Mashable - The Social Media Guide: HOW TO: Build Community on Twitter

  • Valeria | TimelessLessons · 1 year ago
This article couldn’t have come at a better time for me. As someone who is just learning about micro-blogging (I know, I’m behind the curve) these are some nice tips I can reference.

I can’t say if it will become a staple of my existing blog, but it’s worth a try!

Great list Sarah, I'd also say DO get your mobile device integrated with Twitter. It makes interaction a lot quicker and engaging when you're not at a computer
  • Barbara · 1 year ago
Love it: build community & not just a follow/followers list. Excellent resource of practical advice & tools!
  • CharityHisle · 1 year ago
GREAT post Sarah! I look forward to sharing it with my customers.
  • Susan Hillyer · 7 months ago
Hi Charity - I'm slowly working my way into Twitter. I too thought this was an excellant post on the twitter community. I reading comments I was curious what type of biz you are in that you'd share this with customers. Susan
  • @CharityHisle · 7 months ago
Susan, Thank you for your inquiry! I'd love to explain. Twitter me at @CharityHisle or email me at Charity@2witterbug.com and we can talk!

Great information and very timely. As a new Twitter user, I find there seems to be a lot of do's and don'ts out there, some "official", some unspoken.

I found this great post about some of the don'ts, which I thought was excellent for a newbie like me.

Seems we have a lot to know! :)

Thanks for this! I have yet to jump on the Twitter bandwagon. Now that I've seen some of the top Tweeps, I will just have to.

Great Post, thank you for sharing your know how

Just wanted to add to what others have said - very useful post. Some common sense tips that anyone can do that will be very helpful.

Wow TwitDir totally crashed due to too many connections.

Before choosing a user ID check out http://www.usernamecheck.com

It looks at number of services to see if a user name is available across multiple platforms. Beyond Twitter, it's important to have consistency with your online identity.

Great post, goes right to the training that I am going to provide for a new training class in San Antonio. Again thanks for the article.

Great article and great concepts worth learning and re-learning.
    Thanks for sharing Sarah!

Friend! Great post! Very helpful for a newbie like me. And thanks for calling me a "virtual voyeur", lol! I promise to get better. :)
  • Barbara Rozgonyi · 1 year ago
Sarah, you are THE person to write this article! It's amazing to see how much you've accomplished in only a few months.
Here's one more suggestion: set up a Google Alert for your twitter ID. You'll be able to track anytime it's mentioned online.
    @wiredprworks on twitter.com
  • Stuart Foster · 1 year ago
Just be yourself. Try not to spam. Self promote lightly and get involved in the conversation. Also...get a super cool background if you can...or if you can't try and MS Paint one like I am doing :)

    @stuartcfoster
  • Charnita Fance · 1 year ago
I use Twittermail.com to get alerts every time my username is mentioned on Twitter...... better than Google Alerts for that.
  • Alyssa (@agardina) · 1 year ago
Also do: make sure you have a bio! If you're following a lot of people right off the bat and don't have a photo or bio, you look even more like a spammer. Make sure people know who you are in those few words when they visit your profile.

I'm on Twitter @agardina and I also maintain a Twitter account for a museum.
  • @dcilea · 1 year ago
Great timing on this. I was explaining Twitter to a friend earlier this morning and sent him the link. It offers an excellent primer for those getting started as well as tools/techniques to optimize Twitter.

As you mention, the key to Twitter is identifying your persona or "twersona" and then align your updates and following/ers accordingly.
  • Anna · 1 year ago
Thanks for the list! It is important to interact and know who your followers are. Also, sharing great information you find is one of the best uses of Twitter for me.
  • Bonnie Sayers · 1 year ago
great article. I just use twitter directly and never tried the other options. I am going to check out the username check also. I have been autismfamily for eight years online, starting with ebay. I don't like getting DM after I follow someone with their website info since I just checked it out and I hate those that just post links or talking but no conversations with others.

