Mashable - The Social Media Guide: Mashable, Disqus and UberVU Launch Social Media Comments

  • jyoseph · 9 months ago
Disqus is the bomb. Very cool guys, congrats!

I plugged my Disqus account into friendfeed (which gets posted to twitter) so my comments pretty much follow me everywhere. Now I gotta be more careful not to put my foot in my mouth, as I have done on so many occasions. :P
  • MarkFrost · 9 months ago
Will comments on Digg with replies be threaded properly when viewed in a blog post?
  • mashable · 9 months ago
Not yet, although that would be a great addition. Here's an example of a post that got Dugg:

    http://mashable.com/2009/03/02/skittles-social/

(click "more social comments" to see all the Digg comments beneath the trackbacks and Tweets)
  • mashable · 9 months ago
By the way, since it's gonna take a few mins to go out and find all the social media comments on this post, you can already see examples on every other Mashable post. For example, here's a bunch of Tweets about our Mashable Facebook post:

    http://mashable.com/2009/03/04/follow-mashable-...
  • Sam · 9 months ago
I hate to be a party pooper, but while this is technically a great achievement, it is for the most part utterly useless. I would be far more impressed if you just gave me links to the respective discussions of Digg, Reddit, FF, etc. As it stands now, you're showing me a gigantic list of near-duplicate comments, which I cannot sort, filter, or group. Basically, it's too much information.

I don't understand what you expect me to do with hundreds of tweets that say the same thing... the title of the URL, and a tinyurl. Is it just to show me how many different people have tweeted this page? I cannot even click through to their profile, or see their avatar. Pointless.

Like I mentioned before, a useful version of this would to show me meta-information from each of the networks. How many people have Tweeted this URL, 2 example (unique) tweets, and a link for the rest. How many people have Dugg this story, and commented on it? 2 example comments, and a link for more. Same for all other networks.

There's no point to having a list 500 items big, where my only possible interaction is reading the same thing over and over again. Sure, technically it's "cool" because you've manage to scrape other web services, but seriously, it's not useful.
  • Jannifer · 9 months ago
I agree - there's got to be a non-cluttered way to show all this without seeing tons of people saying the same thing.
  • txtface · 9 months ago
Agree. A little excercise usable for ego tracking but not userfriendly at all. Very messy. Perhaps rather have an optional cloud at the bottom.
  • baratunde · 9 months ago
i very much agree with this comment as well. i'd add that the PRIORITY should have been on measuring, reporting and linking to social media conversation. Then a later option would be to "expand" that report to show the actual data. Do you realize how many garbage comments there are on Digg and YouTube? As a publisher, I'm most interested in the data and ACCESS to the conversation, not the raw data of the conversation dumped on my site
  • Andy Sternberg · 9 months ago
    this is awesome.
  • Colin N. · 9 months ago
It's nice to see a company other than facebook successfully connecting the dots on the social web.
  • Phil Ashman · 9 months ago
Just looking down this list of comments I think it's quite easy to see what the issue is going to be. I'm sure you'll get to select which social media systems to include, so It'll interesting to watch which applications people end up importing into their blog comments. IMHO, for example, I can only hope that most sites using this don't incorporate the Twitter stream. Twitter is not a great platform for commenting, and I think you'd distract from worthwhile comments. Does disqus allow tracking of comments on sites that don't have their comments powered by disqus? Like coComment for instance?
  • magitam · 9 months ago
Nice ;) Look forwatd to seeing what impact this has on people's ability to follow the threads of a conversation ;)
  • mashable · 9 months ago
That's the next challenge. Getting all the comments together is hard enough: think of all the TinyURLs and other short URLs people post to Twitter which need to be found for this to work at even a basic level. Then add in the complexities of working with every other social site. But it's cool to finally take the feature live and see where people want to take it to next.
  • Anya1976 · 9 months ago
wow i will really have to use disqus soo much more, since i barely use it now.
  • MikeonTV · 9 months ago
So I share this page on Twitter and that tweet shows up on this page? Novel idea. What happens when I use TinyURL or one of the billion URL shortening services? Furthermore what happens when this hits the front page of Digg and 200 comments are made on top of all the comments Mashable generates. This is going to be a busy busy noisy place.

