Got the carrier update via iTunes, rebooted phone (twice), but no indication MMS options so far. I have a 2G. Did I miss something?
  • Bryan Hauer · 2 months ago
You have to connect to iTunes, download carrier update & sync, then turn on MMS. Settings --> Messages. You might then have to restart. Then it will show up, but remember the other person has to have it turned on as well or have another phone that's had it since 2002 :)
  • bradtx77 · 2 months ago
I don't see those options in Settings --> Messages. Still the same screen as before the update. I tried iTunes again to check for updates and it says there are no new updates.
  • Bryan Hauer · 2 months ago
Ahhh yeah. Sorry I missed that you did say 2G iPhone. As others stated only for 3G and 3GS.
  • Sarva · 2 months ago
I have 3G 3.1 and I did the update, sync, restart and there is no option in settings to turn on MMS. Does not appear I can send pics
  • Sarah Van Elzen · 2 months ago
I have 3G 3.1 and I did the update, sync, restart and there is no option in settings to turn on MMS. Does not appear I can send pics
  • Jamie Deich · 2 months ago
Did you get the txt from AT&T yet? They're doing it in waves. The txt will tell you when it's ready for yours.
  • Name · 2 months ago
    No worky for 2g!
  • Fudge · 2 months ago
MMS will NOT work on 2G iPhones. Only 3G and 3GS.
  • bradtx77 · 2 months ago
I was afraid of that being the case. More ways for AT&T to phase out older models and get more money, I suppose.
  • Andre G. · 2 months ago
if by AT&T you mean Apple, then yes.
  • Caleb · 2 months ago
The hardware in a 2G cant process mms messages. They have only said that 10,000 times. Apple can do no wrong in my eyes
  • bradtx77 · 2 months ago
Sorry to disagree, Caleb, but a jailbroken 2G phone has the ability to send MMS. So the hardware can process it.
  • wnxoutlander · 2 months ago
    EPIC FAIL CALEB
  • Joe · 2 months ago
    it's only for 3g and 3gs phones sorry. : (
  • LOKIAOD · 2 months ago
on the apple website it says you have to have a 3g or later
  • LOKIAOD · 2 months ago
You need a 3g or later phone to use mms per apple website
  • JasonCWms · 2 months ago
I can send pictures, but for some reason I cannot receive
  • Janis Kay · 2 months ago
Same for me. Send but not receive :( And I used both addresses txt and mms to test
  • Josh Hofer · 2 months ago
Can someone test something for me since I can't yet? With the famous carrier hack, whenever I try to send an SMS to a few people at the same time... it changes the caption to "Group MMS" and when people get the message, they are forced to login to AT&T's website like the old days to view a picture/text - when they view it, it's my text message. It's annoying.

Can someone test this for me with the official carrier file? Send a quick SMS by typing in at least two peoples names - don't use the blue plus sign, because that method seems to work for me with the carrier hack, it's just horribly annoying! haha
  • Matt Carrier · 2 months ago
Yup it is here....finally, again a lot of hype for absolutely nothing. Do we know what else 5.5 carrier file opens up on the iPhone?
  • Jay · 2 months ago
My iPhone and AT&T already do not work in Boulder. I'm scared!!!
  • CantonDog · 2 months ago
Am I the only one who thinks it's lame that you have to sync with iTunes to get the update? Maybe that's because I won't be able to sync for a few days...but it's still lame ;-)
  • wavemike · 2 months ago
Doesn't work on 3.0 or 3.0.1...they make you upgrade to 3.1 which is BS. I'm JB and i don't want to upgrade to 3.1. Apple and AT&T have kept me waiting for over two years already, so I'll wait.
  • squares · 2 months ago
I'm using JB 3.0.1 and manually installed the carrier update yesterday as outlined here: http://www.cultofmac.com/how-to-get-mms-on-your...

