We used alot of these tips when we first began making our free backgrounds at TwitterBackground.com. We have done so many now, that we have it down to a science. We'll post a blog with the specific details and problems when making them. Maybe Ben can post a referal to us?

    Thanks,

I love all the customized backgrounds I'm seeing as I explore Twitter. There's only one problem, most times I can't see the full width of the the left hand column on people's customized pages. Is this a common problem, or is it something about the way I have my screen size set? I checked and the left column I'm seeing is 122 characters wide. I'd like to see what people are communicating. Do you have a suggestion?
  • Ben Parr · 6 months ago
Your screen size is too small. A lot of 800px or so screen sizes cannot support Twitter columns. Move to a screen resolution with more pixels, as much as you can go. Not only will you see it, but you'll have more room for multitasking.
  • Steve Gonzalez · 6 months ago
    Great choices
  • Alysia Van Camp · 6 months ago
I'm sure if it will help, but if you hold down the Ctrl key while you use the + or - key, your screen will adjust larger or smaller. I'm new to all of this, but that works for me most of the time with out needing to adjust your settings.

How in the world is there a new list on helpful twitter background resources without TwitterBackgrounds.com? You list 5 or 6 sites that do a "poor mans version" of what they do. Why leave out the largest authority in this niche?
  • Jenna · 3 months ago
I don't know about all of them but the background I got from there is too small. It looks great on my netbook but tiles on my desktop's wider screen. I love it but I'm changing it as soon as I find another one I like.
  • burdr · 6 months ago
I'm a huge fan of keeping it simple. Sometimes the backgrounds take away from the content, which in my opinion is the most important thing on the page!

    Just check out my background.

I did design my own background for twitter, but i keep getting errors on upload:

"There was a problem with your picture. Was it an animated gif? We don't support those!"

My background is not animated gif. In fact, i tried both gif and jpg and both brought on the same error message.

The examples above show much of space to the left than what I see. Why are they in control of their left space and I am not? From my view, I usually see my profile page all fitting on the left hand side, meanwhile all others are covered by the center twitter area.... why is that? what should my graphic settings be?
  • Joseph Ting · 6 months ago
This background doesn't work on various screen resolution.
But nowadays, most of the user who are using LCD + wide screen resolution (16:9) will be able to view it properly.
For 4:3 user like me, it's hard to view it properly.
Unless I decided to look at it by viewing the background image which this function is available in Mozilla Firefox.

Great info on how to create a twitter background. It's important to stylize your background because it shows who you are aside from the 140 character updates you make. And if you are too lazy to make your own well there are a lot of sources to just grab one for free.
  • Eric Laffoon · 6 months ago
I had to try this. Very cool, however some linked examples were clipped in my browser from being too wide on the left side. I just took a screenshot of my browser window and used it as a background reference layer. I also used gradients to feather the image past 1700x1000 with a 1900x1400 image. This means it will not tile on a 24 inch screen but fills most browsers with a photo realistic image and slides in under 800K at about 775K.

Hi! I just have to disagree with the fact of inserting info on the left of the screen, in a kind of a bar. It sure looks cute, but seems that everything is optimized for a 1280px width, and a static content placement. The backgrounds on Twitter are not static, not everyone uses the same screen resolution and with the cloud computing boom, because of the exploding use of netbooks, we need to have in mind that there are A LOT of pages being seen in a 1024px with, resulting in a crappy background for your twitter. Shouldn't we think of making a background that works PERFECT independently of the used resolution, browser or Operative System?
  • pix · 2 months ago
I agree, I don't understand why everyone is designing twitter background to work for 1280px width and above. That's excluding at least 40% of computer users.

PROFILErehab has good Twitter backgrounds that work in screen resolutions of 1024x768 to 1920x1200. http://profilerehab.com/twitter_home

Thanks for the feedback on my screen display problem. I'll just have to deal until I can get a bigger screen: [ctrl] [-] only changed the text size to smaller and the background stayed the same; I don't think I can use a different screen resolution without making the text too small either - over age 40 you really do start to care about text size and definition!

A new, bigger, monitor goes on my wishlist. Now, I just need to make a fortune on my blog and I can have my dream :-)

It is a lot of fun to see all the different Twitter backgrounds and the creativity that some people have.

I customized my Twitter background using PowerPoint. I've written a blog post and recorded 4 short videos showing how I did it http://www.YouTube.com/DigitalBreakthroughs. The technique can also be used to create a custom YouTube channel skin. PowerPoint gave me total flexibility in designing and it's super easy to tweak as needed. I resized the slide, designed the layout, saved as jpg.

I love making background images for twitter, but two things bug me about what I see other "authorities" doing.
    - About 3 months ago twitter changed their layout. I still see broken backgrounds that have not adjusted themselves to the changes - specifically the first example (Doug Cone @nullvariable) has some text that should display in the empty space between the top twitter menu and the main content block - twitter shortened the top menu area and the blank area is now about 10 pixels above where it used to be, effectively hiding the text which should have been there behind the now slightly higher main content block.)
    - It is unprofessional to put the onus of display on the user. With netbooks and smaller internet appliances screen sizes are stabalizing and returning to smaller sizes. Try looking at twitter on a netbook. Design for whatever size you want, but if you actually want people to see your background without clipping half your name, 1024 is the width to plan on. this gives you about 122px to work with.
For an example of how this plays out, see my twitter background which graphically illustrates these sizes. @5h4wn. Just wanted to see these issues addressed.

    Hello All,

Personally, I hate templates and don't like using others designs, ideas. I customize my twitter background to whatever I want at times and I like the fact that I can personally change it when I want.

Isn't it better to use your own ideas, pictures, personal backgrounds that truly represent you?

Thanks All, but NO ONE in any of these links on creating your own Twitter backgrounds discusses the clickable components & links on the sides of the background. Like buttons to link to FaceBook, LinkedIn, a website, a blog, etc. If what is being uploaded is a static PowerPoint picture, then how do all these become clickable and linkable? Am I missing something here?
    Thanks anyone for clarification!

  • david tra · 4 months ago
Of course, take screen resolution into account, but also think about whether you are using a widescreen display and if you anticipate others to do the same. Another thing is to pay attention to detail when using a stretegically placed stripe (ex. @mashable @danschawbel), because it will appear differently depending on what browser you use. You can't even read @danschawbel's contact info when using Internet Explorer.

Be interesting to do a graph on commonality of metaphores (desk, face pic, design motif, character, contact details, etc). For someone else who has time, though. ;)

Here is mine, from a common desk motif: http://twitter.com/ChadRenando

Major issue I find is not allowing for scale across all browser types. Try to hide some elements for wide-screen laptops and standard resolutions.

  • William McNeill · 2 months ago
Just tried MyTweetSpace, but am not impressed. You can enter contact information, but it doesn't have intelligent line breaks so the text is staggered. The picture resizing is bad too, it squishes my bio photo. The selection of professional backgrounds is paltry, either you pick a blue bar or a black bar. Going to try one of the other options now....
