes front page, does anyone realize there is a war going on...?

Thank you for this article. As an educator, who is also a user of social network services such as MySpace and Facebook. I often check on my students via school network pages and report any suspect pictures or comments to guidance counselors. I also tell students I check on profiles every so often so be careful what you post.

It is scary the type of information many young people post online. Like the author, I keep constant tabs on my nephew and cousins to make sure nothing is inappropriate. It is up to parents to be aware of what children are doing. If not pictures like Miley's will continue to be the norm.
