Mashable - The Social Media Guide: iPhone Is a Horrible Phone? Well, If You Look at it That Way…

  • A GOOG · 1 month ago
Cellphones with Android 2.0 are the best, what do you think?
  • Jason · 1 month ago
Who can say? None are available yet, troll.

Want the worst phone in the world? Try the HTC Hero with Android 1.5. The basic things you covered here are completely fumbled by the Hero, and even if you go the Google Voice route (again, on 1.5), you're in for a world of hurt and disappointment. If you're emo, get ready to really cut yourself.

The only problem I can relate to is the dropped calls, and that's because I'm in Chicago, where 6 in 10 commuters have an iPhone. Solution? Turn 3G off and use the EDGE network for voice. If I'm trying to find my way around (data), I'll go back to 3G. Then again, even when I made the brief switch to Sprint, EVDO was painfully slow, too.

The gripes this post makes against the iPhone should be levied against US cell networks in general, but whatever. Now that the Droid is officially the second coming, all the cool kids are slamming on the iPhone -- hands down the best smart phone on the market.

    mla
  • Alejandro Amo · 1 month ago
I hope Stan is NOT slamming the iphone due to "commercial issues", but its own experience, which is shared by *too much* iphone users.

PD.: But, ey! Stan is a cool kid LOL
  • KK · 1 month ago
you are right.... iphone is the best of all phones in the world as of now...
  • Matt · 1 month ago
fwiw, with o2 in the UK, I've *never* had a dropped call on my iPhone, and never had any of the other call-related problems you describe (excepting poor battery, which is par for the course).
  • randy · 1 month ago
no call related problems with orange austria, either...
  • A GOOG · 1 month ago
I haven't an Iphone so I have no problem... ;-)
  • Rollo · 1 month ago
Again, like Matt, I have had no problems with dropped calls on my iPhone using O2 in the UK. It's just not an issue. Maybe it is down to the network after all.
  • Mike Mella · 1 month ago
Same with me with Rogers Internet in Canada. Never had any of those issues.
  • recklesslover · 1 month ago
It's pretty easy to call the iPhone the worst phone in the world...considering it's by far the most popular. The more people that use something, the more people are going to have common problems. It's not that it's the iPhone...it's just part of using a cell phone. There isn't any AMAZING phone. iPhone has come close to achieving it though.

I've never had any of those problems either. Sometimes a call drops, but it's not on my end. It's the Verizon customer on the other end!
  • Alejandro Amo · 1 month ago
I think Stan is tryiing to say that there is "a high % of people" with phone call issues in iphone.

That's not the same as "a high amount or people".

If so, the amount of customers should have nothing to do, the point should be that a too high % of this people is having problems.

BTW, I'm sure apple apreciates this kind of feedback and they'd love to enhance iphone's performance on call.
  • steveabraham · 1 month ago
The *only* point that's valid is to do with battery life. Maybe it's because I'm in the UK and on O2, but I've not suffered at all from ignored calls, dropped calls or poor call quality.
  • Tom Dixon · 1 month ago
Maybe I'm just fortunate, but calls are clearer than they were on my Verizon BlackBerry Storm, I haven't had any dropped calls, people hear me clearly, and I've never received complaints for not answering calls (at least calls I didn't deliberately ignore!). I'm on AT&T in Arkansas. The only problem I have had with it regarding calls is the voice recognition software doesn't work well with my Jawbone Prime Bluetooth headset.

No call related problems also with portuguese vodafone...

To be honest - the iPhone frustrated the hell out of me and I'm not an owner. I fully accept I can't comment too much as I've never lived with it, but I just couldn't get over the fact of how dated the hardware is/was.

The first one released wasn't even 3g when that technology was around. Not to mention a low res camera (compared to what was out there), no MMS, no Video etc etc.

The apps I understand are what really makes the phone worthy, and as far as I understand, the OS is rather cool.

I just can't help think that it should be sooo much better than it is and it's meant to be a great device.

So when I discovered about the Nokia N97 before I was due my upgrade, I wanted that. I even changed networks. It kills the iPhone hardware wise yet completely shoots itself in the foot when it comes to the OS which is crazy.

They've had to release a big firmware update already (I'm still waiting for mine to download it), so it shows it's not ALL about the hardware.

