Mashable - The Social Media Guide: HOW TO: Take Your Data Back From Google’s Claws

  • ctovision · 10 months ago
This is a very timely article and very much appreciated. Like many other small businesses I really enjoy the empowering capabilities of Google, including sites, documents, gmail etc etc. But I have a fear of lock-in and have been thinking about ways to ensure my business is not totally dependent on one provider. Your article helps me do that.

I believe the time has come for all cloud computing providers to work together to build open APIs that will make movement of data between the various clouds easier. That will end up helping all users and the good companies out, I'm sure.

    Thanks again.

it would have been really helpful if you had also given alternatives. e.g. simply downloading your mail via pop decreases your mobility. you'd be better off by running your own hosting with an imap webmailer and a local backup strategy. you know where I'm going? something similiar to this as an alternative to simply going local...

Well i tried gladinet at http://www.gladinet.com/ and it was easy as hell to setup google docs and picasa as an extra drive. Then i just copied the docs and pictures to an memory stick or you could use the harddrive.

The best is i could use the 25GB microsoft skydrive live account aswell. Now i can backup my pictures to more than one place if i want. :)

Rather than POP for Gmail, you can use IMAP to sync specific folders (including your All Mail folder) to a local email client such as Outlook on a regular basis -- Outlook can sync in the background as frequently as you wish. Then, all of those messages are available offline (a must for me since I spent a lot of time on planes) and can be moved to other non-IMAP folders if you want to move off Gmail.

As far as backing up Gmail there is another solution. It's the reverse of what you wrote, with the originating email account resending every email to Gmail. There is no TOS conflict if you setup your system this way.

Thanks for the very useful post.

There is an assumed reliance on Google due to the services they provide. While in most cases this reliance has a good basis as it is not typically something you would need to worry about, it still deserves some thought. As I learned when I was going to school (IS & Robotics) save early save often, backups are your friend. Just be sure you manage the OCD like behavior of saving/backing up.

I used to think that once Google has your files, you can never retrieve them anymore. This is very helpful, thanks!

Google is getting all powerful but as long as it can been seen to be doing the right thing it should be ok otherwise it could be difficult to tame the beast further on down the line

With the addition of feedburner into Google's empire, you also need to be careful about keeping your feed within your grips as well. For anyone that is using feedburner and isn't already using its 'My Brand' feature, I *highly* suggest taking a close look at http://FeedPhoenix.com as a very fast and simple way to make sure that you can take your feeds out of the hands of FeedBurner/Google in the future.

Where does the TOS say you can't download all your mail? Gmail's help docs has an entry explaining how to backup all your email with POP.

Honestly I would be pretty devastated if google just collapsed now that you made me think about it. I have a lot of non critical but still useful data hidden away in various google apps. I've been meaning to read the articles here on personal data protection as it was recommended to me but haven't had a chance yet.

Stan : Nice post! Other than Google Docs/Zoho you mentioned, GMail users can have their email backed up in Zoho Mail.

It's free, opensource, requires NET or Mono and runs on Win and Linux.

Check out Gladinet Cloud Desktop at http://www.gladinet.com. Its free and makes it very easy to backup google docs and spreadsheets. You can mount your google docs folders as local folders on your desktop and then move files back and forth between google and your desktop like you would with any other local folder. You can also create scheduled backups of local content to Google Docs or a Redundant Array of Cloud Storage.
