Mashable - The Social Media Guide: HOW TO: Manage Multiple Social Media Profiles

  • Shama Kabani · 9 months ago
    Absolutely!

    Very well organized.

I am a huge fan of ping.fm and will have to check out atomkeep.
  • Shama Kabani · 9 months ago
Update: Atomkeep is not currently accepting new registrations.
  • Ben Parr · 9 months ago
Interesting. I'll be sure to ping them about it, I'm sure it's just temporary. Thanks for the heads-up!
  • Phillip Moxley · 9 months ago
Atom Keep also doesn't work well because it's in beta. I had to drop it.
  • johnsamuel · 9 months ago
You have introduced a lot of services which can be utilized to manage multiple social networking profiles. Thanks for the same. Though I do not complete agree with your view on joining all the social networking profiles because then you have to remember multiple passwords. But your opinion of joining them so that people are not confused by your names appearing in a social service you haven't joined is valid
  • scott lukaitis · 9 months ago
I intend to check this out but is there a similar service that will support posting on several message boards?

I have to say I've resorted to using Retaggr as a method of keeping track of where my profiles are. The purpose of Retaggr is supposed to be to show off what you use as a form of e-business card but I find it a really useful place just to keep track of which user names I'm using where, and try to keep it updated as I sign up to new stuff.

The staff are really good at keeping things up to date over there
  • Zackatoustra · 9 months ago
    Thanks Luke,
Retaggr is indeed a good place to centralize all those user names.
  • Brenda Heisler · 9 months ago
I stumbled on Retaggr and it really makes sense. It's so easy to use. I like the fact I can find everything in one central place. When you add a new website you just fill in your username and your "business card" is updated. Works for me.
  • ahynes1 · 9 months ago
I've been using Retagger for quite a while as well. However, they don't have a good API for retrieving information, so I've been moving over to mostly using dandyid.org instead.
  • niksmit · 9 months ago
@ahynes1 The good news is that a Retaggr API is in the works :)
  • ahynes1 · 9 months ago
Good to know. I'd love to kick it around a little whenever you're ready for testers.

Check out my recent blog posts on http://www.orient-lodge.com/socnet

for some of my recent thoughts about building a social network contact management system, which relates nicely to this blog post and explains why I want to get to a good API
  • niksmit · 9 months ago
Some interesting ideas in your post - understand your need for the API. Would be great to have you as a tester on that - I'll definitely ping you closer to the time - thanks.

If anyone else is interested in similar access, please do drop me a line at retaggr.com/Contact

    Thanks!

Aside from twitter being the worst at helping the cause (by defaulting to emailing you when ever someone follows or twitters you!), Step 2. Choose Your Platforms Realistically, usually works in those cases where you are (essentially) squatting on your name or not using the account once you sign up just in order to hold it "just in case", can sometimes trigger certain sites into reminding you every 30 days, so you have to wonder how long will it be before all of the social sites start requiring regular active use of the services? We just might all get a little busier, and maybe there would grow a market for personal login bots set to login every 10 or 20 days or so (the old "keep-alive" trick through clever scripting).
  • ap · 9 months ago
Well, its easy to change the default settings on twitter to not receving notifications of DMs, a new follow or not updating in 24hrs. So no big deal there. If its free, no reason you should not hold on to a name. I have plenty of referral partners/business contactsI that register domain names yet they never create a site there. Owning the rights to a name is important for branding purposes for some businesses. Interestingly enough, did hear that some social media networks are purging inactive or stagnant profiles. so, signing up may force you to keep you.

Do not forget HelloTxt than now has the Reading feature from your social network!!!
  • Petronilla Paperdoll · 9 months ago
a very cool tool to update social media is HelloTxt, http://hellotxt.com/ . My favorite one.
  • Shane Harris · 9 months ago
There is a better way to manage social networking sites: don't use them. They are without value.
  • ap · 9 months ago
Well, that's a bold statement in the internet age and without support details, your comment has no value to me. I've gotten business from social/biz networking online. It just one of 5 sources of business for me. I spend 80% of my time on the activities that generate the most income for me. 20% on social media sites and since most are free, it's well worth 1-2 hours per day.
  • Zackatoustra · 9 months ago
    Thnaks Ben,
This is hard work organizing the "net identity" consistently.
And, since I'd like my nickname (zackatoustra) to be used by me and only me (isn't that the purpose of building a real net identity?!)
I used the link you provided to checkusernames.com and, indeed, I have a lot of social applications that i know of, without having an account...

Thank you for good advice. I'm using some of these social networks, but it's hard to keep fresh on them. I'm trying to use TwitterFeed and FriendFeed to update my new blog posts to Twitter.

What a pity that Atomkeep is not available for register now. I wanna to try it.

Thanks a lot for this article.
  • Armen · 9 months ago
I have a whole rube goldberg setup that has Ping.fm at one end and FriendFeed and Twitter at the other. I blog about it and have a drawing. In truth the fact that these services have public api's which allow aggregation and might I say conduitazation allows one to ping at one end and make sure that friendfeed spreads and twitter captures.
  • letterrep · 2 months ago
hi...what's your blog? I'd love to see the Rube-Goldberg. rob [at] letterrep.com

    Haven't check out Atomkeep yet - ...
  • Bastiano · 9 months ago
Thanks for the information, I've put it in practice.
While more social networks and interactivity in the web, more sites of synthesis to do everything from one place to the rest of all your networks. I like it.

This article comes at a perfect time, as we have just launched a new product that does just what this article asks for: OrSiSo, which stands for Organize, Simplify and Socialize.

We have built a new Adobe AIR app that hooks into Facebook, Flickr, Twitter and LinkedIn and it allows you to merge your friends different contacts into one unique profile, as well as set filters to turn off the firehose of notifications you get from your various networks so you prioritise information that comes from people you want to hear from!

You can find out more and download the software from our website at http://www.orsiso.com

Please use the registration code 'PB32B8RW', it's valid for a limited number of signups so go for it!

  • Lee Gets Jiggy with the Social · 9 months ago
    So glad you posted this.

I am so aware of the need to utilize social networks to be an effective (and profitable) marketer, but lately I had been feeling bombarded with all the NEW savvy sites and invites.

Ironically, I realize the internet is still in its infancy; so there's lots more to come.

I'd better get organized now to handle the anticipated avalanche of business to come. :-D

    Thanks again.

    Hey,

A couple of tips I have found are, some sites like twitter will add other social networks like facebook to it. So when I twit it shows on my facebook account as well.

Secondly, GMX will take many popular email address domain and link them so they all show in one inbox. I hope my thoughts are useful.

I've found a great way of keeping track of my social accounts. In fact any site that needs a username and password www.lastpass.com. There are widgets for Firefox and IE unfortunately not Chrome (nothing new there)

You can set folders to group your bookmarks. It allows you to auto login and autofill. It's web based so accessable worldwide and nobody can hack your pc to find passwords.

I've also used your tip and signed up for a whole lot more sites where my username was available.

    Cheers

Great Post. Managing several social networking sites is really time consuming and tedious. If you don't have enough time to do this yourself, hire a virtual assistant who can manage all your social networking sites for you.
  • Jim Hobson · 4 months ago
Excellent summary of getting started and managing your online branding in the Social Media realm. As mentioned by the stunning Shama, AtomKeep is not accepting new accounts so you may want to modify this information. You did a very nice job! Thanks!
