Mashable - The Social Media Guide: HOW TO: Create Groups for Twitter

  • JaWar · 9 months ago
Wow I didn't know all of these options were available. I wonder if Twitter
is loosing money and market share by not employing some of these services
in house, since users obviously want them.
  • Musmula · 9 months ago
Intridea's Present.ly has been providing group functionality for in its micro-blogging tool. many corporations have been using it actively (behind the firewall - customized according to the company's needs). Feel free to check it out: www.present.ly

I wonder how many folks will actually do this on Tweeter. Most of the other social networking sites have this function at a click of a button.
  • Chad Etzel · 9 months ago
TweetGrid (as silverton mentioned) just enabled a powerful grouping feature. You can read how to do it here: http://tweetgrid.com/news
  • Ed Pimentl · 9 months ago
http://TwitR.Me supports Twitter private groups, via its
    Cross SocialNetwork Messaging BUS.
  • Lance · 9 months ago
rolago.com has this *exact* feature. It's awesome.

    Your Own Twitter Service:

Try another free open source microblogging site:

    http://www.Jisko.net

    https://launchpad.net/jisko

The integration with Twitter (momentarily not available) and the UI are great.

  • Darren · 9 months ago

PeopleBrowsr.com is another one that deserves a mention. Essentially a
web-based TweetDeck. Accessible from any PC!

Why dont you name Mashabale as Twiller 2.0

I think this place is becomming too much obsessed with Twitter and Twits and Tweets
Earlier it used to be fun visiting this place to find out about newbies, but lately, all you can find on this side is Tweets and Twits and what not.

Pls cater to the non Twit readers also who i think must be the bulk of reader out there.
  • Patternhead · 9 months ago
Great article, always wondered about groups and Twitter.

Interesting to see how many services are springing up around twitter!

I created a NING site specifically for Holistic People on Twitter,
and I just signed up for Twittbot under the account
    http://www.Twitter.com/HolisticLinks

It's helping me get to know the people who are passionate about what I am too.

Interesting note in tweetworks privacy policy:

"Once provided, Tweetworks retains the right to use your email address for communication and other purposes, even if you cancel membership, as described more completely below."
  • Musmula · 9 months ago
@Christopher isn't that pretty boiler plate for any tool?

@Andy I think the groups on identi.ca are public, correct?
I think the big idea is having private groups under a microblogging tool. That way, enterprise can begin taking advantage of these social media options internally (which Present.ly provides, and that is why I use it)

Great post! I'd like to comment on "blu" (formerly known as *Chirp). It's a great Windows Vista client (I use it on Windows 7), and you can grab it here: http://www.thirteen23.com/experiences/desktop/blu/
    cheers,

I didn't know how interesting & powerful twitter would be until I watched a webinar from Hubspot people. Now here you are, giving advice on all these additional tools & apps to make twitter experience better! This is terrific and I thank you for sharing this information! I'm thinking of getting tweetworks! Thanks!

Super-disappointed in Mashable now after reading the entry on TweetDeck - that client has so many problems, it just plain sucks, and yet Mashable's comments on it are all happy-happy-hooray.

If I can't trust you to say anything accurate about a product I HAVE tried, why would I ever waste the time reading more from you about the products I haven't tried?

Useless, useless, useless. It would have been good, but it's tainted by your refusal to delve into anything honest.
  • Paisano · 9 months ago
    @Mark
Sorry to hear your take on mashable, this post and tweetdeck. Obviously you had a bad experience with Tweetdeck which is by far the most popular client for Twitter according to recent statistics. As far as questioning the honesty and integrity of anyone from Mashable, I have to disagree with you there. All of us do our best to share our most honest opinion about anything we're reviewing or recommending. This doesn't mean everyone will agree with our selections or opinions. Obviously, you disagree vehemently in this case which is fine. You have the right to do so. However, I hope you don't let these occasional differences of opinion prevent you from enjoying the useful information we feel that we provide on Mashable. Please continue to share your opinion whenever you don't agree - We want to hear the good and the bad (hopefully mostly good).

I wish Twitter would come out with a groups feature - oh well.

I just read this article and it looks like I'll give TweetDeck a try. Thanks.
  • RayDuff · 9 months ago

  • JD Lusan · 9 months ago
Love this idea of groups...guess it works great for people following thousands of people too.
  • holdemtalkradio · 8 months ago
    What are you doing?
  • trendschau · 8 months ago
Does anybody know a twitter-tool, that let's you
    1. create a private Twitter-Group and
    2. let's you integrate that group into your own webpage, so that people can twitter directly on your page (maybee kinda widget)?

That would be nice to bind a thematic fitting group of people to your homepage (instead of a forum). But if you use a stand alone solution like the wp prologue theme, people have to create an account only for your page, that's a bit too much I think.

So maybee present.ly is the right one, but a twitter app. would be more suitable. Maybee you know a solution?

In this day and age where it's becoming more and more difficult to grow a segmented list, Twitter is salvation.

IN the end this just defeats the purpose of Twitter.
You are no longer following lots of people, you are just following a few. And if you do not get in some one's group(s) you are out.
Next people can check which groups they are in, dump all other followers. Or drop out of Twitter if not in any groups.