All that said. Efffing brilliant man!!!
  • mashable · 9 months ago
It works with TinyURL and the billion other URL shortening services. (Well, maybe not the billionth one, but many of them!)
  • MikeonTV · 9 months ago
Excellent. Cause I have a URL shortening service too. mind adding it? http://mroing.com Regards :D
  • Zee. · 9 months ago
posted this to friendfeed with a couple of comments too about 10 mins ago...lets see how long it takes to appear here. http://friendfeed.com/e/6273dfc5-14b6-4a0f-8ba5...
  • mashable · 9 months ago
While you're waiting, you can see a few FriendFeed comments intermixed with this social media comments thread (click "show all social media comments"):

Hey, Mashable helping Disqus to do the plumbling.... love this...had no idea you were into connecting the pipes...will definitely introduce new rules and discipline for posting
    commentary...kudos...
  • Brian · 9 months ago
Sweet! I can't wait until these features are rolled out to all. Disqus just keeps getting better and better!
  • RJBailey2008 · 9 months ago
This looks pretty cool ('course, I'm kinda biased cuz a Mashable comment of mine showed up in the screenshot in the related Disqus blog post ^_^)
  • Joe Dawson · 9 months ago
Very impressive! Looking forward to the general release of this and congratulations to both Disqus and Mashable on launching this feature :)
  • d3bruts1d · 9 months ago
I've used Disqus for a while now on my blog, and several blogs that I visit and I must say I love their service... not to mention the staff is pretty cool as well. ;)
  • ickledot · 9 months ago
I think this is an excellent idea. Well done to all those who made it possible. I'm mainly writing this to see if what you claim really works. Can you tell?
  • ickledot · 9 months ago
Didn't work first time. Trying again.
  • CEOWORLD Magazine · 9 months ago
    Great feature. All the best.
  • Kol Tregaskes · 9 months ago
I like the sound of this a lot. I'd love to see all the comments from the various services put into one list instead of separated into chunks like here. Is that possible, is that a good thing? Either way I hope I can integrate this into my site soon as I'm currently testing one of the FF Comments plugin atm which works really well. :-)

I'm sure this is very complicated by I'd love to see a way to reply to a Digg comment, for example, and for that reply to sync to digg.com.
  • DrewGneiser · 9 months ago
Love this. Let me know when I can do this on my blog.
  • Scott Lockhart · 9 months ago
This is a brilliant new feature to harness the power of the distributed conversation. Nice work!
  • Wayne Smallman · 9 months ago
Would that be anything like my Social Loop, which proposed much the same thing? Hmm...
  • inspiringdesign · 9 months ago
Disqus is an amazing concept that will help tie conversations together. I can tweet this, which will be picked up in my friend feed and my blog, but then it will post directly to my blog through discus which will be picked up by twitter using twitter tools for wordpress, then other aggregation points i forget about will grab it and re-tweet it, so in leaving one comment, I will potential cause the universe to implode...I may be to integrated...I just need to let discuss and ping.fm do it all for me.
  • BertDecker · 9 months ago
Stretching the envelope again is Mashable. Fascinating connections - look forward to the ultimate solution, and then more...
  • George Millington · 9 months ago
You guys are on to something big here!
  • Jannifer · 9 months ago
Well, I gave it a serious test drive and I give it a FAIL. I commented in FriendFeed, tweeted the link here to twitter, retweeted Mashable, posted it to friendfeed again when it failed the first time and Stumbled it with a review comment (I thought this was going to be brilliant). Not sure how it's selecting what to show, but nothing I did on social media about this post was ever included here.
  • Sid Watal · 9 months ago
Does it also syndicate hosted wordpress blogs? Just curious.
  • Jeff Brown · 9 months ago
Pretty fascinating. I've not used Disqus in the past, but after this post I plan to check it out.
  • danciotu · 9 months ago
You really should. Disqus is a great commenting system

That is what I told to the Intense Debate's crew. See: http://getsatisfaction.com/intensedebate/topics...

    And they didn't get it.
  • Charlotte Hughes · 9 months ago
What a neat idea! Especially when you ad an avatar (like gravatar does)..only I am a little concerned that your success would let you too easily wag the tail of the web 2.0 and higher network
    Charlotte Hughes
  • Charlotte Hughes · 9 months ago
Very impressive if it works, but then you will own the tail of web 2.0
  • Stalyn8 · 9 months ago
    awesome.
  • deuts · 9 months ago
What I would like to see is a site/blog with a dark colored theme using disqus commenting system, and the disqus system looks good on that site. If I've seen one, I believe I can customize my site as well to use disqus...
  • haroldcabezas · 9 months ago
Congratulations....this is a tremendous data-mining breakthrough. Sites like Mashable are going to be able to monitor the Social Media Universe much more thoroughly....this has incredible implications for the future. Amazing.
  • Randy · 9 months ago

That’s some interesting points you have raised. I wonder if its going to stick. Anyways I learnt something new all the same.
  • gabrielpdansby · 7 months ago
The feature is of course very new, and there’s much more that could be done with this novel concept: replying to 3rd party comments on Mashable and having your reply posted back to the 3rd party site, for instance. We’re also still working on adding your Twitter avatars. It’s by no means perfect yet: there are lots of tweaks mocospace.com we’re still working on, and I’m sure you can name many more features you’d like to see.

I just started using Disqus and love it. I really like the fact that you control your own comments and can go and edit them later (I'm a shocker for typos). The ability for people to reply to other peoples comments is also very useful and it helps create sub conversations between readers.

What a great idea. I see Google Wave is working towards a similar type of application. Interesting times ahead.
