Mashable - The Social Media Guide: iPhone and Windows 7 Don’t Play Nice, No Fix in Sight

  • r0cketman22 · 1 month ago
Oh man, I hate this headline. I hope it doesn't deter people from Windows 7. I've hooked up at least 2 iPhones and numerous iPods to my laptop with Windows 7. No problems. At all.

I'm on official Windows 7 now, but I've been using the Beta and RC for about a year.

My desktop has Windows 7 and has no problem syncing with iPhone either. My laptop has a Pentium and the desktop has an AMD chip.
  • trevorz · 1 month ago
I totally agree the title is misleading. The incompatibilty is with p55 chipsetso i5/i7 not with windows 7 itself. But reading mashable on occasion this site is heavy with iphone/apple love so maybe it was on purpose?

windows 7 is fine if you DO NOT have a p55 i5/i7 chipset.
  • Joe Jacobs · 1 month ago
I don't have a p55 i5/i7 chipset but I'm having the same problem. Called Apple up and the only thing the guy could come up with was that iTunes was never designed for Windows 7.
  • Mike P · 3 weeks ago
Having same problem with Win7 64-bit (clean install, brand new HP PC), and I do NOT have a P55 chipset. Running Quad Core Q8400 on Intel P35/P31 chipset.
  • PWR · 3 weeks ago
Same problem. Win 7 64 bit HP/AMD. Firmware upgrade corrupted everything and now iPhone won't upgrade or reboot.
  • bennyb111 · 2 days ago
dummie, it specifically says its a p55 chipset problem. have you hand crafted a laptop with a p55 mobo??? didnt think so
  • r0cketman22 · 2 days ago
    Haha.

Only the title is misleading! The rest is just my case for how good Windows 7 is.
  • Anon · 1 month ago
Blaming the chipset for an error that is only seen in Apple's iPhone and Apple's iTunes on Windows 7 is silly and stinks of stupid Apple fanboism. This is only further proven because people running Hackintosh's on P55 hardware have no iPhone syncing issues under OSX by have syncing issue in Windows 7 on the same hardware. Its then easy to conclude that this is a problem either in Windows 7 or iTunes. Judging by Apple's Vista screw ups in the past I'm going to have to say this is probably Apple deviating from standards and best practices.
  • Stuart Shields · 1 month ago
I have no syncing problems with my iphone and windows 7 :) is it prone to 64bit or 32bit? itunes 9.2??!??!

I think you need to report it abit better, give us more information.

    I'm running iphone 3.1, itunes 9.2, windows 7 ultimate 32bit.

  • Jayson Barrons · 1 month ago
You should be ashamed for that headline - it's not even remotely accurate.
  • trevorz · 1 month ago
I agree, ive posted a few times in this and i give up. Looking at the all the comments, people skim the second paragraph, and jump to conclusion because of the title

Those with an core i5 or i7 chipset running windows are experiencing this particular problem with an error "0xE8000065" other problems with other computer setup is another issue
  • bennyb111 · 2 days ago
you should be ashamed for that combover
  • maxx123 · 1 month ago
    This works perfect.
Uninstall Itunes and the driver and then restart the computer, but make sure every little bit of apple software is removed otherwise it wont work.
Press F8 on boot and choose "Disable signed driver enforcement"
When Windows has booted up, download Itunes, Right Click on the installer, Click Properties and choose Vista Service Pack 1 compatibility.
    Install as normal.
It will work perfectly. I'm not having any issues at all.
  • bennyb111 · 2 days ago
interesting....maybe this thread is worth a bookmark afterall

man ... windows 7 no way deserves this kind bad reporting. Can you at least unbias your headlines and put some facts behind this stuff.

So a couple of people of to reinstall itunes during an upgrade, big deal.

