Just tried MyTweetSpace, but am not impressed. You can enter contact information, but it doesn't have intelligent line breaks so the text is staggered. The picture resizing is bad too, it squishes my bio photo. The selection of professional backgrounds is paltry, either you pick a blue bar or a black bar. Going to try one of the other options now....

Loved this article. I don’t see the majority of the backgrounds on Twitter because I use 1024 X 768 resolution.

I agree, I don't understand why everyone is designing twitter background to work for 1280px width and above. That's excluding at least 40% of computer users.

The specs provided in the PSD was 1800 pixels wide, but this article suggests 1600. Either way, on my screen, my photo and the box is covered by the central content. Is it the case on other people's screens or just mine?

Be interesting to do a graph on commonality of metaphores (desk, face pic, design motif, character, contact details, etc). For someone else who has time, though. ;)

Major issue I find is not allowing for scale across all browser types. Try to hide some elements for wide-screen laptops and standard resolutions.

I don't know about all of them but the background I got from there is too small. It looks great on my netbook but tiles on my desktop's wider screen. I love it but I'm changing it as soon as I find another one I like.

BTW, I use paint for creating a twitter background in minutes so if you want free one, design one in MS paint. It's cool and handy for everyone.

Of course, take screen resolution into account, but also think about whether you are using a widescreen display and if you anticipate others to do the same. Another thing is to pay attention to detail when using a stretegically placed stripe (ex. @mashable @danschawbel), because it will appear differently depending on what browser you use. You can't even read @danschawbel's contact info when using Internet Explorer.

We used alot of these tips when we first began making our free backgrounds at TwitterBackground.com. We have done so many now, that we have it down to a science. We'll post a blog with the specific details and problems when making them. Maybe Ben can post a referal to us?

Thanks All, but NO ONE in any of these links on creating your own Twitter backgrounds discusses the clickable components & links on the sides of the background. Like buttons to link to FaceBook, LinkedIn, a website, a blog, etc. If what is being uploaded is a static PowerPoint picture, then how do all these become clickable and linkable? Am I missing something here?
