It is amazing of the number of B2B businesses that discount social media in their marketing and communication efforts. Posts like this help marketers support our social media recommendations. I have also seen great posts on how to measure results and the metrics to be measured, but have not seen actual numbers or returns reported in any posts. Can you provide some hard numbers? Thanks for the post.

This is a great post and great insight to startup companies with great products that are interested in landing big companies. A company needs to be able to google you or your executive team and say these guys know what they are doing.

Great article. The problem with most the enterprise's adoption of social media is that the results are difficult to measure. The post talks about building a reputation, researching, networking, and learning. The activities are all important, in fact crucial, to the sales and marketing effort, but the mostly indirect results from these efforts can't be conveniently plugged into a spreadsheet.

I'm surprised how few comments there are for such a good article.

I'm convinced that in the midst of plethora of content available today, we need articles that give great frameworks. I'll be able to use this again and again.

And Step 4 - I am learning more and more how important this is, to learn from others. Steve Rubel posted this social timegraph (http://www.steverubel.com/blogs-are-out-of-beta...) - Very good to remember the others are innovating and we can follow.

Very thoughtful insight on the infusion of social media in our businesses. I'm in hospitality, and as the only "Brand name" in my local market, we get a fair share of business because of our name. But now, my director of sales has a mandate to move us to facebook and twitter in short order. Funny enough, these domains are blocked on our network by websense software, so we have to find workaround, but the point is still.. "somebody at corporate is paying attention to social media" Good for them! Thanks for the insight.

    Hi Anthony -

You should chat with your IT department about enabling employee access to some Web 2.0 sites and social media sites if you're using them for work purposes. Websense actually allows safe access to Web 2.0 sites like Facebook so that you can do your job, while still protecting the corporate network from security threats. Check out www.websense.com/Web2.0atWork for more info.

Also, I'm not surprised that somebody at corporate is paying attention to social media - a recent survey about Web 2.0 in the workplace showed that many C-level executives (in addition to lines of business like sales and marketing) are pushing for more access to Web 2.0 and social media in the workplace. Pretty interesting!

In the interest of full disclosure, I should point out that I work for Websense (you probably figured that out already).

    Cheers,

    Sarah

Nice piece, but the benefits of social media in a B2B context are not only available to large enterprises. Small and mid-sized companies can also make effective use of social media in order to better serve existing customers and to find new ones.

Our site is aimed at this very space and now has 12,000 business represented, largely in the UK. We have Groups of members in particular geographies and industry sectors that you can "Buzz" -- like prebuilt Twitter followers in essence, which helps you broaden your reach. We also take members urgent business needs and pass them on sales leads to other members.

Most social media services take some working out how to use well to progress B2B biased goals, but we consider our site easier to get to grips with and get benefit from quickly.

I agree with you Ben especially on your point about standing out by building a reputation of expertise and networking. It is important to stand out among the crowd with the tremendous amount of information available on the internet. Two of the better ways are exactly your points 1 & 3.

Great tips and very nicely written! Social networking will soon become the most effective way of building your professional career and creating a personal brand. However, one will have to invest time in learning the effectiveness of these sites and ways to use them properly.

By the way, I am new to LinkedIn too and have found this resource quite useful. It is a new book called "How to REALLY use LinkedIn" by networking expert Jan Vermeiren. Check it out, you can find a free lite version at http://www.how-to-really-use-linkedin.com/

    Excellent article!
Nobody denies the power of social media but not many companies know how to use it in a effective way. This truth is even bitter when it comes to B2B. This article shows, in a very clear way, how important Social Media can be for B2B and how to do it.
