Mashable - The Social Media Guide: HOW TO: Track Swine Flu Online

  • RKW · 7 months ago
Yeah! Thanks. I don't know why but I freaked out a bit this morning. I've got juvenile diabetes, http://www.jdrf.org/. That means my immune system is a little weak and they recommend we get yearly flu shots. My mild Twitter-induced meltdown lead me to the CDC webpage, but you've listed so much more to monitor how it's spreading. Thanks.
  • Bek · 7 months ago
I have Type 1 Diabetes as well...I totally understand your concern. Even I forget, sometimes, how much more susceptible we are to complications from certain infectious diseases. Most people w/o 'betes don't realize that what makes them just feel miserable until whatever it is runs it's course can put us in the hospital (or 6 feet under).
  • RKW · 7 months ago
I can edit this one but not the first one. BTW, the comment below is correct.

With our weak immune systems, we'll get through this better as it's the reaction to the virus and not the virus itself that kills.

Here is a link to that comment, http://mashable.com/2009/04/25/track-swine-flu/... ,and a link to Dr. Sanjay Gupta of CNN saying the same thing, http://www.cnn.com/2009/HEALTH/04/27/gupta.qanda/

I guess having IDDM isn't ALL bad.
    _____________________________

Yeah, folks just freak out about needles but don't get it's more serious than that. Let's hope folks with compromised immune systems track this. I know I'll let folks know about the options listed here.

Most important, don't take any government vaccinations! Strengthen your immune system!
  • Richard · 7 months ago
How exactly are 'government vaccinations' going to weaken your immune system? If there are enough vaccine shots produced in time, they are one of the few things that could actually save people from a widespread pandemic.

    Stop spreading anti-scientific misinformation.
  • Corey · 7 months ago
You tube..."Ron Paul on Swine Flu." Interesting what he shares, about how in 1976, there was a panic, and one person died of the flu, without having the vaccination....and 27 died who did. Makes ya kinda wonder?
  • Rachel · 6 months ago
do you know for a fact that those patients died directly as a result of the vaccine.
Did you study them personally and have medical education and expertise?
It' sounds like you have watched tooooo many conspiracy movies.....
  • Dave · 7 months ago
Dude. Vaccines work. Stop spreading misinformation. The guy who claimed to have found a link between vaccines and autism admitted to faking his data:

Are there any meds for this? Where can I get them? I live in Dallas.
  • Peter · 7 months ago
Yes, there are a few. The best I think is Tamiflu (Oseltamivir) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oseltamivir
Here in the UK you can get it at most local pharmacies. Also sometimes I buy from local UK online clinics, this is a good site to find
real brand tamiflu from Roche http://www.pharmacy-reviews.co.uk
    Then there are also vaccines
  • Corey · 7 months ago
Rumsfeld pushed for Tamiflu in the past, a company he was once CEO for. And he was very successful in getting your tax dollars. Now he again, is in the private sector. Food for thought????

I bought masks as a precaution this morning. I am afraid that suppliers might start running out with the high demand. I purchased them from a company in Minnesota who had them in stock. Here's the link if you need it. http://www.airwareamerica.com/3mn95respirators....
  • David Ortez · 7 months ago
you do know that a mask will do nothing to protect you. It will mentally be useful but unless you have a mask on with an inverted respirator connected to your own oxygen tank 24/7, there is not much you can do ... sorry and that is coming from a medical perspective.

The absolute last thing you want to do is strengthen your immune system. Does no one know anything about immunology on here before they start spouting? The 1918 flu (the closest thing we have to the current virus) induced a cytokine storm in mouse models. ie it is the immune response to the virus that will kill you, NOT THE VIRUS. This means that young healthy, fully immunocompetent people are the people who will experience the cytokine storm to it's full extent, and ultimately die. Younger people without a fully challenged immune system, people who are immunosupressed (yes, diabetics etc) are much more likely to survive. Not many older individuals will even show symptoms. This is going to be a young and healthy persons problem. Read up on things before you get the immunosupressed community having MI's please.
  • annette · 7 months ago
amy, i believe you are correct
  • Dave · 7 months ago
Yes I've heard several doctors make this same point. The more "healthy" your immune system, the stronger the inflammatory response, breathing problems etc. Tamiflu can shorten the course of the illness though if taken soon enough.
  • RKW · 7 months ago
Yeah, I'll live! So I'm going to stop washing my hands!!! ;) Sorry, maybe not the best time for a joke. I just know that I get a flu shot every year and I hate it. But I do it because they stress that diabetics ought to.

However, if having a suppressed immune system means game on, then, yeah! I'm still very much a germ-o-phobe though. I'm someone who refuses to touch things with her hands in a public restroom. It's just so gross to see people walk out and NOT wash their hands. Ugh.

I knew there had to be some benefit to all the many blood tests I have to do and this little insulin pump I have to wear ;)

But in all seriousness, I've found a link that verifies that's how this disease plays out with strong immune systems. Links help, so share the sources. Thanks. Good ol' Dr. Sanjay Gupta said the same thing: http://www.cnn.com/2009/HEALTH/04/27/gupta.qanda/

Are you guys nuts? People are dropping like flies and you suggest googling for answers and staying calm. Prozac has dried up people!!!. Action needs to be taken to prevent the extinction of the human race. I suggest boarding up your house and gathering food for the next 6 months. Also remember clean water. People laughed at Noah, but he survived. Now is the time to take action

One of the fears of the Obama Bug is lack of containment and not getting to the person who has contracted it in time. Just to know that there could be carriers anywhere, in any major population center, is reason enough for precautionary safeguards to be enforced.
  • Tom Gearman · 7 months ago
The best defense is washing your hands frequently, and if you are out in public, wear a FDA approved respirator.

