Mashable - The Social Media Guide: LUNCHTIME POLL: What’s Your Favorite Music Streaming Service?

  • mattreyes · 3 months ago
Am I the only one who loves Last.fm?
  • John E. Bredehoft (Empoprises) · 3 months ago
No. I'm not sure why last.fm isn't on the top of many lists, and since I haven't used any of the other services (except for Pandora), I'm not sure what the other services offer that last.fm doesn't.
  • mattreyes · 3 months ago
Plus, Last.fm doesn't cut into your songs with ads. AND, it's integrated with your iTunes library. Pandora fails at that.
  • Jim Gardner · 3 months ago
Unike the myth, Pandora opened a box which, this time, contained nothing BUT hope. Awesome concept, awesome service.

It was blip.fm until they embedded video and broke it :(

Now, it's back to Pandora, as always. Sigh. Ads. :[

LaLa if I have something specific, Last.fm if I want to discover recommended tunes.

Pandora is so good I upgraded to Pandora One. It's only $3 a month.

Imeem by far. On demand play, very very few commercials. Build playlists, save play lists, listen to other's play lists... it has it all. Far better access to international music.
  • Name · 3 months ago
KRCL.org ...it plays independent music and plays through any device. No proprietary middle-men here!

As the creator of the lastfmfeeds group on FriendFeed, I think my preference for last.fm can be guessed. Because I live in the US, I also use Pandora upon occasion.

1 - Slacker, 2 - Pandora For my tastes - alternative indie, adult alt (fringe), jazz - Slacker seems to have better variety. I just started listening to Pandora more this week and I think you have to spend too much time trying to train it. At least that's my experience.

Pandora. NO CONTEST. Ads can be a bit of a downer, but aren't too intrusive. Bottom line, nobody's better at the balancing act between playing what you already know and finding a variety of other music that hits the right spot. And best of all, a group's or genre's popularity matters not at all in Pandora's Music Genome system, so you don't get stuck with crap just because it's popular at the moment or just because it's been lumped into some scene or other. Pandora radio really is *only* about the music. I've discovered several bands on Pandora that I would never have found otherwise.

Well, let me mention that when I bought my iPhone , I'd just about given up on music. My wife told me about Pandora, and I found it on the App store. Boy howdy!!!! Okay, ac/dc was playing in Walmart, and out in my car I decide on "Dirty deeds done dirt cheap", and I start listening to it. BTW, I'm a 52 yr old plumber who started out with a compaq 3635 about ten years ago. Believe it or not, I'd never listened to an iPod before my iPhone. I like Pandora better than Slacker because you have more control with Pandora. BTW, because of Pandora, and it's bookmarks, hey, I've bought a lot of music from iTunes that I wouldn't have.

I loved Pandora until they blocked The Netherlands, I loved Last.fm until they required everybody except US, UK & DE to pay for listening, even for music the band I played in put on there for free. Now mostly listen music using Grooveshark, SomaFM or just dutch radio broadcasts that also are streamed.
  • Filipe Martins Amoroso · 3 months ago
It was Pandora. A long, long time ago...before it became unavailable if you were not in the US.

Now it's Grooveshark, and happy with it.
  • Timoluege · 3 months ago
    My favourite: Spotify.

A comment for those, like me, who live in Europe and normally cannot access Pandora or Spotify: There are a couple of VPNs that assign you a UK, or US ip-address so that you can get around the geo-restrictions. What I find ironic about this is: I'm now paying a monthly fee (~ 10 USD) for a VPN - that money could have gone to Pandora or Spotify and I would have been happy to pay it.