I'm a windows 7 user and had no issues like the one stated above
  • bennyb111 · 2 days ago
can you unbias your asshole, faaagggggot

For me it's just the usual iTunes crap. First it asks me to wipe my iPod because of it being synced to another computer blablabla. After wiping it it wont put my apps back on. After a few trials it does it anyways. Now just my music is gone. Reordering Apps doesn't work in iTunes, it doesn't automatically change the app store country any more when logging in with a different user. It keeps asking me whether I want to delete this and that (Podcasts, Videos, Apps, Music, you name it) from my iPod touch.

Most of this is just normal iTunes behavior, everything new might be Windows 7, or it might be a new version of iTunes. It doesn't really make a difference, it never worked and it will never work.
  • Chris · 1 month ago
Its an issue isolated to a certain chipset and its trended on twitter like as if Windows 7 doesn't work with iPhones at all. Blatantly obvious and shameful nitpicking people, just trying to look for a problem with Windows to moan about.

Not good for Window's reputation either as people will now get the wrong end of the stick and avoid Windows 7, even though they likely wouldn't be affected.

No problems here...maybe its a hardware thing rather than Windows 7 issue.
  • Dave Saunders · 1 month ago
Agreed--while Windows 7 may have exposed the problem, this is clearly a chipset issue. Most of the reports I've seen on this today read like anti Windows propaganda.

It's just a computer...like a hammer. If you're that worried about the OS you must not be doing much of real value WITH your computer. ;-)

    P.S. I have both. :P

Have to agree with the headline deterrent. Windows in general has never played well with others (LOL) - I have my own opinion of iTunes, but as far as compatibility with anything apple to anything apple, it has always streamlined well for the most part.

It doesn't surprise me that Windows7 will continue to have compatibility issues with 3rd party software. When Vista first came out, every other error that was thrown was, "Contact your software vendor for updates". Windows made it very clear that they had no intention of actively facilitating compatibility. Software & hardware manufacturers had to re-write code specifically to access the Vista Kernel differently.

I already have some minor issues with up-to-date software not functioning properly on Windows7, but it isn't significant. I think it's gonna take time and compromise, but it will get there... eventually. In the meantime, I will continue to use Windows7, iPhone & not try to sync w/iTunes until a major patch release is made.

    Thanks for the topic,

    J.

    EDIT:
From reading other comments, it doesn't seem to be a wide spread issue. It seems that re-installation seems to be a good trick.

    G'Luck all.

I've been using W7 since RC1 and never had any problems with iTunes/iPhone syncing after a quick fix: If you use a USB hub the device won't get enough power 9 out of 10 times (thus sync errors) - the solution is to directly connect your USB charger/dock to the back of your PC (or Mac running W7), where the directly-connected-to-the-mainboard USB ports reside.

If you do this no problems should arise. I've done this countless times with a variety of computers, netbooks and laptops.

I have Vista and I have had trouble syncing since getting one of the recent Apple updates iPhone 3.0 or 3.1 or iTunes 9.1. Just switched to iTunes 9.2 last night, but I haven't tried syncing my iPhone yet. It's really annoying and I'm NOT blaming my computer that synced just fine before the Apple updates.

I had issues initially after upgrading to Windows 7 last week, but it seems like they've ironed themselves out for the most part. The only issues that I've had was that it took nearly 30 minutes to sync up the first time that it worked and that it won't automatically open iTunes when I connect my iPhone to my computer.
  • Matthew Lewis · 1 month ago
Any compatibility issues that I have encountered with any software (iTunes and Chrome so far) have only required that I reinstall the software. Easy fix to use the software you need, personally I hate that I need to use iTunes with the iPhone... but that is an entirely different post.

I have not experienced any driver compatibility issues. Windows 7 is awesome "so far"
  • xxdesmus · 1 month ago
Way to go for the sensationalist headlines. Wow.

I installed Windows 7 over Vista on a 2-year-old Toshiba Satellite laptop (full install, not upgrade as the upgrade had issues with some factory-installed Toshiba maintenance programs) last Sunday, then reinstalled the latest version of iTunes. I've had no problems at all with my iPhone 3GS and an iPod Nano - guess I'll consider myself lucky!

