You can get the main advantages of the Kindle without the Kindle. Much of the discussion of the Kindle saying that it prevents eyestrain is hype -- maybe some people are abnormally sensitive to reading on computers, but many, many people read for hours on computers already. If you have a laptop, you really don't need a Kindle now, though it is nice to have. Students are sometimes dealing with very difficult financial situations and spending hundreds of dollars for a Kindle is not in the picture. I have a Kindle, yet I often read my Kindle books on my Netbook instead. Pictures, graphs and charts are much nicer on the laptop, and even some color is available.

Re: Kindle for PC Now Available for Free

I am glad that Kindle has come out with the PC version. It would really be nice if the PC version could highlight and annotate. Please include that in your next update.

Re: Kindle for PC Now Available for Free

--Unrelated to the subject matter of the article--
Barb completely misused the term agnostic! A more correct term, if you are going to completely misuse a term describing a person’s religious beliefs, is platform-Gnostic strategy; this means something more like platform-knowing strategy. When using the term agnostic it is saying platform-unknowable strategy, which is the complete opposite of what the author was going for. Phrases like that further feed the large misconception that agnostic means “on the fence” or “okay with all” in terms of religion, which it doesn’t mean that at all. So, Barb could have said that before the Kindle was a platform-Christian strategy, meaning the strategy was dedicated to only one platform. But of course, who in their right mind would say that if they don’t want to offend anybody? My point exactly.

Re: Kindle for PC Now Available for Free

dowloaded PC version but not getting it to sync with my actual Kindle - WTF?? As I read on my PC version, ahead of my Kindle version, the Kindle doesn't seem to know that???

Re: Kindle for PC Now Available for Free

The format of the book might be dependent on the technology. I'm not familiar with what your talking about, but it might be the case that EPUB is useful for tablet devices but not useful for "eink" devices. Making the Apple device not comparable to the Amazon device.

Re: Kindle for PC Now Available for Free

Kindle would succeed in making a huge market as it digs into the PC market place especially with such a FREE app http://thetechnologycafe.co...

Re: Kindle for PC Now Available for Free

you forgot to mention it's only available for US residents for some reason, i can't figure why canadians aren't able to DL the pc version?

Re: Kindle for PC Now Available for Free

I love the Kindle iPhone/iPod app. I'm anxious to try the PC app and am DYING for them to come out with the Mac app!!!

Re: Kindle for PC Now Available for Free

I am checking it out right now and highlight/annotation capability would REALLY help!

Re: Kindle for PC Now Available for Free

I use the iphone Kindle app and my Kindle 2 interchangeably -- especially useful since the iphone is backlit. I think being able to go between devices easily is really important -- even if I only have 10 minutes & left my Kindle at home, I can still get some quality reading time in. But is it just a matter of time before the proprietary file format goes away?

Re: Kindle for PC Now Available for Free

Are any textbooks available on the Kindle?
