I'm waiting for the day when Spotify will replace iTunes
  • Dan Buell · 3 months ago
    Keep waiting...

Additionally, if you listen to more than a coupla hundred different tracks an year, then Spotify paid membership is way better than buying those tracks from iTunes.

I already use Spotify more than I use iTunes. At work I don't have any music program installed apart from Spotify and at home I tend to use iTunes only for the stuff that isn't on Spotify - like live bootlegs, and rare remixes, etc. Get that onto Spotify and I see the reasons to use iTunes (or similar) dropping.

iTunes continues to add great features but I still won't be using it until Apple gets the Windows memory footprint under several hundred MB of RAM. It's ridiculous.

Thanks for this great post! Very informative.

I'm thinking Apple can be the premiere connector of users to social media with its hardware, software, and Apps Store.
  • WallMountedHDD · 3 months ago
No, you think you can advertise your shit.

I'm shocked Apple haven't integrated this kind of thing sooner, it can only increase sales for them! Also Pranay, I highly doubt Spotify will ever replace iTunes lol

This is just like sharethis.com or addthis.com. It's used on The Roasterie's site as well, theroasterie.com, to share coffee, tea and merch. I'm surprised, especially with all the hype, that Apple didn't produce more. You're probably right though - if this works well for them, we can probably expect more.

How about if there were a paid service (depending on music library size) that would host your library so that you could have access, anywhere anytime and essentially replace last.fm. Wrap your mind around that.

    You mean like mp3tunes? http://mp3tunes.com/

You could even get social with it by integrating the bad ass features of last.fm, such as song suggestion and genre specific stations. You could almost create a completely new social network based upon the music that you have in your library. Another cool feature that would be good for iTunes is something like what Songbird does and that is the concert notifier. You input your geographic location and willingness to travel, could even be for each band (ie I would drive 100 miles to see Jason Mraz, whereas I would drive 400 miles to see NOFX) and integrate notifiers into your network.

Wow - I love the ideas of (1) remote access to iTunes, (2) concert notifier, and (3) streaming radio (i.e., cutting into last.fm/pandora market share). Creating a new social network gives me pause (there are already too many out there, and this seems to diverge from Apple's core competencies). But I think that you could have 1, 2 and 3 without a social network.

So I can't tweet from my library/playlist, rather I go to the iTMS and tweet/share from there? If so, I guess it's a nice feature, but one I won't take the extra effort to use. Why is it better than how I tweet music today? And I wouldn't feel right selling compressed, DRM music on Apple's behalf to my friends.

    Crass, boring, and spammy.
  • deestewart · 3 months ago
    Hm, I think it's a good starting point. I haven't really tried/used it yet.

Last.fm integration and reviews shared to social networking profiles. I would like to see iTunes become a social network but I doubt that will materialise!

I love iTunes and technology is going to continue to progress with different social media networks
  • barringtonarch · 3 months ago
    it's a good move & i'd say we'll see more of it.
  • SebaNob · 3 months ago
Apple support Twitter, Facebook, Last.fm, or Apple want Twitter, Facebook, Last.fm to support him? For these business giant (at least not so small), all about the deal.
OK, as a consumer and a user, I just want all these people make the situation easy.

corporations or individuals should gift a random iTunes credit by Twitter - and the first clicker gets the credit . . .

This might be more useful if it actually shortened the URLs but since iTunes store ZRLs are extremely long it fills up the whole tweet…!?
Maybe I'm missing something though, since the screenshot in this article features a shortened URL -- how did you get this…? Is there some hidden feature or did you have to do it manually…? If so, that's too much of a hassle, making the feature worthless…

eMusic.com has been letting people share purchases and recommendations on Facebook for a while. They've actually done a really good job with the integration. Easier to pump features into the social world when you're a 2nd tier player compared to Apple.

no playlist integration... /me disappointed :(
  • Daniele Dellafiore · 2 months ago
Well.. does not seem to me such a big new thing or what an experiment...On Songbird is already possible since a year or so...
  • brent · 2 months ago
The tweet post looks a bit boring. it would be much nicer if we can tweet what's currently playing on our playlist, then have that link to the iTunes store.
  • ognjentodic · 2 months ago
How about publishing Top Played songs as well as Playlists via Facebook app. Utilizing FB Connect for social recommendations (combination of collaborative filtering taking into account your social graph)... Sharing/posting interesting snippets of the song (could be tricky from the legal angle, with labels not being wiling to experiment)...

I definitely think that sharing feature needs to be tied to the action of consuming music, not browsing/buying in the iTunes store.

Also, sharing reviews in the iTuness Store (this is not only for the music, but anything available through the store). If I reviewed an app I like, it would be nice that my review is pushed to Facebook with the link to the app in iTunes store.

But how do you link to a song that you already own (but is available from iTunes)? I can't see how to do this...