Worst phone ever? I would say most frustrating phone ever as in if they nailed the hardware, I think pretty much all manufacturers would be hard pressed to beat it.
  • Joe Rubin · 1 month ago
Does any of this have to do with AT&T? This past month Ive been making calls to numbers stored on my phone, OR direct dial, and it connects to other random people for like 10 seconds, then rings again to a different random person. Then it drops. I dialed into someone else checking their voicemail in Spanish one day, just weird stuff. As for the iPhone itself, i love it. I have no problem hearing people, even when its pinned on my shoulder with my head tilted while driving and eating.
  • johnhutson · 1 month ago
Real big and clever using your phone whilst driving.

    Idiot.
  • Brad F. · 1 month ago
    and eating too.
  • Brad F. · 1 month ago
Actually, that was probably a hiccup with the government's secret wire-tapping agreement with AT&T.
  • Jonathan Lyons · 1 month ago
I have never had, a missed call or dropped call! The battery life is pretty rubbish though! Personally, as a gadget freak, I love the iphone and can only see the huge potential of it in the future.

By the way, the Facebook Connect link is not working below!
  • Elizabeth K. Barone · 1 month ago
Not to mention the extremely high rates that come with it... I'll stick with my BlackBerry. (:
  • Jodee · 1 month ago
Oh please worst phone in the World is a bit strong. We went from Suncom to At&T when we got our phones and yes we have had some dropped calls but what cell phone does not have dropped calls. I will say the 3G iPhone has much better sound quality then the original. All in all the good out weighs the bad.
  • Daniel Vining · 1 month ago
I have had my iPhone for about a month, and have pretty much stopped calling it a cell phone, preferring to look at it as a really small computer. Using it as a phone comes after texting, surfing the web, email, blogging, taking pics and video, using GPS and Maps, gaming, and all the other great Apps available for it. It should have been named the iPDA.

Well, the list of bad or missing telephony features can be extended pretty easily:

    Messaging
    * You can not send nor receive contacts via SMS
    * You don't know how many chars are in that SMS (160 or less? more than 160 = higher charge!)
    * You can not edit a number before you call again
    * Stupid number presentation when abroad - why does iPhone try to push me into rules of number display?
    * not able to store USSD commands as shortcodes (eg. to know about my prepaid account is *100#)
    * numbers not presented properly, sometimes the call list does not hold the latest record
    * MMS OTA config (OTA=over the air, by self-config binary SMS) not possible
    * Beam a contact by Bluetooth to another non-iPhone? No way!
    ...

And - how the hell is it impossible to read incoming PDF's in a good way? No bookmarking, even the simplest features are missing!

    yes, that is really annoying!
  • Brad F. · 1 month ago
Good point about the character count on the SMS... That drives me nuts too. What if I go over by 1 character and get charged for two SMS? Not everyone in the world has unlimited SMS plans.

I've never had a dropped call, but I have had it not ring a time or two.
  • timdickinson · 1 month ago
I think the dropped calls may be your network as I've never experienced one, ever, on any phone on the UK (on O2 or previously Vodafone).

But all the other issues - absolutely. Call quality is pretty poor, reception is the worst I've ever had (the same places with my old phone on O2 worked fine). I've had issues trying to end a call when the phone basically crashes and the call only ends when the otherside finishes it - bit a major issue but annoying. Calls not ringing or coming through is another issue I keep getting.

Worst phone ever? Probably not, but the phone features definitely need a complete overhaul to get up to those of SE or Nokia. But as the article says, the iPod Touch features are why I have the phone and they are great.
  • Sarah · 1 month ago
Ive had an iPhone for 4 months, and am absolutely head over heels in love with it. I dont have any problems with the sound or microphone. The people on the other end of my phone calls have commented how clear my phone is. As for the dropped calls, yes I have had a few. From what I have been told it is just the network in this area being fairly new and not the strongest. I have experienced the magical text message saying I missed a call when it never rang or shows a missed call on the phone. Considering what is being done on the iPhone when you go through the battery, you've gotta be impressed. Ive have regular phones that are brand new being used in less than half the amount of time die twice as quickly. I have the iPhone 3Gs and love it! I would never go back. It has some issues, but nothing to call it the worst phone ever. It will always be better than the razors and other now seemingly pre historic phones. As for the iPhone vs. Blackberry my friends with Blackberries grab my iPhone and start playing with it. I certainly do not grab their blackberry and play with it.
  • Kevin Cooper · 1 month ago
I have experienced some of these "phone" issues with my iPhone. But honestly, the phone is probably the least used feature for me. My guess is that most people who want or use an iphone, are buying it for the thousands of other good reasons than for the actual phone.
  • Vijay · 1 month ago
I am using iPhone extensively on work. Most of the time I am attending the conference calls using iPhone. I have never face any call related issues.

