Mashable - The Social Media Guide: Is Stripe Generator a Joke?

  • alex · 2 years ago
My reaction was just the same when I first saw this. But I found myself using it just a day later. Guilty.
  • Pete Cashmore · 2 years ago
    alex,

    Cool. When did it launch?
  • Allen Stern · 2 years ago
This has been live a while. I only know that because I played with it yesterday on a bookmark I already had which means at least a month.

But its pretty dang well put together!
  • Rey Bango · 2 years ago
@Pete: So someone offers a tool that helps build some type of "Web 2.0" feature and that's bad in some way?
  • Passer By · 2 years ago
I'm 100% sure this is not ajax. It is most likely simply driven by javascript. We looked and don't see any headers and no posts/get sent to the server and there is no response received from the server. These days any application is dubbed an ajax application. Did anyone else notice the same?
  • Pete Cashmore · 2 years ago
    Passer By,

Is that comment written in English, or ajax? ;)

Hehe. I can't talk: I'm always saying that javascript is "ajaxy".
  • Rick Garcia · 2 years ago
Believe it or not, I was actually looking for one of these! 10,000 peoples trash is one person's gold. Thanks!
  • Pete Cashmore · 2 years ago
Haha. I just knew everyone would disagree. OK I give in, stripes rock! ;)
  • Pete Cashmore · 2 years ago
    Rey,

It's just a very cliched design. When you've seen as many "Web 2.0" sites as I have, you start to find the rounded corners, reflections under images and buzzwords like "ajax" all fairly amusing.
  • Allen · 2 years ago
C'mon Pete - this site is dope - it's the mack daddy - and Yahoo will buy it for $800 million.

I will say that no matter what, I am not sharing my stripe orientation.
  • Pete Cashmore · 2 years ago
    Allen,

Yeah, don't do it! They will use that stripe orientation to serve up targeted ads!

What's more, Yahoo will try to merge your Stripe Generator account with your Yahoo account, thus combining two distinct facets of your personality which should never be brought together.

On the upside, they're gonna add the option to export your stripes to Flickr. Neat, huh? ;)
  • Allen Stern · 2 years ago
I can't wait Pete. I will not work or pack until I know this has been completed.

Maybe this site is like a front door to something else - like on Prison Break. Maybe the right combination of stripes unlocks the door to something else?

    HRM! makes ya wonder :)
  • Jackson · 2 years ago
Why the need for the "Beta" tag, seriously. Just to fit the Web 2.0 theme?
  • Rey Bango · 2 years ago
@Pete: Come now Pete. Its "Web 2.0"-ish. Isn't that what Mashable is all about. I mean you don't want me to send you a rotating animated email .gif icon do you? I will do it and then you'll wish you had never made fun of the poor Web 2.0 stripe generator! ;o)
  • Pete Cashmore · 2 years ago
    Rey,

    I dare ya! :P
  • Rey Bango · 2 years ago
    @Pete: You asked for it!:

    http://www.reybango.com/mashable/

    LOL!
  • Pete Cashmore · 2 years ago
    Gaah! My eyes!!!
  • Pete Cashmore · 2 years ago
Seriously, I don't think I've ever seen so many animated gifs on one page.

    Stripe Generator rocks! ;)
  • jason carlin · 2 years ago
Creating stripes in illustrator and photoshop is actually quite a pain in the ass. Then, pixel pushing until you've defined a tile and saving it as a pattern (or tiling the hard way) is more work than it should be.

Stripe Generator enables a designer to see stripes materialize in any configuration imaginable in a matter of seconds. She is therefore able to view a more patterns in action in the same amount of time, hopefully improving her odds of making a good decision.

I'm not saying that Stripe Generator is something I'll use in the future, but it certainly doesn't deserve to be lambasted on your blog as an unimaginably stupid idea.

I think you may want to be a bit more responsible with your criticisms and save them for people who have truly earned them.
  • Rey Bango · 2 years ago
@Pete: So whadda ya think, can I get VC funding? Its got the reflective logo, the beta badge, rounded corners, and it even has the word "Pickr" (no "e") at the end.
  • Allen Stern · 2 years ago
dude - on that page you need the little construction worker digging dirt with the coming soon msg

    the worst absolute graphic EVER.
  • Diego · 2 years ago
It's a useful tiny app for designers who does not start their mockup in photoshop, instead use XHTML and CSS.

Can't see what's your problem with it...
  • Rey Bango · 2 years ago
@Allen: You asked for it. Done!
  • Klaus Hartl · 2 years ago
Gosh, Rey, where'd you get all these gifs?
  • Rey Bango · 2 years ago
@Klaus: I plead the 5th and cannot reveal my sources! :o)
  • Daniel Rust · 2 years ago
Under Construction is to Web 1.0, as Beta is to Web 2.0
  • bunnyhero · 2 years ago
heh, fun. i'm surprised the preview doesn't update in real time, though. maybe in the next version?
  • Dillon Thomas · 2 years ago
Having to refresh the preview takes too much time. It should refresh automatically when you make a change. Nice design though.
  • Victor · 2 years ago
yesi tried that too but its such a hassle to make it work on your website. toke me hours to do it but i must say its create a nice stripe and in blends very well. Will make another stripe for my new website
  • Dog · 2 years ago
This got to be a joke yet it's pretty innovative.
  • momo · 2 years ago
and what did u do besides this lousy article ?
  • tom watson · 1 year ago
    you're a dip$hit, 'Peter.'

It's not so difficult to make stripes, but it's time consuming. This is a valuable time saving tool for anyone who builds websites, whether or not that site can or should be characterized as "Web 2.0."

Apart from having one of the worst first names in the history of mankind, you clearly don't have anything too important going on. You can spend hours building tileable stripes by hand, and writing unfunny, not-so-helpful negative articles. I'm able to respond to this trainwreck of an 'article' because i saved a lot of time today thanks to the wonderful Stripe Generator tool.

    Enjoy your terrible name,

    tom
  • CK · 1 year ago
agree with tom. really weak blog post. I don't consider myself to be some "web 2.0" designer but there are times when I use stripes...and they can be a pain in the ass to create manually...

i think its a great, free tool that I use often
  • vai_ron · 1 year ago
thats cool although stripes a very easy to make, just create a pattern that can repeat seamlessly and thats it
  • Paul · 4 months ago
Could you tell more about animated stripes generators. I looking for it
