Love this post. I have not been to a TweetUp yet but these helpful tips will definitely be something that I will think about.

Wow - i so broke the rules! Well - some of them. For our "TOC Bookish TweetUp"
we didn't have name tags (my fault - i *meant* to), there was no wi-fi,
and there was an open bar. BUT - we did have the wonderful Mr. Chris Brogan stop
by, we DID check out the venue first, and we used eventbrite - which if i may
    say so - ROCKS!
For what it's worth - nametags - totally didn't matter -- everyone kind of figured
out who everyone was by sight - and I got to play hostess and figure it out
    if it wasn't obvious.
Also, not having wifi - turned out to be a non-issue. Everyone was so excited to
talk in person, that not only was there no obvious tweeting taking place, i actually
forgot to take any pictures of the event! And it was one wonderful event.
Maybe Bookish Tweeps are the exception!

What a great set of tips. I've already circulated them to my colleagues!

I would also add - be ready for the intensity of the Tweetup. Remember people have already got beyond introductions through Twitter. So conversation jumps straight into where you would normally be 15 minutes into a normal encounter with someone you have never met.

    Enjoy!

can we call it a twitcluster instead? it seems much more apropos.

In Amsterdam the Twitterazi have been organizing a lot tweetups these past 2 years, and it's been a lot of fun. Ofcourse wi-fi is a must! The bar we always went to, got it specially for us 'phonepeople', as they would call us. Http://www.vimeo.com/twitterborrels

One of the most informative articles I have read here at mashable!

Must read for us that want to learn how to really take advantage of Twitter. One of these days I will participate in a Tweetup myself - and now you gave me some great insight to prepare myself.

    Article is bookmarked and tweeted...

    Cheers...

Looks like a bit like the local blogging scene? I’ve exchanged comments and emails with quite a few folk, and am aware that some must live within a few mile's of me. fact is?, I’ve never met any one from online off-line as yet but you guys n gals make it look like its fun fun fun ...

Great post. I 100% agree with the visit the venue before you host a tweet up there. The restaurant promoter/manager will say the space is bigger than it really is therefor less people can fit there. Even if you don't live in the area where you want to host the Tweet up I would see if anyone on Twitter has been to the location before.
That being said here are a few add-ons for your post: 8 Tips for Attending a Tweetup

Great tips! We haven't had the large tweetups yet in our area...but we are getting there!
  • Tom · 8 months ago
That's pretty funny that you mention Sonny Gill, he's in my area and is well aware of the local tweetup group, but hasn't tried to attend a single tweetup. I guess that makes him an expert! I should never visit California and call myself the expert on San Francisco.

Great article! I have co-organized the first tweetup in our community of Ogden,Utah for this evening. We have had a great response. If it goes well, we will look forward to many more! http://twitter.com/OgdenTweetup

Great advice. Having coordinated a Tweetup in Perth and about to coordinate Australia-wide tweetups on Anzac Day, I can say that I was able to tick my way through your Do list.
Thanks for making it simple for people!

I won't say something not real. The truth is I had never use Tweetup but would like to try now. I am an active member in Twitter though. You know I am a fan of DIY and I like doing things by myself. I like copy things like dvd or convert them to any format like from mp3 to zune, to psp and etc. I had found many persons who have same hobby in Twitter and we enjoy ourselves very much.

Great article Stuart! Two other tips... publicize a hashtag early and often! It gets the buzz going, and brings people together! And, if you're in the Boston area, tell @BostonTweetUp about your event so we can publicize it for you!

If you're looking to promote events (like you would inside Facebook or via Twitter), you should check out http://www.playster.org. You can add events directly into the search index and traffic gets sent to your site or blog.

    Enjoy!