    twitter id is autismfamily

Definitely a timely HOW TO for me, too — thanks for the tips on the Tweets, Sarah!
  • Tim · 1 year ago
Very good, informative post about the use of twitter and the actual "how". I really like the etiquette section and believe that more people should learn more about this aspect of Twitter.
  • NikNik · 1 year ago
Very nice breakdown on how to use Twitter. Superb etiquette tips. I recently started welcoming my new followers with a video. Check it out and let me know what you think: http://budurl.com/niknik
  • Steve Radick · 1 year ago
Very solid post Sarah - I'm passing this along to my colleagues who are asking me how they too can get started using Twitter (it's a lot easier to just point them to the pros than to try and explain it myself!). Plus, you might get some new friends out of it too!
  • Payperbiz · 1 year ago
Thank you for all the information you shared here about Twitter. I just signed up to the said social networking site and I have zero knowledge about it. I thought it was only similar to Facebook then I found out it's totally different.

Sherman Hospital of Elgin, IL is also using twitter, tweeting messages about the new hospital, health news, community news and events, and other fun facts about health care and the community. Its like a regional HealthCare magazine. To follow, just search "Sherman Health"
  • GAILB · 1 year ago
Thanks, Sarah, for the great write up. You accurately explained the importance of building up your name base. Ferris Homes, based in Northbrook, IL, is using Twitter very effectively for its Grand Bend at Green Bay condominiums in Evanston, IL. They were able to search for names in relation to nearby universities and employers to promote special events, new model preview, appointment scheduling, and new lease opportunities. I encourage you to search "Ferris Homes" and see how it's grown in a just very short time.
  • PamPhil · 1 year ago
This is interesting...Local Chicagoland communities of Pulte Homes are finding more responses to their informational tweets than for promotional tweets. Content appears to play a key role in building a Twitter community and in keeping connected to Pulte Homes. To see, search for Pulte Homes or Pulte Chicagoland.
  • @MeritageHomes · 1 year ago
Great article! Real Estate is definitely seeing a pick up in adoption of Twitter. The direct interaction with less of a faceless organization website is makes for less forced and more informational information exchange.

Great post, Sarah. I shared this with a client of mine we're trying to encourage to engage more effectively with audiences on Twitter.

That's a great overview on Twitter. It's pretty interesting to see the growing number of how-to blog posts on Twitter. I take it as a sign it's starting to enter the mainstream. All in all reasonable, but one thing put me off a bit:

"Do… Find out who some of the big players are"

I don't care for big players, nobody should. It seems to be hardwired in our culture to "respect" big players. Most of this being big is manipulation.

So at least I won't follow this particular advice!

    Do... Remember "small is beautiful"

Sarah, great information on using Twitter! I used this article as a reference on how community banks can use Twitter. The post is located at: http://blog.communitybankconsulting.com/2009/03... Thanks for the great work and information!

Except for the first sentence, this article is an excellent orientation for beginners. I linked to it from my site, "Web 2.0 Basics for PR" (www.web2basics4pr.com).
That first sentence -- "Your Twitter community is your life line [sic]" -- you're kidding, right?

Great post and thanks! I'm already on Twitter and vouche for all you say here. However, I think it will take creative minds to begin to craft Twitter interactions into networks that rebuild a broken nation. It can be done and as a change agent in learning and assessment at the higher education level - I'd love to see more of it start right here. Am I dreaming:-) ?

My mom will be happy on Mother's Day. After a 40 year nightmare addiction to heroin, I am clean and doing something constructive; I write for the Detroit Examiner, and also trying to get the book I wrote, Crash Test Addict published.
  • Omar Zaibak · 6 months ago
Good article Sarah. I wrote about that subject on my blog as well. I think the key to list building is to do it yourself! using an automated program is a big mistake in my opinion, sacrificing long-term benefits and viability for short-term gain, what do you think?

I also found your links to search Twitter useful, thanks.

    Regards,
    Omar

    A Very Great Read!!!!!!
  • Allan Cockerill · 5 months ago
Great information, and enjoyable to read, thanks!

I've been on Twitter for some time, and hear what you say about using your real name.

As I have a rather long name, I use @Ozegold on Twitter and a number of other sites, with my real name, so that people can check me out!

Using real identity is important, otherwise it places contacts on social sites at a disadvantage!.

    Cheers!
