Twitter is like a breath of fresh air on the Social Media scene. I have been on it for just a few weeks now and I have met several interesting people. It is a platform to network with people you would like to meet in real life.

Considering Daniel Tumiwa himself is a known person (founder of MTV indonesia, non-celeb mediapersonality) and is followed - albeit small in number - by mostly media personalities, I'd say the news *did* travel faster than CNN. CNN did not air the news until two hours after the event (7.51 a.m. GMT+7 - Daniel's tweet was exactly at the moment it happened). Local TV (Metro TV), aired it first as breaking news FOUR minutes after the next bomb exploded (7.54). Most of MetroTV's footage were from cellphone cameras. Their camera crew arrived by 8.30, and they aired live footages ever since.

So yes, twitter is faster than CNN. Sorry, CNN.

@Jarmla1981 CNN does read Twitter and spread the news from it afterwards. But yeah, @DanielTumiwa tweet was not the first one I saw yesterday (nor for anyone else who did NOT follow him). I live in the (supposedly) beautiful & peaceful Bali, Indonesia. I'm sad that this is happening again to my beloved country...

Once again, terrorists have killed and wounded innocent people. My sympathies to the victims of these tragic attacks and their families. The amazing about people using Twitter to report this kind of happenings is that we realize we don't depend on big media corporations to get to know about what is going on out there. It is great to be able to hear straight from the sources, it gives us a broader sense of reality and humanity.

I just wonder why so much fanfare for Twitter, when it comes to breaking the news? Are not other Social Media sites are able to report the news as well, at times even before Twitter?

I got an update on my Facebook profile about this 6 hours ago, from a boy who lives in Indonesia. Which by my calculation beets the Twitter update by one hour - that is looking at the time stamp of the comments on Mashable and the Twitter comment. I am just approximating it, because I did not write this post.

But what I am saying new information can break out on different network, not just Twitter.

All this Twitter talk, makes me wonder if Twitter is becoming the Mass Media!
Personally, I take mass media with a grain of salt. ;-)

I wonder if any kind of "flagging" system -- to let people know that information in a particular tweet is not verified -- would help. There are great sites, like @ckanal's Breaking Tweets, that help to verify and pull together relevant tweets, but there is nothing to alert people watching "raw" Twitter feed.

The good thing is, oftentimes tweets that dispel rumors often travel as quickly as the rumors themselves. Viral messages spread more quickly when initially sent by respected users, so it would be great for those with large followings to help spread the word when false information is spread.

So Twitter user Daniel Tumiwa published this first, but how many people saw his tweet in anything like real time? I assume no one knew he was first until tweets were analyzed afterward.

Is Twitter really faster than CNN? Doesn't it take a while until there are enough tweets to confirm that something actually did happen, and it's not just a hoax? Does CNN watch Twitter, and then - let's assume - call up their own sources in e.g. Jakarta to get the story?

I'm just trying to understand the real-world process that happens between some unknown person with 12 followers tapping out a tweet -- and then people claiming that Twitter scooped CNN...

Any insight?

As some people here already mentioned, you can spread rumors, panic and of course you can also spread lies and false information. As with all power, twitter can be used or misused.

Whether u like it or not , web 2.0 has come into our lives in a big way. MJ case was an example, a very good examle really. This is another, but there will be more, but remember although we dont think (if something big like this happens), social media is already governing us and our communcaitons.

Apart of giving us real-time reports from the site, twitter can also be mistakenly used as to spread false-rumours. In this case about another explosion at Muara Angke, which doesnt have anything to do with the first 2 explosions other than a beat-up minitruck got overheated. Fortunately no one got hurt on that false alarm.

I was actually nearby the bombing site around 8am local time. Got stuck for a while in a traffic because Police is blocking all access to Mega Kuningan area, props on the quick response for local police.

So far I have already checked all my relatives working/living in Mega Kuningan area are doing just fine, Alhamdulillah. Lastly, my deep condolences to all the bombing victims and their families, Inna Lillahi wa Inna Illahi Raji'un.
