Nice list of job hunting resources on Twitter. As someone who has been in the situation of seeking and finding a job via social media, here are some of the techniques that worked for me. The most important thing is the old Keith Ferrazzi adage, "Build it before you need it". Networking should be an important daily activity in your adult life, whether you use Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, or the old-fashioned telephone. Having said that, Twitter will increase the velocity of a job search if done right, but the seeker needs to use all of the tools (blog, social media resume, Linkedin, Twitter and Facebook to name a few) at their disposal in an integrated manner. Being open and candid about your search is critical so that you can let your network know how to help you. Ask specific people in your network for specific things like referrals, references, blog posts, meetings that you think can help you. Be gracious and thank people for the help that you receive. And most importantly, don't rely only on Twitter or your other online networks, get on the phone and knock on doors.

But when all of these activities are pursued in an integrated manner, the results can be dramatic and quick.

Nice! I got hired using Twitter last fall! I think it had more to do with personal branding and actually asking. Honesty. I was wondering when this would pop up.

Great article, but you need to go back and check your facts. Twitter only allows for 140 characters, not 160.

I agree with warrenss that LinkedIn is a good tool for networking as well, and I think it's more business/career driven than Twitter. Some people may not want potential employers reading their Twitter stream! I think it's better for employers to get the word out there that they are hiring, rather than for the employees searching for a job. But if you're using Twitter to network and make contacts, that's always beneficial.

    Sarah,

What a great, creative resource for job-seekers in a down market.

When I was downsized 22 months ago during the collapse of the sub-prime mortgage industry, it was a very different economy and job market. I was fortunate to find a great job in 54 days, primarily using Indeed.com, TheLadders.com, and some great cover letter advice from Jeffrey Fox, author of "How To Land Your Dream Job" (that $16 book was worth 20 times its price, for the resu-letter advice alone).

More recently I have seen executive friends struggle through very difficult searches for 12+ months, with very little recent activity and significantly increased competition. I hope your article helps the creative and resourceful among job-seekers find new avenues to make valuable networking connections.

Follow JobSerf on Twitter at http://www.twitter.com/jobserf

JobSerf.com is another business model that only searches for jobs BUT also submits your online application. No one else does this! JobSerf.com is also fee-based, however, this comes out to less than four dollars an hour. Only JobSerf.com can do both - search and submit your online application!

Compare our cost and value before you decide which service to use! Our cost includes setup where you can submit several resumes and cover letters. You can even specify your search terms. Each day we send you a file detailing the position we applied to on your behalf. Then you can start networking into the company.

WiHire is a free online community that helps people find and fill jobs by allowing users to broadcast their job information to their online networks. It is a known fact that most jobs are found and filled through personal networks, but still people continue to hunt for jobs on job boards that grow more impacted each day. WiHire helps users easily leverage existing networks like Facebook, Linked In, Twitter, MySpace, Gmail, and Blogger to help get a job or fill an open position. This service promotes community involvement to help users and their friends find the right job or hire the right employee.

The founders said, "We wanted to do our part to help improve the economic situation so we are providing this pro-bono service to the public. WiHire is our gift to everyone that is struggling in these tough economic times."