Battery life - when I compared to my previous phones, I am bit satisfied with iPhone battery life. I do agree that it takes good amount of energy. But having all the features it is fine.
  • Jessica · 1 month ago
YES. I am a Blackberry user but my boyfriend and several friends have Iphones that are CONSTANTLY dropping calls for no apparent reason or just not receiving them. It is the worst phone for dropping calls
  • rvw · 1 month ago
You're totally right. The iPhone is the best and the worst phone at the same time.
  • Jensen_G · 1 month ago
I actually switched from Verizon to ATT to get an iPhone, and my iPhone experience has been roughly similar to my Verizon experience. Probably slightly worse overall in terms of number of bars, but really absolutely nothing like you describe in the article.

Plus, calling the iPhone the worst phone ever because of your personal experience owning one iPhone in one location is hyperbole (or giving credit to those who say that without the broad numbers to back it up)
  • poppablog · 1 month ago
if you want just a phone, then buy just a phone...if you want something to browse the web and play games...oh and to make calls, buy an iPhone or Android device.
  • Geoff · 1 month ago
The iPhone is more than just a device to browse the web and play games with, and those who choose to use it shouldnt have to sacrifice the other important phone features.

I use my iPhone for everything and couldn't imagine life without one. Google Maps get me from one place to another via the best route on a daily basis. I use my iPhone for email, text messaging, and to do spontaneous, on-the-road research. My daily task list and calendar synch with those on my computer. My contact list. These are things that have become important to my daily productivity and business life. Then there are less important apps that provide great luxuries - listening to music, tuning my guitar.

I switched over from Verizon once the 3g version came out. There is NO QUESTION - AT&T service is horrible compared to Verizon in the DC-Metro area. I cannot figure out if it is just the network or if the phone is also partly to blame, but I always get dropped calls, or the phone fails to make calls repeatedly. I've had three different phones. Twice apple has swapped out my phone for a replacement because the the amount of dropped calls. AT&T has occasionally discounted my bill because I've complained about a huge number of dropped calls.

The iPhone is an amazing device but a Horrible phone no doubt. No one wants to carry around and iPhone and a normal mobile phone.
  • Marine · 1 month ago
Glad you picked that one up ! This might sound like Neanderthal but I still exchange many SMS with friends and the sms part is just horrible on the iPhone too. As you said : apple, please take notice.
  • ME Living · 1 month ago
The iPhone is a horrible phone. My iPhone drops every call if I even get the call. At first I've been blaming AT&T as their service is awful as well. However, it is beginning to be tough to put all the blame on AT&T. The iPhone as a phone is so terrible that it is difficult to pinpoint who is at fault. Regardless of whose problem it is I can't make phone calls on the iPhone. I'm ready to pay the termination fee if someone tells me this Friday that DROID on Verizon is great.
  • matt · 1 month ago
    one more data point:

i'm a relatively new iphone/AT&T user in san francisco. i'd guess that about 1/4 of my phone calls get dropped. in addition, i don't get reception inside my home.

before iphone/AT&T, i was a long time sprint/a900 user. i don't remember it _ever_ dropping a call (except when riding caltrain through a tunnel). and, i got a clean signal in all rooms of my home. when i got my iphone (3gs), my friends all commented that the audio quality of my calls had dropped significantly.

battery life on the iphone is much shorter too, but it hasn't been too much of a problem. i just charge it every night (my a900 could go 3-5 days between charges).

that said... i'm not giving back my iphone (even if i had a choice).
  • anyulled · 1 month ago
it has become a trending topic on twitter, so it should be a major problem this issues for the iphone. It's too bad that a great company like this had forgotten the most obvious task and focus on the glittering of the device...
  • bigmac · 1 month ago
I get the dropped calls a lot, for me it's ATT. Hoping they allow verzion to sell it next year, I have never dropped a verizon call in 5+ years.
  • rich · 1 month ago
No dropped calls or poor sound here in upstate NY. And it works great with my Garmin through bluetooth. Great phone, great mobile surfing device, and those apps. Wow.
  • Andreas Duess · 1 month ago
No poor sound, no dropped calls on Rogers here in Canada. A lot of the complaints people have about the iPhone are carrier issues and have little, if anything, to do with the phone.

