Mashable - The Social Media Guide: iPhone Coming to Orange UK

"Right now, only the U.S. and Germany remain as the major countries where the iPhone has a presence with only one carrier option." - and Spain - maybe we're not major though? :(
  • Christina Warren · 2 months ago
Ack! I thought Spain had multiple carriers -- my bad!
  • Omar · 2 months ago
Rogers is the only iPhone carrier in Canada, Fido doesn't count as it's owned by Rogers, I guess we're not major either? :)
  • Christina Warren · 2 months ago
HA! Touche. And fixed. And I can't believe I spazzed on this (I've had to create carrier/nation roll-out charts showing off tariffs, phone pricing and carrier by country not once, but twice).

My contract is up in December with O2 and my iPhone. Orange say later this year, so I have a lot of options to think about. Knowing Orange, they'll have a lot more offers, and give you free texts out of the blue. With O2, it's 600 minutes, 500 texts, £35 a month. That's it. Orange are a lot more flexible and inexpensive. Plus, Orange Wednesday is a stroke of genius.

tbh, orange has the worst reception, im going with o2
  • JoshBoulton · 2 months ago
I don't think that's fair; in Birmingham it's pretty good, and the O2 signal in many places, especially indoors is crap.
  • JoshBoulton · 2 months ago
This is great! Hopefully this will force O2 and Orange to be competitive in their Contract and Pay as You Go rates, and might buy one :) So if your contract ends with 02, or you're on PAYG, will you be able to unlock and use an Orange sim?

I guess this will also take the strain off one provider, meaning faster speed for 3G etc. ?

Any time we can get off AT&T in the US would be great.
Maybe I should move to France
  • Matthew Lowery · 2 months ago
no because its still too expensive.

As someone who excitedly bought an iPhone a couple of months ago on O2 but had to send it back because there wasnt sufficient cellular coverage where I live (Orange is about the best in my area) I wholeheartedly welcome this news and will definitely be donating my Samsung Tocca to a family member and upgrading to an iPhone when they are available on Orange. Best bit of news I've heard all day - ok it has been a bad day but still!
  • ConnorJack · 2 months ago
Well, tbh, O2 is better than Orange anyway!
  • lagspike · 2 months ago
usually, orange has their handsets cheaper than anyone else, but O2 handsets are usually unlocked and haven't had their firmware ruined (customised)
  • Purser · 2 months ago
I was about to switch from Blackberry with Orange to iPhone with O2. Is it now worth waiting and sticking with Orange?
  • SParky · 2 months ago
Yes, stick with Orange I would say, I'm doing the same thing
  • deanpcmad · 2 months ago
OK. So this might be a good idea as O2 have had the contract for 5 years now...
But what happens with me and O2? Do I stay with O2 or does my number move to Orange as I have an iPhone??
  • SParky · 2 months ago
o2 will still be selling iPhones, Orange are not taking it exclusively
  • SParky · 2 months ago
So many people say that Orange has crap coverage, this is not true. It has the second largest mobile coverage in the UK (only Vodaphone has greater) and with the merger with T-Mobile, it will have the largest 3G network in the UK, so should cope with data demand far better than o2 does.
I will say that there are alot of places where o2 does have better indoor coverage than Orange.

People also complain about their customer service being crap.
In the 7 years that I have been with Orange, I have always had excellent customer service, they are always friendly and give the right advice and no issues when I've wanted changes, they even helped me out with an issue over a phone I got from another supplier and the supplier seriously messed up my contract (the supplier vanished without a trace).
Their broadband customer service on the other hand is crap.

I am overjoyed that iPhone is coming to Orange, it's a deal that's been over a year in the making (with rumours that it was coming last October) and that it will mean cheaper prices.
I'm about to hit my upgrade point and was going to change when my contract ended at the end of January

Cool, my contract is about to expire at the End of the year with O2. Will be def be keeping an eye on Orange handset price and Tariffs, especially since they will be merging with T-Mobile soon, I never wanted to leave T-Mobile when I made the switch to the iPhone, so in a round-about way I will be switching back to my original the carrier, even though it is called Orange and not T-Mobile, though the name may change anyway!

Please oh please let this mean that Verizon is getting the iPhone soon. I will pay money right now to pre-order on any network other than AT&T.

My 3 contract expires in a few days time; I'm going to hang on for a bit and see what Orange plan to do with the iPhone. Even if I don't go with Orange, I can bet that other providers will be falling over backwards to offer incentives to remain with them, especially those who have been customers for quite some time...
  • Dan Hare · 2 months ago
Thank God for that. iPhone is great, but O2 network coverage is rubbish. Now, how do we break that 18 month contract with O2??
  • Liam Daly · 2 months ago
I personally cannot wait for it to come out on Orange they have the best signal in my area and O2 are really poor. Its a shame I only just got my 3GS 5 or so months ago I should of waited.
  • facebook-696555410 · 2 months ago
My phone broke yesterday and since my contract was finally up i had decided to switch from orange to o2 in order to get the iphone. I'm so glad they released this news today as I'm now gonna hold on until they release more details.

Ive heard the 3G network on orange is better so fingers crossed they are competitive in terms of pricing.

I believe you have only one carrier choice (Softbank) for iPhone in Japan, and arguably it is a major country
