I use a mac at home but cannot change the OS on my work computer to reach mobile me. In the big, bad worls when you have lost your iphone, you have to find a mac or someone running firefox to find it...or in my case wait until I am home at my mac ( involves an hour commute and a ferry ) to try an find it
BOO on apple for STILL not making mobile me universally accessible and making this new feature really useful

Re: iPhone OS 3.0 Released: What You Should Know

sooo looking forward to getting the new iphone with the new os

Re: iPhone OS 3.0 Released: What You Should Know

When does it come out and where is the nearest apple store to Bakersfield California

Re: iPhone OS 3.0 Released: What You Should Know

@ Chris:

Check out the instructions here:
http://ktula.com/2009/06/17...

Re: iPhone OS 3.0 Released: What You Should Know

As an iPhone user (addict?) myself. I was frustrated like everyone else by my inability to update my iPhone 3G to iPhone OS 3.0 due to the iPhone Activation server not being available. I wrote a quick 6 step fix for this, which has worked for myself and 14 others - flawlessly every time.

Please note: In order for the steps below to work, you MUST already have the iPhone OS 3.0 update on your PC/MAC which you downloaded either through iTunes or Apple directly.

1. Plug in your iPhone into your USB Port

2. Select Update

3. While on the Extracting screen for the update, quickly disconnect from the Internet. You MUST do this while it is extracting, as it will immediately try to contact the Apple Servers once it has extracted the update.

4. Your iPhone and iTunes will not even try to check in with Apple because they realize you are in offline mode. This will enable the update to go through and load onto your iPhone without having to call out to the Activation Server.

5. Now, when it's all done, you'll be "stuck" in emergency mode. No worries. Just unplug your iPhone from your USB (You'll still be in emergency mode) and go ahead and turn your internet back on again. Make sure to wait until your iPhone disappears from the list of devices in iTunes!

6. Once you are back online, simply plug in the iPhone USB cable again, and then iTunes will quickly activate your iPhone in a matter of just 2-3 seconds.

Enjoy iPhone OS 3.0 :)

Re: iPhone OS 3.0 Released: What You Should Know

Wish I had an iPhone - maybe I could win one by signing up for Superpass at #edufire - http://bit.ly/1B9Gi5 before 19th June

Re: iPhone OS 3.0 Released: What You Should Know

A couple of quick comments. One, I just updated my iPod touch (gen 1) no problems.

The shake to shuffle on music is kind of cool, the unified search is nice. Haven't played with copy/paste yet but that is a big deal, regardless of wishing it was available months ago.

Also, the Google Maps update is sweet (previously unavailable for the iPod touch), and I esp. like the workflow ease of looking in my immediate area, searching for a restaurant by name, seeing it on the map, clicking, seeing street view and then being able to add to address book.

All of that said, I want to put a bow around fact that this release is somewhat akin to a "block the kick" by Apple to keep developers from even contemplating developing for Android, Pre or Blackberry, so most of the feature adds are to drive developers to do even cooler stuff.

That may seem like a "SO WHAT" if you just plunked down $9.95 for the touch upgrade (as I did), but when then next 50K apps roll out, and a quarter of them take advantage of things like hardware accessory support within apps; multi-player gaming; add levels/stories/virtual goods, the new mapping and media APIs, you will be a happy camper.

If you care about such things, here is a post that I wrote on the topic:

ANALYSIS - iPhone 3.0: Block the Kick Strategy
http://bit.ly/ANdMz

Final note. Many forums are bemoaning server delays, lack of app store access today.

It's nature of the beast, when 10M people (a guess, figuring 25% out of 40M devices) simultaneously try to access and download a big fat binary, so expect delays.

If that freaks you out, wait until tomorrow. It's not like they will run out of software. :-)

Cheers,

Mark

Re: iPhone OS 3.0 Released: What You Should Know

yeah, very nice round up...keep up the good work!