as a side note... doing it this way also enables tethering in the phone settings... not sure if that's in the official update or not.
  • Kristen E. Smith · 2 months ago
    it is DEFINITELY working
  • Fudge · 2 months ago
Downloaded update, and still getting red ! when sending. Network already down?
  • phreakhead · 2 months ago
So sad! Apple just released this "feature" when my little Razor phone has been able send picture and video messages for years! And the iPhone still doesn't even support video! Can't wait to get a Gphone...
  • nic · 2 months ago
Hooray for you for having a phone that had a feature that the iPhone did not have!!!!
  • Landon · 2 months ago
The iPhone 3GS has video, are you living under a rock? The quality of the photos are a little bit better than those of a Razor.
  • Dan · 2 months ago
    WORKS FOR ME!!!
  • Name · 2 months ago
it's still a shame when they charge you to receive a message...
  • Todd Albert · 2 months ago
Too bad us original iPhone users won't have this option. I don't mind buying the new hardware, but I don't want to commit myself to AT&T for two more years.
  • iPhonetech · 2 months ago
It wouldn't make a diffrence if you started your contract over again because you just said it yourself, "I don't mind buying the new hardware". You are probably going to still be with at&t for two more years with the first genration iPhone, as if you bought a new iphone. So why not buy one?
  • Todd Albert · 2 months ago
Because, if I can use my iPhone, or an iPhone 3G(s) on a more reliable network, like Verizon's, I will. When my contract is up, I'll probably unlock my phone and switch. I'll give up visual voicemail for a signal any day! Wouldn't you?
  • adambeam · 2 months ago
What's the difference between MMS and the free MMS-like apps available through the app store? I use Picfree to send picture messages. It works pretty well and doesn't cost anything (other than the $1.99 it cost to buy it)
  • Joel Vincent · 2 months ago
    Awesome! Multi-media sexting, here I come! ;-)
  • Robert · 2 months ago
Thanks achernow, I applied the update and was about to take a nutty over the lack of the new setting... I was in the process of powering down when I read your post. File under >whew!<
  • emoqix · 2 months ago
I got it now. now, I can send out those blackmail pictures! LOL
  • coreymac · 2 months ago
Works beautifully so far. If it didn't take so long in the first place, I might actually say I'm impressed. Better late than never, though!
  • adrinkit · 2 months ago
Woosh ! It's like being in 2003 again.
  • bhartzer · 2 months ago
I never thought I would see Spongebob on Mashable.
  • Janis Kay · 2 months ago
Update, sync, reboot, turned on new settings, sent small jpg, mes. shows up different, but no photo. #FAIL
  • çiçekçi · 2 months ago
Thank you for sharing client for me was very useful to you now send flowers pictures mms le
  • Denver Photographer · 2 months ago
So I'm confused, can you send MMS' to iPhones that don't have MMS enabled? Are there any other phones out there that don't have MMS?
  • anneonymity · 2 months ago
alas, i can finally send all those hilarious photos i took last winter... too bad it takes like 10 minutes to receive MMS. oh well, just glad to finally be able to utilize this seemingly primitive service on my supposedly state-of-the-art device.
  • Andy Anderson · 2 months ago
It's working. My question is: will ATT calls be working now that the already strained network is going to have to support this feature...The data sumos are gathering around the all you can eat buffet.
  • Becky · 2 months ago
I have an iphone 3G and I ran the update. I can't get the MMS to work. I went to Setting and then to Messages but had no option to turn on or off MMS. I have rebooted my phone. Trying now to redo the update in case I did something wrong. Suggestions??
  • David · 2 months ago
says my itunes is updated to 9.0.1 and my phone is 3.1, it won't update any further
  • therev5275 · 2 months ago
Sending MMS from my iphone seems to work just fine. However, MMS I receive has the following... "one or more of the message components have been deleted by MMS Adaptation. Either the message was too large or the components were unsuitable for your terminal."

