The wording for Canada on their product page is they're working on it and hoping it'll be "as soon as possible."
I made a summary file of country-specific info on availability of Kindle and its digital content and also where wireless access is going to be ready Oct. 19.
Nice to see this. I might wait until the price goes down a bit to get one. I hope that Amazon won't delete any Kindle books as they have done in the past.

Dealshouter, I doubt they'll come down much more on the Kindle 2 U.S as they recently dropped from $359 to $299 and now it's $259. HOWEVER, the factory-refurbished & waranteed (1 yr) version is $219 and maybe that will go down.
Europe et al won't have the experimental web browser which is 24/7 free in the U.S. and won't likely be copied in that feature by the other companies who are charging more.
Great move Amazon. lots of haters out there, but the fact is Amazon is a great company ran by smart people with a awesome product.

ontheotherhand, Amazon has a 30-day refund policy. You can call them at 866-321-8851 to exchange it for a new one or possibly get a credit, which they sometimes do for the 30 days.
If not, you return it and later buy one for whatever the price is at the time.
MANY thanks for the info and the telephone number. I talked at length with a guy who tried mightily to help me. Amazon will give you a credit for the difference between a Kindle 1 and a Kindle 2 IF you purchased it between September 6 and October 6. Alas, mine was a week too early.
I live in Vermont and the Kindle 1 Sprint wireless doesn't work here. I tried arguing that I could buy much more from Amazon if I had the AT&T wireless in a Kindle 2, but they didn't go for it. But they did say I can sell my Kindle (warehousedeals.com is one site to try), unregister it and buy a new Kindle 2. Best idea they could come up with. They also don't know when a DX 2 will come out with the AT&T global coverage.

People have different experiences with different customer reps - some will be a bit more flexible, so if you want to, you can try another one tomorrow. Ask to speak to the supervisor too if it's 'by the book.' I remember when they've given partial credits when people were past the deadline but close to it.

It's important to note that several books (including Dan Browns latest bestseller) isn't available internationally. And you cannot use it to browse the internet incl. reading (or subscribing) blogs.
So you can get the hardware, but due to geo-restricted publishing rights, you cannot get the good books.

My God! I rushed into this post thinking the price cut would be around $100 or more. Alas! its just a few quids off. Its still expensive. My dream is the day when it would hit below $200 or more. I run a blog that locates and publishes price cuts and discounts, so this would be great news for me.

There are far more people abroad interested in the Kindle then they are US residents in need of an international connection, and I am one of them, so no: I'd rather have a 200€ device that only work in the EU. If you want a tour-guide, iPhone is a much more appropriate device.

For all the PR they've done today, you'd think Amazon would enable international shipping on the Kindle. Alas, I've just tried to pre-order and was told that I can't get the product in my location. Ridiculous.

Unlike hardcover books, there are country/border contracts with publishers that are really complex and the publishers hold the power there with e-books. That has to be worked out as well as pricing to Amazon & ultimately customers, from a multitude of wireless providers, so that's no doubt a lot of work.
Makes sense for a price drop considering the expanded availability. The timing is a surprise given the recent introduction -- Amazon could've gained more traction with a drop closer to the holidays, say November or just before Thanksgiving. Still cool response on Amazon's part to immediate consumer fence-sitting. Best of luck to AMZN.

My dear wife, the technophobe, who will not touch a computer, who just got dragged into her first cell phone... Loves reading. Books. She saw an ad for Sony's book reader. I showed her the info on Kindle. She wants one more than anything. This might make it a more likely Christmas gift.

I was interested when the kindle first came out, especially since you can also subscribe and read newspapers and book which I can read while on the train and maybe use instead of heavy school textbooks, but the price was too expensive and cost as much or more than a netbook. Now, I am using a palm pre and I can pretty much do the same thing, and browse the net. I would probably buy it if it was closer to $150 rather than $300 which is about $100 more than an inexpensive netbook that would have more features. I would also consider more if it carried most of the textbooks that it has in the Amazon store. I don't think it has any of my engineering textbooks, but it would be nice so i would not have to carry them everywhere and the Amazon store is usually cheaper than my local university textbook store.

Amazon is getting close to making Kindle the iPod of books. I was hesitant to try it but started using it when I needed a reference at a conference and could not find it on the web. It is an incredible device and one that I use all the time. I think Amazon will try to fit the price similar to iPod since that price range works with the demographic they are after. I think they can improve their market share at $199 price range (starting price for iPhone).

I'm kind of on the fence on this one really. I'd wait a few years for the tech to really mature, the kindle's still fairly new in my eyes so I'm perfectly happy to wait. The pricing is still far too high in my oppinion.

I love the idea of Kindle. As an avid reader, I've long run out of room to store all my books and this seems a great solution. But even at the lower price, I'm not quite ready to run out and buy one. I'm hoping for even lower prices.

Not enough for me. I like the ereader idea...in fact i read on the iphone all the time using the kindle app. Yes, i would like a larger screen...but 250 still seems extraordinarily high for something that only allows you to read books. The apple tablet will be color and although 3 or 4 times the price, its functionality will far surpass todays kindle. If i were amazon, and i had a black and white reader....with no touchscreen (seriously, why is there a full time keyboard on this thing...it hogs room and looks terrible for 2nd gen), i would price it at whatever the cost is to make and sell the thing...and make the money on the back end with content. I would get this reader in as many hands as possible...and have as many people as possible buying ebooks through kindle. Kind of like the video game wars...price the playstation at a level not much more than its cost and make the money on the games or in kindles case, the books. Don't get me wrong, i love AMAZON, and i think they've done great with the original kindle. And the whole 3g without paying and download a book anywhere is fantastic...BUT as great as the package is....i don't see consumers buying a lot of these almost outdated devices until they are under 100 dollars (unless a color screen, and more functionality is assumed).
