Why in the world would someone want to jailbreak their iPod Touch? There are 15,000 apps in the iTunes Store and many of them are free. Who wants to go to the trouble of downloading jailbroken apps to put on their jailbroken iPod touch. Doesn't make sense unless I am missing something. Can you elaborate?

This sounds great! Also, Steve many users choose to jailbreak their ipod so that they are able to access other apps not released by Apple. For example: mxTube (I think thats what its called) which allows you to download videos off youtube so that you have them at your finger tips.

Steve, jailbreaking an iPod Touch allows you to customize it far more than you normally can, and get many applications that can do what an unjailbroken iPod cant. I'm personally looking forward to it because you can only benefit from this; there is absolutely no downfall to jailbreaking it.
The worst thing that can happen is you break your iPod by dropping it or scratching it, and have to send it in. You would have to restore it back to it's original state, which takes less than 10 minutes for warranty sake.
Honestly, it's more like getting a plugin for Windows Media Player.

Steve that's not true Microsoft does not bug XP for miscellaneous software, if you looked at my XP you wouldn't even know it's windows. There is no such thing as a brick killswitch, it is just a piece of firmware that indicates that your ipod is unusable. Kind of like when windows becomes unusable, all you see is a blue screen. The Kernel holds that picture and puts it on only if there is a hardware isse caused by the user. In other terms, if you open your ipod and don't put it back together (on other ipods you'll see the sad face). and to be honest with you, since you don't know what you are talking about, I would recommend you not posting dumb responses to people who know what they are talking about. You think that apps are the same as jailbreaking ... maybe you should punch yourself until it makes sense.

@steve : yes you can still download apps from the appstore, and yes apple has something called "kill switch" but when you jailbreak your device you also gain the ability to turn off that feature ( among others )
Why to jailbreak? there is no reason in the world why one should NOT jailbreak this device. You can find top 10 lists of reasons why you should jailbreak your iPhone/Touch everywhere.
But there is one reason nobody seems to talk about. Let's put it this way : you find an app that you think it suits your needs. the app costs $10+. You buy the app, you sync it and after testing it for like 10 minutes you realize its not really what you were looking for. What do you do? When you have a jailbroken device, you can have that app for free.
Are you stealing? Well that depends on your common-sense. I have this on my blog and i always say this : "If an app suits you, buy the app."
One more reason to jailbreak this device : It's YOUR iPhone/Touch , make it personal. ( i hope you understand what im saying :) )

all you have to do after downloading the jailbreaking program is just connecting ur ipod to the pc and pushing the button "next" and w8t until it says Jailbroken. even apes can do that (search it on utube)
10000 apps out of 15000 apps cost money and most of it are over priced. and why on earth would you want to go through all the process to download apps from itune (costing money for some) when u can go though the same procedure to download 3rd party apps for FREE (i am talking about legal ones) ??
Jailbreaking is not ilegal, when u buy ur laptops did they say u cant downlaod or instal any programs to it??? That is why if u jail break u would only void ur warranty which can be fixed by simply restoring it.
man can not believe anyone that doesnt want to jailbreak.

Well, the thing is if you don't have a credit card, you can't really feed dollar bills into your computer, unless there is a way to do that, then I guess you could just do that... Anyway, some things can only be done via jailbreak, ie. Custom home screens, rom emu's, other little things

The jailbreak is useful for all the rasons above and more! I am for example interested in the file system of devices, I want to move my music in by just shoving it in the correct folder, I dont want to sinc my device which cant be done by more than 1 device per comp. I want my ipod to be a portable computer where i have full control. I want to be able to edit files download apps not controlled by apple and generally have a free petty apple free rein over the ipod i paid £150 for! The reason why people ask "why would you want to jailbreak" is that effectivly they havent jailbroken their pc. Have they even looked in prog files? Have they explored and understood .dll and .sys files? Do they know what an .exe file is? No. They follow the windows interface.

Okay. I am a believer. I will jail break my iPhone in China.
I am trying to understand the Chinese market where a few people jail break their iPhone and install apps, but the morons like me who don't jail break their phones still do not put any apps on their iPhones. Why not? There are hundreds of legal apps in the iTunes Store China, but people with iPhones (or iPod touch) in China are not installing Apps? Why not?

@ DRC : sorry there must be a misunderstanding here. I said that depends on how you look at things. Get the cracked file try it for a couple of days and if it suits you buy the app. I never encourage anybody not to do that. It common sense. And to be honest its the best thing to do.I dunno what apps are you using that cost $1 , maybe that BS app iFart. But i was talking about the real apps that gives this device real enhancement and cost a lot of money. If you prefer to pay for something and in a couple of days to realize that is not really what you need, than that is your problem. Again , sorry for the misunderstanding :)

hey, i was reading that when you jailbreak you loose a significant amount of battery life because the processor speed is turned way up...? is this true and if it is is there a way to re-restrict the speed so i get more battery when im just listening to music?

For the amount of crap apps out there that sound perfect, even with reviews and demos, and oyu just feel plain ripped off once you find out you have no use for it, it makes plenty sense. I don't consider it stealing when most of these apps are no more than Web 2.0 gadgets that you can add to igoogle/myspace/blogger/etc for free -- actually alot of flash based free stuff can run circles around some of these apps that no programmer in their right mind (unless a mac user) would charge for in the first place.

My friend at school tried to jailbreak his 1st generation itouch and it crashed and wouldn't even turn on. Why is this and does it happen often while jailbreaking??
Also I heard that if u jailbreak your itouch, it cancels out the warrenty. Is there anyway to avoid that??