The FDA approved respirators are available to the general public directly from 3M Corporation through their on-line store. There are two styles of NIOSH N95 certified respirators at www.Shop3M.com: a flat-fold (Model 8670F) that stores easily in a purse, and a cup style (Model 8612F). Additional information, including product usage instructions, is available at www.my3MN95.com.

TS TAN: We truly are More Fortunate than our Grandparents' era back in 1918-19 when Over Forty Million people Died from a Pandemic Flu Outbreak. My mother remembers All the Family Members, her parents and two (2) brothers and sisters being so Sick they were crawling around the house on their hands and knees. The Only person in the Family who didn't get sick was my Aunt, who ended up Caring For the rest of the Family. Luckily noone in the Family died; but they were All Seriously Ill w/High Fever and Flu Symptoms for 7-14 days.

In addition, I have had a FLU SHOT for the last 20 plus years. Because I have Not traveled recently and Do Not plan to do so in the next couple months I am not too concerned. Hopefully with the New Containment Measures being taken @ all the AIRPORTS both in the USA and around the World we will be successful in preventing a serious Global Pandemic like the one that occurred between the years 1918-1919 during my Grandparents era. Feeling confident & safe in America, Donna K

While I believe there is a very real threat that a pandemic could occur at any point, this swine flu story seems like a rehash of SARS and the Avian flu, two diseases that were a grave threat to humanity. I'm not saying this is not the real thing, perhaps it is, but worrying about it now is only going decrease the quality of your life for the next few weeks, durig which time my guess is that there was not much to fear in the first place.

Furthermore, if this does turn into a true pandemic in which millions, perhaps hundreds of millions around the globe die, what are you going to do with that information? I suppose you could stay in your home, which would do very little if this makes the jump to being spread through the air. It's the same thing as NASA coming out tomorrow and saying there is an asteroid that will hit earth in 3 months and will wipe out all human life and there is nothing we can do to stop it. What are you going to do with that information? Not much is what I would do.

So, this could be bad, we don't know, but don't let it affect your life in any way. You still have a better chance of being killed on your commute to work tomorrow than by swine flu.

If you do get the swine flu disease then i suggest that you stay very calm about it and make sure that you do not let someone else suffer and let them catch the disease as well. HealthMap, under "Diseases, last 30 days", now lets you select "Swine flu H1N1".
Also, try selecting ProMED Mail, World Health Organization and EuroSurveillance for a less cluttered but more accurate picture of the situation. The less authoritative news feeds could be added for earlier warning of developments though a less reliable picture overall.
  • George · 7 months ago
As even a cursory look will show, "HealthMap" really just aggregates and maps ALL news ABOUT outbreaks, NOT actual notifications of outbreaks, It is one of those insidious, irresponsible online tools that spread panic. For example, click on one of the ominously orange "pins" and it turns out it links to an article about how it's "business as usual" at the FSD airport ("Despite Outbreak, Business As Usual At FSD"): the article really is about no outbreaks reported, and yet gets put on the map with a pin. How irresponsible.

The swine flu is a man-made virus, just like Aids. Of you have not got it, you will get it and other man made viruses - if you take th vaccine the will come out with shortly - the vaccine already exists - it will be announced shortly - one there's a pandemic - then they will announce a vaccine has been developed and it will then be sold world wide and someone will make alot of money - this process of money making is known by such names as: 'government sponsored terror'; 'false flag ops', 'capitalism/socialism'; 'war on the third world'. Stay alert - stay away from this and all other vaccines - do not let them vaccinate your children - vaccines destroy your immune system - and in future they bring out a stronger flu virus and it WILL wipe you out because you have the disarming vaccine in you. Remember no one cares -so take care of yourself and love your neighbor. Pass this info on. NO ONE CAN FIGHT ALONE. THESE ZIONIST JEWS ARE THE ONES RIGHT AT THE TOP BEHIND THIS PLOT - IT IS DESIGNED TO WIPE OUT BROWN AND BLACK SKINNED PEOPLE.

"Stay Calm, Stay Informed". When you tell someone to stay calm, that's just the incentive to do the opposite. You're telling them that it's really a horrible situation, and so, please, "stay calm!"

It doesn't help that you label the swine flu as being "fatal". This whole article is just hysterical fear-mongering. If you do some online reading from experts, you will see that there is little cause for concern, although the H1N1 strain should be closely watched nevertheless.

The fact is that outside Mexico, where there may be secondary factors which are causing so many deaths (including another disease), the cases throughout the rest of the world have been pretty mild. E.g., check out this article hosted by National Geographic:

"U.S. Swine Flu No Worse Than Seasonal Flu, Experts Say"

My daughter got sick last week on Thursday 21st of May from a girl who was sick and was sent home by the school nurse. I took my daughter to the doctor told her her symptoms and she tested her in the office and she tested positive for the flu vivrus A which the swine flu falls under the doctor gave her tamiflu and motrin for the fever I called the school to report to them of my daughters illness. I wanted them to do something they said they can not do anything if I had a complaint call 311 I even spoke to the principle I told her if they do not close the school and make it safe for children I would not be sending my daughter back for the rest of the year.
She could get re infected. She said that it would be up to me but she would still be marked absent so big deal it is not worth her life. The school is one of the biggest Middle Schools in Queens M.S. 210 Elizabeth Blackwell Middle School if any one reading this has a child in this school beware the school has over 2,000 students 30+ children are being sent home each day.
The school says they have to have a certain number of students sick in order to be put on the list to be closed. I do not really have any idea how or if they are tracking this but my daughter is not to return to school unless they wash down the school just like the other schools. These kids at M.S. 210 are just at risk the same as other kids that there school closed and was washed. I know even if they close and wash down the schools there may still be kids who get sick but it will cut down and help parents get a little peace of mind.