Just got an iPhone about 3 weeks ago and just did an upgrade to Win7 from Vista on my laptop (AMD TurionX2 w/ ATI Radeon graphics) 3 days ago. Added a few apps, changed some of my music playlists, and edited a few of my contacts so I could see if it synced correctly. Was a bit slower than it was the first few times I did a sync but it did fully sync with no error messages. Current updated firmware, software, and Win7.

I just installed a Windows 7 upgrade. Everything seems to be syncing with the iTouch and such, but for some reason I cannot make any purchases through the iTunes store. I ran a diagnostic and everything is connected well, but if I am looking for some ColdPlay it just freezes the iTunes Store and Program. The screen says, "Accessing iTunes Store ..." Assuming ColdPlay is not the problem, I re-installed iTunes 64 bit and the problem still persists.

Yes the iPhone compatibility issues with Windows 7 in my view is a major problem. How can Microsoft develop an OS that doesn't work with the biggest selling consumer electronic product on the market. There are millions of people out there, like myself, that don't just use their iPhone as phone and ipod, being able to sync and backup my contacts and calender with Google through iTunes is much more important than my music. There is no excuse for this as it should have been tested, once the word gets around this will seriously affect computer sales with systems shipping with windows 7 already installed. The blame is being knocked back and forth between the P55 chipset and the USB but it worked fine with Vista! Windows 7 has obviously broken this link. Fix it quick!

I don't have a problem syncing my iphone, my pc (windows 7) syncs my iphone in itunes fine. The problem I have is it does not recognize it as a media device and transfer pictures. OOPS, I have a P55 Motherboard. Rats had i known... since I use the iphone 3Gs heavily and need to sync daily with Outlook. Well I'm out of luck for now and here it is.
Loaded Windows 7 64 bit yesterday.
I was positively excited to find out that Itunes is 64 bit Excellent.
I was positively excited to find out that I can merge the data and not loose my games and songs.
I plugged in the iphone and it kept failing the driver download. I had a bit of a freyed cable to I bought a new one. I called ATT and they tole me to call Microsoft (or buy the Apple protection plan - yikes no way).

I was excited to plug in the cable. Wait a ray of hope the Ipgone drivel loaded properly. Itunes actually saw the iphone and read the data >Yeaaaaaaa

So I discionnected the iphone and wuth a big smile reconnected the thing getting ready to sync and BLAAAAAAAA. I got messages that iphone was not connected it NEVER downloaded the driver again and I can charge the phine but my computer is ignoring the phone and me for that matter.

What the heck do I do. We'll there was that glimmer that it connecect once. If you studied behaviorial psychology, this working obe provided "intermitten reinforcement" which is the mowst addictive and frustrating and it makes you work harder to keep trying again and again.

So I am frustrated, discouraged and will try differenct usb ports, cheking microsoft or the apple site, or scream anf the computer and the iphoine at the top of my lungs hoping I will wake the stupid pair up.
I will look for hop0e soon.
  • JR · 4 weeks ago
Exactly that problem. When trying to synchronize, it stars by saying that I have to authorize ITunes (!!!) when it's already authorized. Then, after some drive errors which force me to restart my PC, it starts synchronizing and it stops after 10/20 songs, saying the device timed out... Changed usb port to the back of the pc ports, took away all the other usb devices, reinstalled ITunes, changed Itunes and IPod software to Vista compability. NOTHING worked. THis after upgrading from Vista to W7...

I'm having such an issue as well. However, in my context it's the connection between outlook and iTunes which does not work (Win7 x64, Outlook 2003). The problem is related to my outlook profile which uses an exchange-account. When I create a new mail-profile using a pop-account, it seems to work.
    More details:
With the exchange account the OutlookSyncClient.exe crashes, as soon as I open the Info Tab of my iPhone in iTunes. This crash is "silent", which means I don't get an error dialog. The only trace I found was in the event log:
