Mashable - The Social Media Guide: iPhone Exclusivity Ends in Canada Next Month

  • Ryan Lalonde · 2 months ago
I already have the iPhone with Rogers and Rogers is the best cellular company Canada has. I won't be switching.
  • Chris McGuire · 2 months ago
Best of a bad bunch unfortunately. Cell phone companies in Canada have had it too easy for too long. I cant wait for more competition!
  • Ryan Lalonde · 2 months ago
Well I mean, Rogers doesn't have text receiving charges and their plan prices are nice and cheap.
  • Scott · 2 months ago
Their price plans are cheap? You must work for Rogers with a comment like that, their price plans are the highest in Canada. Don't even get me started on the data side of it.
  • Nadeem Khan · 2 months ago
now, rogers charges 13 cents a message received if you don't have a text messaging plan!!!

Very interesting... Thanks for the info, Barb! Not from Canada, as you know, but have friends who are. Will definitely pass on the information! Thanks again! -twitter.com/alyssamag

It's about time, the Iphone should of launched on an Open Network so the Iphone can work on any carrier.
This closed style of doing business is so 1985. Companies need to wake up or they will find themselfs with a product and no one to sell it too
  • ProCommunicator · 2 months ago
I've considered getting the iPhone for a while, but was not impressed at all with Rogers plans: they just didn't seem to have anything that gave me what I needed without charging for extras I didn't need.

Hopefully this will at least induce some competition, which could lead to better plans, Canada is known for having some of the most expensive cell phone plans.
  • DebWard · 2 months ago
iPhone should be available on all networks. I am waiting for Verizon to offer it.... will it be soon?
  • Ray Ray Angel · 2 months ago
Sorry but Verizon is not GSM and the iPhone is designed for a GSM or HSPA only right now so it won't be coming to Verizon anytime soon.
  • RevenG · 2 months ago
Actually, Apple is setting up a CDMA branch. So the real question is Sprint or Verizon?
  • funkvsrock · 2 months ago
I'm glad I waited this long so I won't be tied down by a Rogers' contract. Bring the competition!
  • Leesa Barnes · 2 months ago
I'm not switching either. I tried every carrier in Canada and Rogers is the best of all evils. I'll get the iPhone with the carrier I'm already with.
  • MrVLthr03 · 2 months ago
I currently own a Blackberry Storm from Telus and I don't like it. I cannot wait to take it to Telus come November and say give me a iPhone. Telus should have gotten its collective shit together to build a 3G Network, it didn't. Blackberry Smartphones suck and I can't wait to turn this piece of shit I own back to Telus.
  • Mr.Smyth · 2 months ago
Having Bell pick up the iPhone will put a massive smile on my face. NOw being able to use my grandfather account (i've been building for the last 5 years) will save me over half the cost of what rogers customers are paying.

    this is very good news.
  • Name · 2 months ago
right.... but if you want the iphone for the subsidy pricing you will need to sign another 36 month contract, and you will loose your granfather plan. Or you can buy the Iphone with bell for full price.
  • Josh Arnold · 2 months ago
well i would love verizon but most likely iphone will go to t-mobile and possibly sprint because verizon would want to brand the iphone with the verizon app store instead of the apples app store
  • Ray Ray Angel · 2 months ago
The real reason it likely won't find itself on Verizon is because Verizon does not use GSM nor HSPA. As such the technology inside the iPhone just isn't compatible.
  • RevenG · 2 months ago
Just an FYI. Apple actually went to Verizon first for exclusivity, but was turned down. AT&T was the 2nd choice for Apple in the US. Phones are also capable of being dual mode. Look at Verizon's BB Storm 9530. It has GSM and CDMA.
  • darrenscrawford · 2 months ago
Might have to move back to Canada now! Can't wait till the US gets it on Verizon. I would switch from my Blackberry Storm in a moment. That thing runs so poorly that it is just a frustration to even use.

    I'm from Canada...

I think everyone who wanted an iPhone has an iPhone. With the exception, I'm sure, of some kids who's parents haven't been willing to fork up the money for one.

The fact is Rogers is far superior in customer service and quality... So most people don't want to switch.
  • alexbarton · 2 months ago
What are the facts? I don't agree — I quite like Telus — but that's my opinion; that doesn't make it fact.
  • Nadeem Khan · 2 months ago
ofcourse, i've been waiting on rogers to give me an iphone but when i was going to be able to get it they changed their policy in me having to wait 2 years to get it now, and not only that i have to sign and additional contract for the data plan, without which, i can't get an iphone, this is absolutely ludacris and daylight robbery!
  • Nithin · 2 months ago
Hopefully (in my lifetime) I will be able to take the iPhone to whichever GSM carrier I like, wherever in the world, and will be able to use all of its features without a hitch. I am a dreamer, so sue me.
  • Kevin McNally · 2 months ago
Why can't we get over the monopoly hump here in the good 'ole USofA? Right now it's AT&T or bust. Just read an article that said this: "The Apple iPhone has boosted AT&T's subscriber numbers, but network problems and a bevy of complaints from frustrated customers are likely hurting the company's reputation." Here's the full article: http://news.cnet.com/8301-30686_3-10365952-266.... I am hearing it might take another couple of years before the iPhone is available on other carriers, such as Verizon ~ which many believe offers better service.
  • Ray Ray Angel · 2 months ago
We shall see. As it stands Apple will need to redo the entire iPhone inside to be compatible with anything but HSPA or GSM. So likely a few more years.
  • Chris Thomson · 2 months ago
Rogers seems like it is the best cell carrier in Canada currently, IMO. I'm more excited to see that there's now competition to get those data plan prices down a little more, or perhaps even a switch from the 3yr required plan for the iPhone to a 2yr plan. That'd be nice.
  • EggZap · 2 months ago
I am fairly fed up with the blackberry, and the limitations of the trackball. I for one will keep an eye out for when Bell has the iphone and I will switch without incurring contract penalties.
  • Elianastar · 2 months ago
I'm in the USA and would ONLY consider changer carriers if Verizon picks up iPhone. My husband doesn't want an iPhone but DOES want to change carriers. Verizon is the only carrier in the Portland area that consistently gets calls on the lakes he likes to fish as a fishing guide. There are rumors this may be in the works. If that proves true, when the next iPhone is released after my contract runs out, we will switch. I won't be renewing my AT&T contract so I'll be free to change if both of these happens after next year October.
  • Ray Ray Angel · 2 months ago
I hate being a naysayer but it isn't likely. At least not until 2011. The iPhone will only work as it stands with GSM and HSPA networks. I have heard some rumors that Apple just hired a bunch of CDMA Engineers though so we all might get what we wish for ;)
  • elbenja · 2 months ago
It's hard to say. I'm living in montreal, and found Fido (same company as Rogers) the best option even before the iPhone.
I hope this new competition makes Bell and Telus offer something REALLY better!
  • Keith Schilling · 2 months ago
lol - I'm still waiting for it to drop in the US. I 'may' hold out, but the android is looking good to me.
  • Kate · 2 months ago
I live in Canada and have Fido (same as Rogers) I hate having to pay so much for the stupid data plan and having no choice but to get it. I'd like more competition and not just between Rogers, Telus, and Bell! Bring it on!
  • Renante Rondina II · 2 months ago
i'm on Telus, so I'm super excited about getting an iPhone 3GS this winter/spring =)
  • logitech lautsprecher · 2 months ago
It is going to take some time before Tellus or Bell can even handle the iPhone, as both are CDMA carriers. Rogers/Fido only had it because they were/are the only GSM carrier(s) in Canada. This also leads credence to the rumor of T-Mobile Canada starting early next year.
  • Cindy · 2 months ago
uhh no bell is launching there HSPA network...
  • David · 2 months ago
I am Canadian, with Fido, and I can't wait to see some competition in the iPhone market !!
  • Ryan · 2 months ago
Ding Dong the wicked witch is dead! Great news. Rogers sucks plain and simple. Even if they didn't, this will force them to drop prices.
  • claviergal · 2 months ago
I'm surprised no one has mentioned Wind Mobile as competition to Rogers, et al in Canada. You couldn't PAY me to be a Roger's customer! As soon as Wind offers the iPhone, I will finally buy one. http://www.windmobile.ca/
  • bibowski · 2 months ago
Time to put that $15 Telus Unlimited Data plan to use!!
  • Ian H. · 2 months ago
Meanwhile, those of us in Saskatchewan are still stuck with Sasktel's anemic CDMA network, with no iPhone and no Pre... bah!
  • shameequa · 2 months ago
I'm in the Netherlands, the iPhone is only available on the T-Mobile network right now and reception is very very poor (my friends can't access the internet on their iPhones at my house and there is no phone reception at my parents house for example, please note Holland is tiny and I do not live in the middle of nowhere). I'd like them to be on the KPN network (or any other network that shares it's network with, basically KPN shares with a bunch and has great coverage and T-Mobile shares with a bunch and has poor coverage).

I just got an iPod Touch a few months ago and once the iPhone is on a better network I'd be more than happy to make the switch
  • Gman · 2 months ago
It's not that consumers are attracted to any one network provider, although some are better than others. It's that Apple's iPhone now gets another marketing boost with media and blog coverage. RIM's BB's are the way to go, though. Did you know that 30% of calls in NY are dropped on a daily basis? This stat is not exclusive to NY - It encompasses most large cities.
  • katiemur · 2 months ago
la vie is maybe Bell, but Bell, ce n'est pas un cadeau either. I'm with Fido and they don't know what they're doing. Switching to Rogers is an option, but it's the same company. Their package deals seem to be better, off-hand. Maybe with some competition the rates'll drop. Bell? I'd rather eat my long underwear first.

I would love the end of exculivity in Spain because Telefonica is a nightmare
  • Jeremy Campbell · 2 months ago
I have registered to be notified as soon as Telus has information on the iPhone launch for its network.

I have long waited for this to happen. I just hope that they have service plans comparable to what they offer for BlackBerry customers.
  • Scott · 2 months ago
Talk about timing for Bell and Telus. There are going to be a ton of existing Bell and Telus customers as well as fed up Rogers customers that are going to lock themselves into a 3 year contract right before WIND mobile launches. Bravo to the execs that pushed to have the new HSPA network up and running before the end of the year months earlier then speculated.

I have wanted an Iphone since they launched but at the time was stuck on a contract with Bell and when I was finally free Rogers had to go and increase their price plans. That was 6 months ago and they have consistently upped their pricing since then which is absolute garbage. Even their latest scam of getting rid of system access fees is just another way to milk their consumer base for more money and at the same time make it looks like it's an actual government fee.
  • Justin Luey · 2 months ago
I wouldn't get too excited yet. First, all these articles are speculation based on Bell now being able to support the iPhone, it doesn't mean they can do a deal with Apple or that Rogers doesn't have an exclusive like AT&T. Second, Bell is terrible. Their customer service is by far the worst of any mobile company and their network stinks (maybe the new one will be better). The good thing is the competition might put downward pressure on the the pricing which is desperately needed in Canada. I have an iPhone on Rogers and I'm thrilled with every aspect of it except the price.

Update: It's official now, Telus has updated their website. http://promotions.telus.com/registration/

I'm in the US. I hope T-Mobile USA gets the iPhone so they can overtake AT&T. AT&T is horrible, thus nicknamed the Deathstar. Well also because their logo looks like a Deathstar, which made me think.
