Mashable - The Social Media Guide: HOW TO: Do Good on LinkedIn

  • Carolyna Loveless · 3 months ago
To promote my socially conscious, green project I incorporated a Google Doc into my Profile, so those visiting my site can scroll through a mini-proposal and get an idea of the conscious efforts of our company as well as the professional endeavors.

I enjoyed writing thoughtful recommendations for my connections until I was informed that my company was in the process writing a policy to forbid the practice. Imagine my disappointment when I was advised that I had to call one of my connections and ask them to remove my recommendation from their profile page.

    Ugh, that sucks.

I don't even understand the reasoning behind such a policy, nor do I understand your company's ability to limit your ability to make a personal recommendation. Depending on how marketable you are, I might have gone to battle with the company over such a policy ... they really don't have the right to tell you what to do in your free time.

    Mashable should write about this!

I actually don't see the Events tab on my LinkedIn page - is this part of the upgrade package?
  • Christina Warren · 3 months ago
No, it's part of the free LinkedIn -- check your Apps Sidebar and see if it is listed there.

For LinkedIn recommendations, I think its better to wait until someone asks you for a recommendation. They may not want my recommendation and don't want to post it if I do give them one. Then they feel awkward about not publicizing it.

I find that if you freely give a recommendation you want to give, you invariably get an even better one in return. I don't think I've ever asked for a recommendation.

Excellent overview of how to really Pay It Forward using LinkedIn! Pay It Forward should be the central theme of any social networking one does, and I am happy to see @Mashable covering all of the bases!

Another great way to use LinkedIn is to forward your friend's profiles to Executive Recruiters who many call you as part of a search project they are working on. I guarantee you that these profile forwards get read and seriously considered by Search firms if you are a trusted partner / contact to them.
