Mashable - The Social Media Guide: Homestie: Sell Your Empty Rooms as Storage Space

  • Kaila S | Vertical Measures · 9 months ago
Interesting site, thanks for sharing. I love finding new and interesting sites that I might use one day....too bad my list of those sites is ever growing and when I need to utilize them I have already forgotten what site it was that would help, lol.

    That is an awesome idea....

I have to admit that I am fairly skeptical about this service working out on a large scale, but I do imagine that it will work the best (be the most successful) if people have parking space in high demand areas that the can sell.

I have to say that I am rather skeptical about this service succeeding on a large scale. I imagine most of their success will come through the sale of parking spaces in high demand areas.

How do you keep people from stealing your stuff? If for instance you borrow their bedroom to store your stuff, what keeps them from going thru it, or perhaps stealing it?

On the other side of the issue: You could have a drug dealer deposit his 'inventory' in your house to keep it out of the eyes of police, but if something happened, then you would be liable for the 'inventory.'

This is a bad idea. I wouldn't participate.

The genius idea would be tying this in with an extermination service to rid your house of other people's bugs.

When i found some space and contact home owner, how do you prevent us to go around you?

The problem here is not only the trust issue, but what happens if people don't pay? Do you get to pawn their stuff? Is it covered by your homeowner's and renter's insurance? What happens if your water heater breaks and ruins their stuff? What happens if your stuff is damaged at their place? Maybe we should consider having a garage sale and downsizing rather than park our stash all over the place.

What an interesting idea and great timing during the recession... I wonder if it will take off.
    Try the best homepage

    Hey Adam,

Mashable was once a really cool site, but as more and more writers have joined, it's simply not that appealing anymore. The main reason for this is that many people have been hired who seem not to have a clue what they are writing about. One example ... if you would be passionate about new Internet companies and services you wouldn't write "Homstie is a really smart idea ...". You wanna know why? Because there already has been such a site in the US about 2 years ago and there is another online since a couple of years in Germany. In case they have paid you to call their service nevermind. But if not, then please stop praising an idea, which is just a 100% copycat.

I proposed a similar idea to re-invent the automobile industry last year. (Commercial parking lots are full of cars that can be thought of as mobile lockers with predictable volume and path characteristics for optimized small storage and delivery.) It makes a lot of sense.

This is a cool idea - will be really interesting to see how this takes off. The issue of trust is very interesting and potentially a huge obstacle to overcome. I work for Big Yellow Self Storage http://www.bigyellow.co.uk/ based in the UK and one of the reasons people turn to storage facilities like ours is the fact that they know it's secure, easy to use and inexpensive. I suppose a huge issue is whether people are willing to risk any of these things in the name of a freebie. Will be watching this space to see how this develops!

Hmmm.... following the link to homestie.com just takes you to a blank page. Google homesite, and you won't even see if on the front page (Google asks, "Did you mean homesite). Even doing a search for "site:homestie.com" reveals that Google doesn't know about the site. The only listings that mention it are related to Mashable.... I reckon they'll need to do a bit of SEO to get widespread adoption on this one!

@Tom Kerswill - It does come up if you search the correct spelling of their name, Homstie not Homestie

I've recently stored some furniture at http://www.kangarooselfstorage.co.uk (cool company with great people). I was offered space at a friends house, but I just knew it would lead to problems - I don't know how long I'll need to store for, getting my stuff up their stairs was just not going to be fun etc.
