Mashable - The Social Media Guide: Last.fm Kills Off Third Party Mobile Apps

  • Facebook User · 8 months ago
There's only one conclusion for all this: Last.FM seems to be under enormous pressure by RIAA and other licensing holders.
  • zohaibusman · 8 months ago
yes and Techcrunch also mentioned that last.fm is actually handed data to the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) so they could track who’s been listening to the “leaked” U2 album but last.fm totally deny and called this a false rumor.

Will this affect the scrobbling feature in Mobbler? That's what I used it for anyway. As long as mobbler scrobbles the tracks I listen to on my mobile, I don't care much.

My understanding is that Last.fm wont allow Mobbler to stream, but still support the other functions.... though I could be wrong.

in other news Mashable won't be able to pay it's "employees" because all the ads are being removed. Mashable employees cried foul by saying why should we give your our "expertise" and our "work" for free?

Mashable Owners, (But For The Grace Of God There Go I™ Inc.) said, "well you guys always complain about other people asking to be paid for their stuff so why should you get paid?"

    nuff siad!

Well, right after your last post I went ahead and removed it from all of my profiles/sites/etc. I'm an American but I'm living in Asia at the moment. Call me old school, but the idea of paying for radio, despite the fact that it's on the internet, still seems a bit retarded to me. Radio has always been free. Besides, I can't see paying that much for streaming radio when I can turn to ... other means... to listen to music without paying anything.

License holders putting pressure on people like Last.fm isn't going to get people to buy their records. It's just going to piss them off even more and make them more earnestly seek out other free avenues.

Unfortunately for me, the only service that isn't "Currently Unavailable In Your Area" for me is iLike, which is ok, but not that great. Maybe Grooveshark will work but when I loaded it I just got an eternally loading page. Hmm... So few options.

I'm sure some of you work for free in a career that breaks the law every day, but the rest of you are a bunch of babies that have convinced yourselves that getting away with breaking the law means it's legal, and that nobody should be able to make money on their work.

well, maybe they just got tired of ppl ripping their files. Presumably this is made much harder by this. Also, at least they didn't totally turn it off like pandora did. I have heard ppl say they'd pay for pandora access outside of the US, so why not for last.fm? yes it's bad, but with the pressure form rights holders I'm not all that surprised.

Add to this the announcement from MP3.com that they are redirecting all traffic to Last.fm, all artists pages etc to this site. So: no more free music from MP3.com either? This is not clear to me...

The Social Music Revolution. Did I read that right?

Though the fees don't really apply to me, what happens to the friends that I've made in other parts of the world? I'm in a band and we have a Last.fm account and we've made several friends from Australia and Asia. Does that mean that I'm going to lose these contacts if they don't pay the monthly fees?

So much for the Social Revolution thing.

It is great to see that I am not alone in my views of this topic. I feel the
same way. Great work, as always, us.buuuz.com