Battery life: Calibrate the battery properly and switch on auto-screen brightness. I go for two days without recharge, with medium to heavy use.
  • mikebayes · 1 month ago
Yes, it's a lousy phone. But, does it matter? Isn't it interesting that what once was the primary function of a "phone" is now just another app.
  • Brian · 1 month ago
    Blackberry ftw.
  • Dimplemonkey · 1 month ago
When you create a device that does way more than a phone but way less than a PC/Mac and you complain one way or the other, then you should carry both devices all the time and not be so dependent on the iPhone that you do nothing but B&M about the gray area.
  • Justin Thompson · 1 month ago
I haven't had many inexplicably dropped calls, but I've experienced the phone not ringing at all on some calls. That is the most annoying thing to me.
  • Jarrod Morgan · 1 month ago
FWIW, Calls dropping and not coming through happens on my AT&T blackberry. It could be the network. (There's a map for that)
  • Randall · 1 month ago
The reception in Chicago for ATT/iPhone is good. It sounds like ATT 3G coverage on the coasts is terrible. You'd think they'd want to make sure NYC, San Fran area and the rest of California would be top priority. #ATT Fail...again.
  • Mondi · 1 month ago
I'm surprised that this is even up here - don't almost all phones have a few of these problems? Do people really think that Apple's products are so superior that they wouldn't have the basic problems that other phones/companies do?

    *shrugs*

And poor Stan. If you praise Apple, you get called a fanboy. If you say anything bad about Apple, you get attacked. Life's harsh, man.

That being said, I've also been told by a few different people that the iPhone as a phone sucks - and if I wanted the features, just to get an iPod touch. I have to tell you though, carrying my verizon phone, my iPod touch, and a digital camera - yeah, it gets old. Like, really old.
  • Brad F. · 1 month ago
I do have an issue hearing someone when I'm on a call. I actually get irritated with it and have to use the headphones so I can hear the person properly. This is especially bad when there's background noise either where I am or where the caller is. I don't really like walking around with headphones in my ears all day long, and given how much this phone cost me I was really disappointed with that basic level of performance.

While we're on the topic of volume, when the phone rings I can barely hear it, even if I'm sitting on the bus and it's in my pocket. My wife's Nokia 6500, on the other hand, screams like a dying cat and everyone in the bus knows it's ringing. Same with SMS alerts. Actually, worse with those. Unless I have the headphones in I usually miss them.

And... before anyone asks... yes I do have the volume turned all the way up, and yes, I did in fact take a hearing test recently with better than average results.
  • Brent · 1 month ago
Try upgrading from the default iPhone OS 3.0 to the latest, 3.2. Dropped call problem fixed.
  • johnmc · 1 month ago
I'm actually quite satisfied with the iPhone as far as call quality goes. If my Jawbone runs out of juice while I'm driving, the microphone is sensitive enough to pick up my conversation from the passenger seat or center console (in a Toyota Yaris, so the distance is admittedly small) while using the headphone jack through my car stereo. I may be biased because of past experience with a Treo 600 - now that was a truly awful phone. The battery life is decent too.
  • Sam · 1 month ago
I'm convinced that many of the problems you mention are AT&T and not the iPhone. My daughter has an LG Shine and has the same problem with dropped calls and calls/voicemail not showing up. Shoddy battery life, yeah, but it's a PDA so we all expect that. I bought a cool little external battery from Kensington that gives me emergency juice when needed. It fits nicely in my PC backpack or my pocket. So, no worries.

I wonder if the Droid and other smart phones will also struggle with battery life. I'm guessing they will. It's tied to the size of the screen and amount of processing, obviously.

Frankly, as bad as AT&T's quality is, I couldn't give up my iPhone at this point despite a few problems. It has changed the way I work and relax. Now if Verizon were to get an iPhone, that would be nice. I'm hoping this will happen on the new LTE network.
  • PrenatalYoga · 1 month ago
I agree. I think its a terrible phone, and I also think AT&T is a terrible provider. Everything else about this device still has me owning one and paying the extremely high price to do so. Really, Apple/AT&T, please sort these issues out and make this device work better. I'd really rather not go back to carrying 2 devices again
  • JohnnyB · 1 month ago
I think the iPhone is a great device -the real problem comes when you need service. For my money, Apple's Achilles heel is their catastrophic disregard for customer satisfation when something goes wrong. While other mobiles may be serviced at any local shops, Apple products are funneled through a limited number of certified service offices, and strict rules apply. In my country, Norway, one single office handles all the broken units, and Apple ignores national consumer laws as well. I don't know if I was particularly unfortunate, but I waited SEVEN WEEKS to have my broken device replaced with a new one. That's a joke Apple, and not a good one.

I agree with the really low volume and dropped calls bit. But maybe the second thing is due to the shitty Vodafone network here in Bangalore.
