"There was a problem with your picture. Was it an animated gif? We don't support those!"
My background is not animated gif. In fact, i tried both gif and jpg and both brought on the same error message.
* Pixel Perfect Photoshop Template for Twitter backgrounds: http://ozh.in/k8
But nowadays, most of the user who are using LCD + wide screen resolution (16:9) will be able to view it properly.
For 4:3 user like me, it's hard to view it properly.
Unless I decided to look at it by viewing the background image which this function is available in Mozilla Firefox.
My Twitter is http://twitter.com/anthonyvanbeek (no profile pic yet)
Thank-you for compiling these resources.

I think it is necessary to have a background that suit your personality or brand.

.
It is a lot of fun to see all the different Twitter backgrounds and the creativity that some people have.
I have added a free Twitter Background maker to BlogDumps, so if you are not creative you can make a cool background in minutes. I thought it would be a fun thing to have on my site for the members and general public to use.
All the best

I had a go at creating my own background that I was pleased with initially on my laptop but then when I saw it on other monitors I wasn't as impressed.
I have tweaked it now with your 1600 x 1200 recommendations.
I also created a more personal bio page.

i prefer them simple too
- About 3 months ago twitter changed their layout. I still see broken backgrounds that have not adjusted themselves to the changes - specifically the first example (Doug Cone @nullvariable) has some text that should display in the empty space between the top twitter menu and the main content block - twitter shortened the top menu area and the blank area is now about 10 pixels above where it used to be, effectively hiding the text which should have been there behind the now slightly higher main content block.)
- It is unprofessional to put the onus of display on the user. With netbooks and smaller internet appliances screen sizes are stabalizing and returning to smaller sizes. Try looking at twitter on a netbook. Design for whatever size you want, but if you actually want people to see your background without clipping half your name, 1024 is the width to plan on. this gives you about 122px to work with.
For an example of how this plays out, see my twitter background which graphically illustrates these sizes. @5h4wn. Just wanted to see these issues addressed.
If you want tons of free backgrounds, you might want to check out my site TwitterBackground.com. I add more everyday. We also offer custom designed from our graphic artists for $75 until July 15. Then $95 from there on..

Personally, I hate templates and don't like using others designs, ideas. I customize my twitter background to whatever I want at times and I like the fact that I can personally change it when I want.
Isn't it better to use your own ideas, pictures, personal backgrounds that truly represent you?
Check this out and start branding who you want to be.

Thanks anyone for clarification!

Give it a try, it's free and generates a background for your Twitter page!
You can add your photo and site logo also...

Have a creative weekend everyone!
Awesome Content Ben. You Rock!
BTW, I use paint for creating a twitter background in minutes so if you want free one, design one in MS paint. It's cool and handy for everyone.
Thanks a lot!

Here is mine, from a common desk motif: http://twitter.com/ChadRenando
Major issue I find is not allowing for scale across all browser types. Try to hide some elements for wide-screen laptops and standard resolutions.
Have fund!
