What are some of the other sports leagues doing in this area? Both professional and semi-pro. Is there one team at the front of the line?

Just wanted to mention that @officialrockets is doing a great job on twitter. From photo hunts to random giveaways and keeping us informed on what's happening with the Houston Rockets.

    Great article Gail,
I actually wrote about this subject last week in the context of what Australian teams aren't doing. We started to map out a basic strategy for the Australian Womens Basketball League that is along the lines of what you've noted here - http://bit.ly/NcrWr

    cheers Mark

Just about every team is at least doing something these days. Other uses of social media for teams include extending the reach of sponsorships to add value/generate additional revenue or utilizing this stuff to offer exclusive ticket promotions (Minnesota Timberwolves have done this on Twitter). Social media isn't just another channel, but certain platforms/tools do give teams unique activation opportunities. Overall, social media brings fans closer to the teams they love, and this is a good thing.

I understand to some extent why teams have been slow to jump in--this is a big deal, and most of them know it and don't want to mess up. But I don't understand how they could fail to see the value in something that allows you to instantly reach thousands of fans and engage them. Even if you don't know how to exactly measure ROI, social media still has more accurate analytics than some other forms of media such as newspapers or TV.

Really can't believe you missed out @Lakers, @JeanieBuss and @kaj33. These 3 are a small part of the @Lakers social media at every Lakers game. Their combined followers? Close to 500k.

Selling last minute tickets would be a great advantage to using social media or generate interest in advance for events.

Great post, Gail! Integrating social media into their marketing efforts will certainly help teams connect with their fans, build stronger fan communities and sell more tickets. What’s more, social media can contribute to those teams’ bottom lines by opening up new streams of revenue like banner and video advertising, online sponsorships, subscriptions for premium content, live events and more. And the opportunity to leverage the broad power of new media is not just available to the "major" sports teams. That's the beauty of it.

Good to see that some of what is being shared this way is more than statistics and game information. It adds more for those who don't simply bet on the games.

I liked your article, Gail. I work with female college coaches and know that these social media tools can help them create more excitement about their team as well as develop stronger relationships in the community. You had some great ideas that would apply to them...thanks.
