Mashable - The Social Media Guide: Google Wave: A Complete Guide

  • Gregg DesElms · 6 months ago
As I was reading this article, I choked on: "In most instances, you can see what someone else is typing, character-by-character."

I don't let even my wife watch over my shoulder whenever I work at the computer. She can, when invited, stand over my shoulder while I show her something... but watching over my shoulder during normal work? Not a chance. Not her. Not anyone. And here's why:

The ultimate impact and meaning to the reader of anything written would be inordinately influenced by said reader being a witness to its creation. If one is a thoughtful writer who doesn't just blurt out every wayward thought that flits through one's brain, then one's going to pause to think while one types, and back-up and delete and re-type, and whatever else behind-the-scenes activity goes into what ends-up being the finished written product. If the reader were able to witness what the writer mere thought about writing, and then did but then thought better of and changed it to something else, then the bell of what the reader saw that was subsequently removed cannot be un-rung; and the reader's interpretation of the final result will be indelibly affected by it.

Though I be in my fifties, I embrace new technologies like a kid. But this one is already rubbing me the wrong way a little... and for me, that's unusual. Whatever else Google Wave might be, or whatever other good of which it might be capable, the ability of it participants to see one another's keystrokes is a monumentally bad (of biblical proportions, in my opinion) idea...

...and so will ultimately likely be a huge deal-breaker for me.

    Huge.

Being watched as we type is so much like the earliest days of online communication. Some of us can remember those services that let us see each keystroke of the person we were communicating with as they typed, backed up, corrected. But in most cases that I can recall it was one-on-one. If there was bit of intimacy, fine. It was deliberate and we knew to whom we were exposing our creative process. This, though, would be just too visible. I'm recalling an episode of "Curb Your Enthusiasm" in which the word "aunt" is misspelled in an obituary. If you know Larry David, you can imagine what the misspelling was, and you can imagine how he belabored it for comic value.

In any event, imagine making a similar typing error while visible to potentially thousands of readers. Was is a mis-type or was it something you really meant but thought better of upon seeing it on the screen? I wouldn't want to have to defend myself against deliberate mis-readings of my transient errors.

Prediction: The "watch-me-type" feature will either disappear or become optional.
  • brucewagner · 6 months ago
The character-by-character, "watch me type", feature IS ALREADY OPTIONAL....

In the demo they show how you can check the box called Draft Mode to turn that off...
  • nspur · 5 months ago
Yeah, I don't know why they make it seem otherwise in the article. Also, I think people might adapt to something like this, and give a bit more thought delay before typing. Not to scare, but it could almost be like a new medium for expression if you could understand someone's thought process as well as their statements.

Where in heaven's name to real people find time for all this socializing? Yeesh, doesn't anybody have work to do?
  • Some random guy · 6 months ago
This isn't just about socializing. You can collaborate on documents, have everyone at a meeting take notes on the same page simultaneously (and ask questions to the group without speaking out loud), or (in the future) use this as a calendaring solution. There's a lot more to this than IM and Twitter.

I don't think so. If they're talking about "Twave" it looks like they want to be able to support Twitter not stomp it out.
  • vidarh · 6 months ago
Though if Wave takes off, the protocol, and the fact it's federated and based on XMPP means that it'd be trivial to make a twitter like Wave gadget that doesn't need Twitter, and gets all kinds of benefits (such as no single point of failure)

Fascinating. I hope the ACL is more robust than Google Sites. I use DokuWiki now, and the admin for ACL is marvelously easy and comprehensive. You can set up groups and assign users and control access all the way down to single pages or different name spaces. If Google Wave does not provide minute access controls it will still be badly crippled (as Google Sites is today, for this one reason alone)

Google Wave is gonna be the next BIG thing. I have no doubt that it will revolution email and social networking, combining everything into one seamless app. No longer will you have to open different programs to do different things. Everything in one place. Also, with the "Cloud" becoming used more and more, I think we'll find smaller, more powerful Netbooks taking off, leaving the desktops and laptops behind...

    Hi
I am very inspired of google wave. It's a very good way and i really love it.
Also it's great, because it is opensource.
    Thanks to the great article.
But i have 2 thoughts, because i love pgp and openssl. Is there a way to make it secure? Think of don't want to share sensible information with other people or systems. Think about the live spellchecker integrated and so on.
maybe you are interested in a lil discussion on twitter? would be great. -> openaddisaden @twitter or direct twittersearch #dsc4781

I've had enough trouble trying to make the more luddite element of my circle (friends, family) understand Gmail, now this? It'll take off - for sure - among the clued in, like myself.

It's going to take an awful lot to get the luddite masses to shed email and "catch the wave", though.

Does anyone know if Google are going to allow 3rd part Robot developers to charge for their Wave Robots?

Is the Wave App Store going to be the next big thing for application developers?

We were tossing ideas around at BarCampNYC4 on the weekend and came up with a ton of valuable robotos in a short brainstorming session but without a way for the third party developers to monetise those apps.......

    What do you think?

    Cheers,

This is an exciting avenue for Google. If we can bring all of the great separate apps together into one platform, then we are truly connected. Google has done a tremendous job keeping each individual useful and pure. It was only a matter of time before they pulled all of this together. Simon Ford saw this coming. Now here is the evidence.
  • Stephen Baugh · 6 months ago

This is a very smart effort by Google to spy on people and whatever they do in their lives.

Google is not the only solution to the world's problems. It is just a spy.

There are many other smarter applications you can rely on than Google (now waves).
  • Reality · 6 months ago
A very smart way to spy people what they do in their lives. Google is nothing more than like a person who acts very softly and compassionately towards you, so that you start to rely on it. Then stabs a knife in your back when it wants.

Google is not the only solution to the world's problems. There are also other great applications than Google, and now Waves.
  • Jerrem · 6 months ago

I can't wait for this to go public, and I sure hope they give one of the 100,000 accounts to me. This is something only a company like Google could pull off. Considering Googles wherewehtel and repuration, wave will have tremendous impact. Its about time they merged email with IM. It will stick because most people love being connected and they are as you see text messaging ballooning. The only issue is that Google wave is very server intensive bringing processing back to the server and storing messages, so will this be a bottleneck that hurts it? The key is finding a niche, all the big boys and google will have the Wave customer account, forget about competing as a Free wave server.
