Mashable - The Social Media Guide: HOW TO: Back Up Your Tweets

  • Mike_hts · 5 months ago
No real argument on a need to do backup. Three key questions:1) How do you confirm that your data is actually backed up in a format that could be restored; 2) What is the process for restoring your data if disaster strikes and 3) How do you test the data restoration process in advance to make sure it works?

Lifestream's web site doesn't provide much clarity. With data backup the assurance of "just trust us" doesn't quite work.
  • authorityseo · 5 months ago
this seems a critical question as it doesn't do anybody any good to have a backup of their Tweets if you don't know the process to restore them
  • Mike_hts · 5 months ago
Agreed. A good analogy: carrying a spare tire in your car only to find that when you really need to use it you realize that the spare tire is also flat.

A service I need. But they left out some crucial information.
  • Daniel Brusilovsky · 5 months ago
If they did a free version with limited features, that'd be awesome.
  • Athene · 5 months ago
    Agreed.

You can get the Twitter part free at http://backupmytweets.com/.

This is a really cool app. I don't know if I would pay for it though. You have to be way more active online to think that its worthwhile paying for such a service. But its like an insurance policy. Not really useful till you actually are in an accident. Maybe a couple of more years of social media would get me there.

Is there any service that allows you to search through your previous tweets?
  • Joe · 5 months ago
you can if you use http://search.twitter.com and then add from:yourtwittername and what you are searching for e.g. "from:Ajit prize" (without the apostrophs).. this also works for any other user that appears on the search
  • alung · 5 months ago
Just you cannot search for twits older than 14 days. That was previously possible, and now this is a service that is lacking.

Great hint to those who want to feel secure about their data. Thanks Ben.

Does it get all the Tweets, or only the last 3200? Little known Twitter thingie - only your last 3200 Tweets are public - the rest are archived (I assume).
  • technologystolen · 5 months ago
Sure hope this will be helpful Ben. Just wait untill the hackers found this out.

Backing up social media is extremely important however I'm not sure I can afford to pay a monthly fee for this type of service. I'm sure there is a "cheaper" way to save social media connections.

You can also check out thesocialarchive.com for twitter archives. just another resource i thought I would mention.

What if "Lifestream Backup" loses my data? (hackers, downtime, and errors happen all the time!)

The best thing would be, if "Lifestream Backup" can give me an offline copy of all the data it has backed-up.
  • Himanshu · 5 months ago
I am sorry, I just realized that they do allow you to download your data and keep an offline copy :)
  • TrafficBlogger · 5 months ago
I can't imagine that anyone reads past the first page or two of someones tweets very often. Facebook, Gmail, and Youtube backups would be nice though.
  • Filipe · 5 months ago
    Do i have to pay?
Hahahaha i prefer to write all my tweets again!
  • cliftonflack · 5 months ago
www.TweetTranslate.com has a cool feature that stores all your translated tweets and lets you re-tweet in realtime
  • Jonas Lejon · 5 months ago
Hey! http://www.tweetbackup.com is free and http://www.blogbackupr.com is also a free service!
  • Mirko · 5 months ago
I would be very careful about using Lifestream if you want ANY kind of assurance. Just take a look at their Terms of Service and you won't sleep any better. You pay for the service yet there's the following term: "Company, in its sole discretion, has the right to suspend or terminate your account and refuse any and all current or future use of the Service, or any other Company service, FOR ANY REASON AT ANY TIME."

I think my data is safer with Flickr or Wordpress. Get real, why would anyone pay you and get NO assurance whatsoever from it.

Pfft, this is rubbish. I wrote a program to back up your Tweets months ago, as well as a program to search your Tweets or the Tweets of any user who you are able to see the feed of, and I let it out for FREE.
  • fixator · 5 months ago
    Where is this program then?

I use DropBox (http://getdropbox.com) to backup my files because it lets me keep a copy on my laptop and on their servers. I use http://tweetake.com/ once a month to grab all my tweets and save them off to a DropBox folder so they'll be backed up. All my Flickr photos are in my DropBox folders before they even get uploaded to Flickr, so I have a backup of everything I need except for Facebook.

Great! I will definitely try this out. I was erroneously suspended from Twitter recently and it took 11 days to get it sorted out. In the mean time, I was lost without my Twitter list.
  • vsr · 5 months ago
http://tweetbook.in is another tool to backup tweets, in pdf and xml format.
