Where's the facts in this article? This is all speculation.

Actually you have no proof of it "ALL" being speculation. Basically your speculating that this is "ALL" speculation.

I would take a MyTouch 3G over an iPhone 3GS any day of the week. More functionality, more customization. Hands down... better phone.

Many times I have thought about getting an I phone, But not with AT&T. I have decided that the Blackberry option even without all of the apps is still the better choice. Too bad, the Iphone would have been fun

If this is true, I'm really happy. AT&T is the #1 reason I'm not getting the iPhone. I couldn't deal with it.

    is verizon gettinf somee?
  • Ryan Lalonde · 3 months ago
It doesn't bother me since I'm in Canada and I go with Rogers. AT&T sucks tho and America needs to move on.

Of course it's not as simple as just releasing a model that works with all carriers. Sprint and Verizon are CDMA, while AT&T and T-Mobile are GSM. Further confusing it, AT&T and T-Mobile use different frequencies for 3G. So they'd need separate models or a super-model than handles all the GSM 3G possibilities. So while AT&T's exclusivity may end at some point, expect a second model to be mated to a second carrier.

You wouldn't need a super phone for universal 3G. You can take an unlocked phone to any carrier on 3G now and pop in a new SIM card and go. Verizon and Sprint also both have 3G networks in addition to the CDMA and TMDA networks. Most of the newer Verizon phones are quadband, which includes 3G.

3G is not universal. GSM has its own version(s) of 3G and CDMA has its own. VZW's and Sprint's networks are still CDMA-based, and thus their 3G is still quite a bit different than the GSM-based one used by AT&T and T-Mobile. It's true that there are some "world" phones out there--basically those that have CDMA and GSM support, but their 3G support is still not quite universal as they don't always support all of the frequencies everywhere (again, especially when it comes to 3G on the GSM side).

Now, once LTE comes around, since practically everyone is moving over to that, then it will be as close as to universal as it can be, at least for the time being, but that's still at least a few years away.

iPhone end exclusivity with AT&T? could bring AT&T to its knees! But I'd love to go back to reliable service from #verizon

I think this was posted not that long ago on mashable. are we already recycling articles?
  • Adam Ostrow · 3 months ago
no, the prior article (linked in story) is AT&T's CEO saying exclusivity won't last forever ...

I feel cheated for having wasted my time reading this. Nothing to see here, folks. Move along.

I imagine that an end to iPhone's exclusive contract with AT&T will bring in a flood of new customers - myself among them. From what I hear in day-to-day conversation, the #1 reason for not buying an iPhone is a lack of confidence in AT&T or simply a desire to stay with a particular carrier (Verizon, in most cases it seems). I recently made the decision not to buy an iPhone based on the fact that my friends with AT&T have poor reception, and I didn't want to switch from Verizon. If there had been an option to buy an iPhone AND stick with Verizon, I would have been sold. There would have been no competition.

go go go! I hate AT&T and is partially a reason of why I have yet to get my iPhone :(
...or any other services from them. But hopefully we'll see it out on a new provider.
  • Kristen · 3 months ago
Good! All phones should be non-exclusive. Do we let our cable providers tell us where to buy our TVs or our internet providers tell us where to buy our computers? Absolutely not; I've never known why this system worked for phones.

Let's hope for a CDMA/GSM iPhone... LTE isn't going to be ubiquitous for a bit.
    Fingers crossed :)

Speculative to say the least... but i will be the first one in line to change provider when possible!

Verizon will never have the iphone. They're by far the most restrictive of all of the carriers - the iphone would've been in their catalog at the beginning if they were willing. this will go to t-mobile, but verizon and apple both are too anal to let someone else dictate so much to them.
  • m@tt · 3 months ago
That's the most idiotic and backwards comment on here. With the iPhones success, Verizon cannot wait for the exclusivety to end. They were in fact supposed to have been the 1st carrier to have the iPhone.
  • Rachel · 3 months ago
In Spain they tied to Telefónica, the most expensive and worst service company here, IMO. That's why I still don't have one (I hate that company!) and why I've decided just to get an IPod Touch. I'll stick with my old cell phone if I need to call someone and use the IPod Touch for wifi.
  • HATE AT&T · 3 months ago
Sweet Jesus! Yes! Please make the I-phone open to other carriers. AT&T might finally have to show some real customer service and build out their network, instead of making excuses.

It is PC vs Mac deja vous again. After a couple of years, Android phone will start to be more popular than iPhone. And Apple will regret missing opportunity again.

I would really love to see the iPhone come to T-mobile, I would drop my G1 in a heartbeat.

Screw the iPhone...the HTC Hero is the way to go. Sprint's network is reliable (atleast in my area), it's cheaper, and the Hero has just as much if not more functionality than the iPhone