What kind of BS is that.
  • Name · 2 months ago
Well, the download went well. I didn't see where it said to reboot but I did anyway. It added the little camera icon and I was able to attach photos. I sent out test photos to friends on other networks to test it. I don't see where you can send anything but photos, however, on the 3G.
  • Ceasar · 2 months ago
I connected my iphone clicked update and it says i have the new version already but no mms. Whats the problem?
  • starsky64 · 2 months ago

  • kyle · 2 months ago
i can send picture message but cant receive them any reason why
  • WashingtonState · 2 months ago
I just downloaded the new MMS update and everything is working great! Sending pictures and videos only takes about 1 second longer (which is expected for larger files) to send than a normal text message. Thus far the update does not seem to be bogging down AT&T's network.
  • avilesr60 · 2 months ago
Works Great, Just got it!!!!! YYYEEAAAHHH!!!!!
  • mike... · 2 months ago
completely lame...I paid $500 for a new iphone when they came out, and have watched everyone else get the 3G or 3Gs for cheaper, and it is a much better phone... I have paid countless dollars to AT&T...now I am completely shut-down on the new MMS feature...THIS SUCKS!
  • Andy Mac · 2 months ago
It's working for me in Eugene, Oregon. Checked for update in iTunes and rebooted the phone. Worked like a charm.
  • coquito · 2 months ago
Nope not working for me or my friends, sooo annoying.
  • Janis Kay · 2 months ago
2 hrs later it's working now in both sending and receiving photos, however a discovery - note - I have my own contact info in my iPhone - I found if I send from my iMac using the correct mms address, due to it being in my contacts, a photo won't appear in message. If I use an email address not in my phone to send from iMac to iPhone it works! Weird.
  • rock2d2@hotmail.com · 2 months ago

sorry I am a dummy.....can I updat from my phone...or do I need to do it from iTunes? Help?
  • Todd Albert · 2 months ago
Ever notice the E on your iPhone when you're on the Edge (2G) network? Not that I am living in rural Tennessee, my phone sometimes shows O. I asked Apple about this. It means that I am connected to an old 1G network. I didn't know that those still existed. The service here is so spotty, I doubt I'd be able to send an MSS even if I had a 3G phone.
  • Tea Dough · 2 months ago
Works flawlessly here. tested pictures and videos. hopefully no future issues.
  • JUDY · 2 months ago
It is NOT working for me.. I rebooted and it seemed to work but will NOT fully send and then has red exclamation next to message!! Please help!
  • Tea Dough · 2 months ago
Again, works great. Tested both pictures and videos.
  • ScBookworm · 2 months ago
I got the update but no MMS in my area yet i guess. Near Charlotte, NC
  • eilsmi · 2 months ago
Got it. Tried to send. Dreaded red !
  • Michael Hong · 2 months ago
http://www.cellularmaps.com/3g_compare.shtml Latest 3G coverage shows that AT&T is significantly lagged behind Verizon wireless coverage. You can download or upgrade all your wnat but you better hope that your friends are in the same network.
  • JUDY · 2 months ago
OK, I rebooted again and it is now working! Yay!
  • jules1213 · 2 months ago
I logged in to Itunes, updated my Iphone 3Gs, turned it completely off and then back on. I am not able to receive pictures...but when I try to send them it keeps telling me it FAILED ;( ;( Sad day, I looked at all my settings for MMS and it looks like they are correct...any ideas?
  • JUDY · 2 months ago
I would just keep trying and reboot again!
  • Rico · 2 months ago
if anyone is having the problems of not being able to send but receive or vice versa, simply go to Settings -> General -> Reset -> Reset Network Settings. This will not delete any data simply reset the carrier information to the default with the new update given today. Good luck.
  • jules1213 · 2 months ago
I updated my Iphone 3GS and turned it completely off, then on. All my settings for MMS look like they are correct. I am able to receive pics...but not send ;( It keeps telling me it failed with a red exclamation point ;9( ANY ideas ??
